Hello, The Pelican Web has a free monthly newsletter which provides a digest of cutting edge research news about critical global issues. The following poster attempts to summarize this work: http://www.pelicanweb.org/monthlyfocus.html Can anyone make any suggestion on how to best announce (free of charge) the availability of this free newsletter via the internet? For instance, any suggestions about good places to post? Are there listservs that allow posting notices about new online resources? Webrings? Needless to say .... spamming is not an option. Genealogy of the term "Netspeak"

Dear AIR (and CMC-SLING), Does anyone know of a good reference on the origin of terms like "Netspeak," "webspeak," or "chatspeak"? I'm not looking for information on when/where/how Netspeak itself came from, or what its definition is, but rather when/where/how the term came into currency. It seems that David Crystal sort of popularized the term/concept "Netspeak" amongst academics and the public in his book Language and the Internet (2001), but I also know that it's documented as being in use several years prior to that (and I unfortunately don't have the book on-hand to check whether he gives a history or not). I'm wondering whether particular online communities or sites began using the term and when that may have happened. Any pointers - whether to articles that discuss the history of such terms, archived websites that include them, or just personal impressions of when they may have started gaining speed - would be greatly appreciated. You can reply on or offlist, depending on whether you think it's an interesting discussion to continue list-wide (I can't really judge how many people will care about such things!). Words in Abstract, 183. Abstract The Internet has become increasing popular as a vehicle to deliver surveys. An essential objective of research is to collect accurate data and there has been little work to insure that Internet survey systems are employing best practices as defined by academic and professional research to collect data. My dissertation reviews the current literature relating to best practices in Internet survey design and best practices in software design and development. I then document the development and deployment of an Open Source and publicly licensed Internet survey system that allows researchers to easily create, deploy, and analyze the results of Internet surveys. The resultant Internet survey design product, the Balch Internet Research and Analysis Tool (http://birat.net) is a full-featured Internet survey system which addresses best Internet research practices as defined by academic and professional research. The system was designed and coded by the author and is considered by him to be both innovative and unique to the field. I'm currently researching downloaded music, and my ethics committee was very concerned about my uncovering unlawful activity. While they did not see that I would be obliged to offer the information to authorities, they did say that I would be obliged to report the activity if asked by said authorities. This seems to be the case for most research here - notifiable offenses such as child abuse excepted - you have to warn participants that if they tell you about, or let you observe illegal activities then you would be obliged to report that to law enforcement if specifically questioned. Notifiable offences you have to report.
