In response to queries about internet history: It sure ain't definitive, but here's my Personal History of HCI. It brings together wiki researchers, practitioners, and users. The goal of the symposium is to explore and extend our growing community. It has a rigorously reviewed research paper track as well as plenty of space for practitioner reports, demonstrations, and open discussions. Anyone who is involved in using, researching, or developing wikis is invited to WikiSym 2007! We recognize that the online world is always evolving, and therefore welcome people interested in other online media consistent with the wiki philosophy of being open, organic and participatory. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Our headline speakers this year include many of the thought leaders on wiki. Our keynote speaker will be Jonathan Grudin (Microsoft Research), one of the world's leading researchers on Computer Supported Collaborative Work. Ward Cunningham (AboutUs), inventor of wiki and founding father of our field, will give the closing talk. Peter Thoeny (StructuredWikis), creator of TWiki, will give a half day tutorial on wikis in the workplace.

I've used both www.socialtext.com and Confluence (http://www.atlassian.com) The former offers a free hosted service and is very easy to use. I particularly like the big "edit" button at the top of each page - you can't make it much easier than that. Confluence is a little different from the more typical, open-ended wiki structure. New pages are organised hierarchically, with breadcrumbs assigned automatically. I think this gives users more of a feel for where they are in the wiki, which can be confusing if you are used to more traditional navigation structures. Hope that's useful. I've recently been to ALT-C - a conference in the UK for Learning Technologists. One of the papers ( http://www.alt.ac.uk/altc2007/timetable/abstract.php?abstract_id=1220 ) looked at how students were using wikis etc. They found that students found the group work aspects very difficult, and the most common way of creating a wiki was for them to divide up the content and create a "page" each. Reference was made in the presentation to a different session, when "Wiki etiquette" was discussed (not sure which session, as i didn't go to it). They made the point, however, that they'd spend a lot more time discussing how much work most students need to help them effectively use a wiki. (The presentation doesn't seem to be linked to from the page. Others that I went to were, so hopefully this one will appear at some point) I know that when I had students creating wikis, they were definitely of the "I'll do that page & you do that page" variety. My own preference is for using MediaWiki, which I've done both via a local install and off-site at wikia.com. The main reason that I prefer MediaWiki is that I try to emphasize that wikis are tools that matter in the "real world," and I encourage/require students to apply their wiki skills to the world's largest wiki, Wikipedia - the consistency of platforms gives a form of software literacy that feels more useful than learning a specific set of protocols that only apply to a single class project. Call for Participation Computer-Mediated Social Networking Dunedin, New Zealand 11-13 June 2008 http://www.business.otago.ac.nz/infosci/Conferences/Isn2008/ The International Conference on Computer-Mediated Social Networking (ICCMSN 2008) will explore social networking issues such as formation of online communities and how collaboration and cooperation can be achieved. The topics covered encompass multiple disciplines, including Computer Science, Sociology, Epidemiology, Economics, Marketing, Education, etc. Some of the applications that can benefit from social network structural models include social norm spreading, disease propagation, opinion dynamics, and collective knowledge construction. Hi all, I'm looking for suggestions for wiki software to use with a class. I don't want to have to install anything, and am of course looking for something simple to set up and use.
