Meta lurking

I wonder if one is lurking in THIS discussion... Am I a meta-lurker? There is also the oft-used admonition "Lurk more!" when someone is perceived to (a) be new and (b) have committed a perceived mistake that could have been prevented if he or she had simply paid more attention to norms, expectations, and history I wonder if a discussion among his group will really have any effect of the millions of lists in which lurkers are referred to by that name. For that reason, Im trying to find numbers about internet growth and computer usage since 1976. Currently I have the number of internet users worldwide and the number of hosts, and some incomplete information about computer usage. But Im still trying to find some numbers related to academics. Lurkers Wanted - Revisited

I truly appreciate all the people who volunteered for this call. However the posibility of an unbiased study has been compromised by the continuing discussion on this list. IMHO, a collection of anecdotal observations could have merit as a thought piece in the general sense of an ethnography but it would not have the the properties which would suggest general processes. I.e. the subjects are also observers and informed by the discussion. This is not a negative to me because the discussion has interrogated the use of jargon in scholarly discourse. Again I thank you for the offer. As scholars I know you understand my logic. If you are a volunteer and read this please write me off list and let me know you read this. Zotero and sharing saved web pages & notes

Yes, as far as I can tell. There is a discussion about this on the Zotero forum ( http://www.zotero.org/documentation/ ). It seems that they are working to make create complete online access, but haven't gotten there yet. Since I have a lot of documents and references saved in Zotero, I just loaded a portable Firefox app right onto my USB and also copied the Zotero library onto my USB as well (you can find more explicit instructions on the forum). So when I go to a new computer, I plug in the USB and open Firefox from it. This way I am always using the same Firefox and Zotero interface with same bookmarks, etc. and all my saved documents are with me. I agree: "lurk" has a negative ring, and not without reason: when the expression came into being, it was inconceivable that someone would sit on a BBS and do nothing but lurk in the message section. Now, however, people spend days at a time online doing nothing but lurk in the bandwidth. Perhaps we should change the word, to reflect the changing time: I'm in favor of "wallflower." I like the concept of grazing, as well - as I said in my earlier post, I'm too used to the word "lurk" in its non-Internet usage to a) consider myself to be doing that, when I am not posting to lists, and b) consider others whose existence I am basically unaware of to be doing that. I am just curious: for those who consider "lurking" to be problematic or undesirable - is it problematic for the lurkers (who, as John Veitch point out, may be missing a learning opportunity), or for the lurkees - the people on the lists who do participate regularly? And if the latter, why? I haven't done much - well, any - reading in this area, so I don't know what the arguments could be, though I can speculate. Indeed, for some types of lists, I can see lack of participation becoming a problem. My department's graduate student list, during the seven years I've been there, has gone from a place where we used to discuss intellectual topics relevant to our field as well as departmental policies and politics, to a place where people announce parties and free food opportunities. Which are important, too, but the silence on other topics is deafening to the few of us who are still around from the "old days." It's definitely a symptom of a bigger change in the community. But in academic or professional lists where there remain a number of active participants on a variety of topics, the lurker load doesn't seem to be problematic (unless it's a question of maintenance or something). Unless it just bothers people who don't know who is reading their posts, or there is a concern that the list may stagnate. This thread was introduced because someone didn't think lurking should be considered a bad thing, and thus should have a label with less negative connotations, but in the discussion some fairly strong normative judgments about lurkers and lurking have emerged which seem to indicate that having a word with negative connotations is warranted.
