University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Department of Communication Studies POSITION Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Technology and Cultural Studies, beginning July 1, 2008. We are particularly interested in people with research and teaching interests in some aspect(s) of the study of technology and communication, especially media technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to the department's strengths in critical and cultural theory. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses appropriate to their specialty, conducting research, supervising theses and dissertations, and performing departmental, university and public service. Salary is competitive. QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Media Studies, or related discipline. Candidates should have a significant record of, or the potential for, outstanding teaching, research, and service. GENERAL INFORMATION The Department of Communication Studies has 25 full-time faculty positions with existing areas of emphasis in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, Rhetorical Studies, Performance Studies, Media Studies, and Communication and Cultural Studies. Hi All, Im looking for a good history timeline of the internet. Ive googled and I find the result bad. Most of them end in the nineties and Hobbes only goes to 2004. They also seem very eclectic and too centered on the US. Do any of you know of a good timeline? What Im specifically looking for is examples of companies buying up sites with user generated content, one example would be when google acquired the Deja archive of usenet. Best, Søren Mørk

Call for Panel and Paper Proposals: IEEE International Professional Communication Conference 2008 (IPCC 2008) Conference Theme: Opening the Information Economy Conference Location: Concordia University, Montréal, Canada Conference Dates: July 13-16, 2008 The information economy is based on the collection and the exchange of data and ideas. We all either contribute to or use materials from the information economy in most aspects of our everyday lives. As a result, the information economy exists as an environment in which we are all contributors and consumers. Within this system, effective communication is essential to success, allowing individuals to contribute ideas and information effectively and to make efficient use of the goods and services. Few of us, however, understand all of the nuances of the information economy or the communication factors that affect its operations. This conference seeks to examine or to "open" this economic model by examining the connections between communication practices and the products, practices, and services that constitute the information economy. The objective of such an examination will be to help attendees better understand and participate in the information economy as both contributors and consumers. The conference will take place on the campus of Concordia University in Montréal, Canada and will consist of paper presentations and panel discussions that focus on various communication, design, social, and cultural aspects of the information economy. Reminder: Application deadline 26 September 2007 Oxford Internet Institute - Civil Society Practitioners Programme Invitation to apply The Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) invites applications from the global South to fill two places in its Civil Society Practitioners Programme. This visitor programme is intended for Civil Society Practitioners of distinction or outstanding promise who wish to visit the Institute for a period of six weeks between February and December 2008, to undertake research concerning the social impact of the Internet and related ICTs. Visitors are expected to reside in Oxford during their stay, and to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ASSOCIATION OF INTERNET Researchers October 17 through October 20, Vancouver, BC, Canada LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE is organizing and managing the BOOK EXHIBIT for the upcoming HBES MEETING beginning Wednesday, October 17 through Saturday, October 20 at the Simon Fraser University. One experienced LSS staff person will be on-site throughout to manage the display (Richard Klein). However, the conference will be a substantial one and the book exhibit will be large (over 200 titles in the display). WE SEEK TO HIRE AN INDIVIDUAL TO ASSIST RICHARD KLEIN WITH MANAGING THE BOOK EXHIBIT. This is a PAYING POSITION (or the person can receive part of their payment by selecting books that remain at the end of the conference). The person will assist with the set-up of the display (on Wednesday) as well as with writing up orders during the course of the conference. The job is not difficult, but is fairly intense. We wish to hire someone with business experience. There will be time to go to sessions when you are not working at the book exhibit.
