Academics and practitioners at the 2008 Nonprofit Technology Conference?

Dear AIR Colleagues, I recently registered for the 08NTC, which will be held in New Orleans this March <http://nten.org/ntc>. As you'll see, one of the items is a good mix of academic researchers and nonprofit technology professionals. Coding Analysis Toolkit: Beta Testers Needed

[Please forward this to any relevant list or individual] I am recruiting volunteers to beta test my invention: the Coding Analysis Toolkit (CAT). http://www.qdap.pitt.edu/cat.htm Originally a tool for adjudicating text coding decisions made by multiple coders using ATLAS.ti, thereby making it easy to measure inter-rater reliability *and* coder validity, CAT has grown quickly into a promising new set of web-based tools for anyone who wants to code a lot of digitized text in a quick, efficient, effective, reliable and valid manner. By design, CAT is a mixed method toolkit, facilitating close qualitative analysis of text, accurate measurement of coder errors, and large scale, quantitative content analysis. The adjudication tool is the centerpiece; it helps users refine categories and resolve difficult manual coding problems. The toolkit is designed to do a small (but growing) number of key coding, analyzing, and reporting tasks. For anyone who has ever struggled with the commercial off-the-shelf products, CAT is specially designed, from the ground up, to eliminate all the annoying things that have bugged text analysts for years. Whereas people spend 2-3 days learning the basics of existing qualitative data analysis products, I can train people in the use of CAT in about 5 minutes. I invite you, your team, or your graduate students to sign up for a free beta tester account. http://cat.ucsur.pitt.edu/ While CAT is scheduled to be commercialized later this year, for now, anyone can use it for free. When it does commercialize, it will be very cheap or free for graduate students. Beta testers will be asked to complete a web-based usability survey, however, we anticipate this feedback will result in an even better system. I predict there will be some spiffy dissertations that include megabytes of coded data. The solution: I am trying to lift my wrists up so that only my fingers touch the keyboard. And I will be taking a break at the Social Network conference, this Tuesday thru Sunday. But I am wondering if this is a new phenomenon, or others on this list have experienced it. I do like Thinkpads for reliability and keyboard feel, but I notice that their palm rests are a bit rough. My brief and hasty analogy was done in good fun (from my pov at least) and is far less encyclopedic than you interpret, Conor. My simpler idea had keys as simply turning on a computer and gas as software. The intention was a little leg pulling in the direction of companies that might run into difficulties with anti-trust laws by selling whole packages all together. A bit too simple, I confess, to keep up with your interpretation. Without wishing to make too much of a shaggy dog story, my analogy also intended an "open air" operation in spoof answer to the tool shed analogy. Since nothin raeally encloses the web, so I thought, it seems to me that a motor pool or mebbe airport analogy would come closer. But as you've seen, my starting point is kind of leaky. I seem to have equated the www with the internet, alas. On academic uses of academic listservs

I see this as both a legal and an ethical issue. As regards the ethics: Props for sparking a discussion, but I think the air-l policy statement is dispositive (and good advice for email generally). It reads, in part: ------ ETIQUETTE Keep in mind that anything you send to air-l automatically goes to all subscribers – please keep posts on-topic for the list. Also remember when posting to the list that air-l is a public forum and that your words will be available to everyone subscribed to the list and placed in a public archive. Messages sent via email can easily be reproduced and circulated beyond their originally intended audience, and neither the list manager, the association's officers, nor the server’s host are responsible for consequences arising from list messages being re-distributed. ------ See: http://aoir.org/?q=node/5 Legally: I'm no attorney, but this is really a copyright issue, and as such, I'd be entirely comfortable arguing that copyright is no obstacle to almost any conceivable academic use of an academic listserv, at least not in the US. I know much less about other jurisdictions, but based on my much thinner knowledge of fair dealing, I'd predict a similar outcome, at least in most Commonwealth nations. (Those of you from outside the US: please excuse my jurisdictional Americentrism. If you think your courts would find differently, how so?) In any case, if you use listserv material for academic work in the US, you're almost certainly fine. US Code, Title 17, Section 107, reads, in part: ------ ... the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction ... for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include — (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; (2) the nature of the copyrighted work; (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. ... ------ See: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107 Each of these factors favors a finding of fair use here.
