Those interests would be demonstrated in both the person’s teaching assignments and research/ creative work. We seek to educate students to value the traditions of a free and responsible media that support a democratic society, and to become ethical and productive members of the news media and their communities. We also seek to engage our scholarly communities as well as our constituent industries, whose leaders tell us they look increasingly to the academy for help in coping with this fast- changing news environment. This colleague will teach two courses per semester in the newsgathering and media studies sequences at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and serve on graduate committees. For this position a Ph.D. is preferred and professional experience in journalism with a new media emphasis is highly desired. Candidates holding a master’s degree with extensive professional experience in digital media will be considered. CALL FOR PAPERS A Special Issue on "Cultural Aspects of Interaction Design" The notion of interaction design has become an indispensable aspect of product design and development, especially for those products with embedded information technologies. While traditional industrial design focuses on a product's functionality and its physical features, interaction design focuses on the interactive experience of users. Since products are becoming more pervasively and more tightly interwoven with our daily activities, design calls for a deeper understanding of the diverse perspectives of product use. Culture has been considered to play a critical role for users in their understanding, acceptance, positioning, and use of an artifact. The quality of an interactive experience is produced in a particular cultural context and is determined or evaluated in that context. Yet, when it comes to incorporating cultural factors effectively in design practice, knowledge is insufficient at all levels -- conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and practical. Cultural factors need to be integrated in the design process in order to achieve the high quality of product interaction that enables our experience with a product to be effective and enjoyable. For this special issue of the International Journal of Design, we are seeking papers that present breakthroughs in conceptual, theoretical, methodological and practical research that enhance the formalization of design knowledge with regard to the "cultural aspects of interaction design." In particular, these contributions should focus on representing cultural factors in describable, operable, and usable forms of design knowledge with relevance to interaction design. I yet again ran into frustration trying to find the source (publication, date) for a quotation. Finding the quote is easy. In this case: Gene Fowler, "Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until little drops of blood form on your forehead."* But when was it uttered or written. The many quotation pages on the web seem Never to give sources. (Methinks, many just copy from each other.) They seem to be aimed at giving sound-bytes to speakers, bloggers, etc. Barlett's QUotations was sterling on this in print days. Does it still exist? Any other advice? *A cognitive psych research question: is writing easier with screens and word processing than in the old days of blank pages, pens and typewriters? I've used both www.socialtext.com and Confluence (http://www.atlassian.com) The former offers a free hosted service and is very easy to use. I particularly like the big "edit" button at the top of each page - you can't make it much easier than that. Confluence is a little different from the more typical, open-ended wiki structure. New pages are organised hierarchically, with breadcrumbs assigned automatically. I think this gives users more of a feel for where they are in the wiki, which can be confusing if you are used to more traditional navigation structures. Hope that's useful. That could be good to ensuring that discussions between students about changes, are tied to a particular page, rather than getting lost in other discussions/ emails that they're having. I've recently been to ALT-C - a conference in the UK for Learning Technologists. One of the papers ( http://www.alt.ac.uk/altc2007/timetable/abstract.php?abstract_id=1220 ) looked at how students were using wikis etc. They found that students found the group work aspects very difficult, and the most common way of creating a wiki was for them to divide up the content and create a "page" each. Reference was made in the presentation to a different session, when "Wiki etiquette" was discussed (not sure which session, as i didn't go to it). They made the point, however, that they'd spend a lot more time discussing how much work most students need to help them effectively use a wiki. (The presentation doesn't seem to be linked to from the page. Others that I went to were, so hopefully this one will appear at some point) I know that when I had students creating wikis, they were definitely of the "I'll do that page & you do that page" variety.
