Possible investigations of the digital divide may focus on international, national, local, sector, communal, and individual level. Both empirical and theoretical papers are invited. Potential contributions related to the digital divide may include, but are not limited to the following: * Conceptualization and theory of digital divide, digital spectrum and eInclusion * Socio-demographic factors- gender, age, education, income, ethnic diversity, race diversity, language diversity, religiosity * Social and governmental support - for example the use of supportive initiatives, policy and applications to bridge the gap, or how society and community impact eInclusion * Access and technology - infrastructure factors * Affordability * Use - skills, frequency and time, locus, autonomy of use, what do users do online and for what purpose * Accessibility focusing mainly in populations with special needs * Measurements index - e-readiness, DiDix and more * Comparative analysis of policy * Comparative cross-country or cross-region research * Country or region specific case studies Important Dates: Abstracts: Optional June 15, 2007: Authors submit full papers to the Peer Review System August 15, 2007: Acceptance/Rejection notices are sent to Authors via the Peer Review System. September 15, 2007: Authors submit Final Version of papers This minitrack is part of the Digital Media track. HICSS conferences are devoted to advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Invited papers may be theoretical, conceptual, tutorial or descriptive in nature. Submissions undergo a double-blind peer referee process and those selected for presentation will be published in the Conference Proceedings. Submissions must not have been previously published. Research question: interviewing online subjects?

Hello all I've been reading the general sociology literature on conducting interviews as part of a research project, and some of the literature I have come across makes a point of noting that interviewers should be warning interviewees that any illegal or immoral behaviours uncovered during the course of the research/interview may be reported (for example, Adler and Adler, 2003). My questions in regards to this are: 1) Are those who have or are conducting online interviews or even interviews about internet issues making a point of such cautions? ( I suspect the two approaches have two separate answers). What are others' experiences of this as practice? 2) If so, what is the benchmark for classifying acceptable and unacceptable behaviours? (i.e.: the laws and norms of the interviewers context? Those of the physical jurisdiction of the interviewee, if known? The norms of the virtual group, network, or community under study?) I browsed through the AoIR Ethics Committee document on Internet research, and (as I read it) there seemed to be an implication that the physical jurisdiction of the research subject was the prime candidate for setting a legal or ethical standard more generally in regards to proper treatment of research subjects, but that was just my sense on a first reading. I would be very interested to hear the thoughts and experiences of others on this matter. I admit, as I was reading this, my first thought was 'who would I report it to anyway!' Dear Colleagues, I am a doctoral student in media and public affairs at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and my research focuses on the impact of blogs on state politics around the country. A quick profile of my research is available here: http://governing.typepad.com/13thfloor/2007/04/queen_of_the_st.html As you may know, a lot of research has focused on the impact of the nations big-name, A-list blogs on American politics. Stories about the impact of those blogs range from the downfall of Trent Lott to Dan Rathers memo-gate to George Allens more recent Macaca moment. But to date, no one has considered the impact of blogs at the state level. My observations about the impact of bloggers on state policy and politics in Louisiana have triggered my interest in looking at that dynamic in states around the country. To that end, I am requesting your help in compiling data for my research. I have prepared an online survey for both bloggers and blog readers to complete. The profile snippets you quoted indicate that the dimensions of the debate are pretty well known albeit, pretty well known to those who actively participate in the site rather than just scrobbling music. Although I don't think there's anything surprising going on, it does look like a great example of how group norms emerge, are contested and are expressed on a web2.0 site. Relatedly, I came across a bit of net art based on LastFM recently. The artist had created a set of characters via the wiki and through scrobbling a bunch of music over 24 hours managed to create an imaginary dialogue. This of course hints at one of the challenges of looking at this stuff: the wide variety of idiosyncratic uses to which it is put. Bruce
