PLPE mailing list is for scholars interested in issues around Policy, Law, and Political Economy (PLPE). It is intended to help foster a scholarly community around these issues. At this point, the main purpose of the list is to pass along academic and policy related information. The list will include a weekly list of announcements relevant to the policy community, e.g., conferences, CFPs, and job announcements. A separate weekly message will provide a list of new working papers or publications by list members. A second purpose of the list will be to identify issues that generate consensus within PLPE and our scholarly community. Call for Papers: THE GOOD LIFE IN A TECHNOLOGICAL AGE Multidisciplinary Workshop at the University of Twente, The Netherlands June 12-14, 2008 Organized by Philip Brey (chair), Adam Briggle, Ed Spence, Johnny Soraker Department of Philosophy, University of Twente and 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology, the Netherlands. SUBMISSION OF EXTENDED ABSTRACTS: Authors should submit an electronic version of an extended abstract (1000-1500 words). The abstract should be in doc, rtf or pdf format and be submitted by email to glita(a)gw.utwente.nl before March 10, 2008. WORKSHOP FORMAT: Each participant will give a short presentation followed by discussion. For invited papers a commentator will be assigned. There will be a plenary discussion at the end of the workshop. PUBLICATION: We are currently considering reputable publishers for a book consisting of the best papers from the workshop. Full papers for inclusion in the book should be submitted before November 1, and will be peer-reviewed. Longitudinal qualitative analysis of CMC

Hello everybody, I am interested in doing longitudinal qualitative analysis of asynchronous online communities in order to analyse the development of the online community over time (e.g. looking at how people develop a sense of community, how communication and interaction patterns change over time, how people take on or abandon certain roles within the community etc.). However, I am having a hard time finding methodological guidance on how to go about it (the longitudinal part). Does anybody have experience with longitudinal qualitative analysis of CMC or can recommend literature that might help me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kind regards, Uli -- Psssst! See the longitudinal study I did with colleagues on an online learning environment (2000, in JCMC). We used as a base much of the literature on group processes, including group development over time. A bit more of a review on that literature is also in a JALN piece from 2006. Michelle Kazmer's work looks specifically at the group ending process -- the 'disengagement' from online groups. Apologies for Cross-posting ++++++++++++++++++++++ 4th International Conference on e-Social Science Manchester, June 18th-20th, 2008 Call for Submissions (further deadline extension - 11th February 2008) The aim of the conference on e-Social Science is to bring together leading international representatives of the social science, e-Infrastructure/cyberinfrastructure and e-Research communities in order to improve mutual awareness, harmonize understanding and instigate coordinated activities to accelerate research, development and deployment of powerful, new research methods and tools for the social sciences and beyond. We invite contributions from members of the social science, e-Infrastructure/cyberinfrastructure and e-Research communities with experience of, or interests in: 1) exploring, developing, and applying new methods, practices, and tools afforded by new infrastructure technologies - such as the Grid and Web 2.0 - in order to further social science research; and 2) studying issues impacting on the wider take-up of e-Research. Submission categories include: full and short papers, posters, demos, workshops, tutorials and panels. Please indicate the category of your submission: full paper, short paper, poster, workshop, panel or demo and include the contact details of the main author on a separate sheet. Demo submissions should include a statement of technical requirements. Authors of papers (full and short) and posters are requested to submit an abstract of approximately 1000-1500 words. Workshop, demo, tutorial and panel organisers are requested to submit a one page outline of the topic, format, likely audience, special requirements. Submissions will be subject to independent review and a final decision will be made by the conference programme committee.
