JOB ANNOUNCEMENT TWO ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITIONS DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY The ASU Department of Communication Studies, located at the west campus in Phoenix, plays an integral role in Arizona State University's multi-campus research and teaching mission. One of several ASU departments offering communication degrees, Communication Studies is strongly committed to interdisciplinary scholarship, methodological diversity, a collegial environment, the blending of liberal arts and human services traditions, and a rigorous undergraduate and graduate education. The department benefits from its location on an intimate campus (8,500 students) with excellent library and faculty support services as well as access to the vast resources of the larger ASU system of campuses. The department consists of 10 full-time faculty and is adding these two assistant professor positions to better serve our 300 undergraduate majors and 40 M.A. students. Hi Hugie, Just to back up some of the replies to this - looking at a sample of MySpace profiles, about a third of "members" probably only log on when they join and then give up for whatever reason. Another third probably log on weekly or so and the rest may give up after a while or log on infrequently - so it is difficult to draw conclusions about migration just from the number of active users, even aside from the problem of multiple accounts- which maybe one day soon the majority of users will have. http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/~cm1993/papers/MySpace_d.doc It will be interesting to see if in the future sites that are now very big amongst some sectors of the population (e.g., MySpace, Facebook) are dropped for the new latest thing, or manage to sustain their user base by reinventing themselves or just through sheer weight of numbers. International Internet use statistics

For an interesting Asian comparison, try South Korea's National Internet Development Agency http://isis.nida.or.kr/index_unssl.jsp. The site navigation isn't great and the reports are in slightly eccentric English but it was there I discovered that in 2005 "41.3% of Internet users have visited own's or other's blog (mini homepage), and 30.7% of them have own's blogs. Females use blogs more than male, and the age of 20's use them more than any other ages groups. This includes 57.5% of Koreans in their 20s" (which makes UK and US blog adoption look rather puny. youdecide2007 - citizen journalism project

Hi all, Just thought I'd let the list in on the details of an Australian Research Council-funded citizen journalism project that I'm helping to facilitate from the Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland University of Technology (other partners include SBS, On Line Opinion and the Brisbane Institute). We're offering a citizen-led coverage of the upcoming Australian Federal Election on an electorate-by-electorate (hyperlocal) basis. It would be great experience/CV fodder for student journalists. It might also be something that colleagues are interested in getting involved in directly! In any case, we'll hope you'll monitor the project post-launch in September. The project will produce a range of outcomes, from cutting-edge research to exciting, real-world projects. The first major initiative of the project is youdecide2007. This is a citizen journalism project which will offer a grassroots, electorate-by-electorate coverage of the 2007 Australian Federal Election. Ordinary Australians will have the opportunity to report on the election from their own, local perspective, in a way that takes local issues into account. With this promising to be the closest-fought election contest in some time, youdecide2007 will offer a new lens on our national democracy. The broad perspectives offered by mainstream media outlets will be complemented with a coverage that shows how local issues matter to individuals. At the heart of the initiative is a website and an online community which will host reportage and multimedia content covering a range of key, battleground seats. The site will offer a diverse range of perspectives on the election, and host both news and opinion content that is generated by the voters. The election and a surge of interest in citizen journalism means that youdecide2007 will garner national and international attention. Anchor citizen journalists will be sought for key seats, but news and opinion will be welcome from the widest possible base of contributors. Training and advice will be provided, to help get a broad base of individuals involved in contributing content and the editorial process. As the project progresses, research articles will be published based on this experience, surveying global developments in citizen journalism, contributing to conferences in this area, and working towards community outreach activities including citizen journalism workshops. Most importantly, though, we will be generating expertise which we can use to contribute to sustainable citizen journalism projects in the future.
