The scope of this research concerns North America, but I encourage people from around the globe to respond if they are interested in the topic. The survey should take about 15 minutes of your time, depending on your level of involvement. I appreciate any and all comments and feedback. The information recorded will help both quantitative and qualitative research analysis in the long run. *Importance of this Research* I hope that you will take the time to help because of its importance in the following listed areas of study. Specifically, this research aims to develop: 1) a better understanding of how to improve the potential of networked research via the use of computers. Computers have been called the "imagination machine", but are we using our new abundance of information effectively and imaginatively? 2) an interdisciplinary understanding of how the "two cultures" of the Arts and the Sciences do in fact work together (if they do at all). 3) recommendations for economic policy that is being led by the creative sector. In particular, funding for the Arts has been cut in recent years, despite the huge economic impact that the cultural industries have on local economies; however, the funding for ICT R&D continues to increase without any apparent regard for the environmental problems caused by the development of the infrastructure that is required by a technological society -- how can these two policy arcs be realigned in a focused and mutually beneficial way? 4) maps of ICT networks that emphasize and link these two cultures. If we can visualize how research networks overlap with artistic and literary capital, then perhaps improvements can be made to the systems of communication between the agents of these two cultures. Such an analysis can also be used as a valuable case study for other communities. Lastly, I would gladly ask that you forward on my e-mail address and survey if you know of any other listservs or research networks that might find this project of interest. At this point, I hope that the survey will travel far and wide like a stolen garden gnome taken around the world that will one day come back to its owner. Shades of "A Rape in Cyberspace"

Kelly Garrett wrote regarding this topic: "There seem to be two camps. On one hand, there are those who argue that these are only games. [snipped] Others suggest that players of these games need to respond more rationally to the clearly fictional world. [snipped] The distinction between "real" and "virtual", which has become increasingly blurred in academic circles, seems quite prominent in many of these arguments. What metaphors will be most helpful to a large and diverse audience as they try to grapple with the issues raised by these technologies? I think that finding these metaphors and getting them out into the world is an important contribution well suited to this intellectual community." I spent a lot of years working at jobs that involved talking with others about technology change management issues in various settings (community, education, work). As opposed to talking about this subject using metaphors, it might be more helpful to use direct language when talking about human actions in virtual environments. In particular, grounding conversations in theoretical concepts of human behavior and court cases where individuals are being tried by a jury of their peers for online behaviors where the intent was to harm others, emotionally or physically. One of the theories that is receiving a lot of attention among technology developers and others who are interested in human-computer interactions is the theory of intentionality. Concepts of this psychoanalytic theory (i.e., agency, intent, motivation, volition, etc.) can be used to explore/explain various human actions related to those who develop online environments and others who choose to socialize in them. Information about court cases is also readily available from online news databanks, such as Lexis Nexis, and web sites maintained by courts and attornies. Court cases related to the use of email would be a good starting point for conversations that would be discussing more abstract notions related to interactions in virtual spaces. You also might want to consider talking about the manner in which technology enables one-way, two-way, and many-to-many exchanges with others. In particular, power relationship issues directly related to interactions enabled by these vario! us! communication modes. I had great success talking about changing practices by using a reality-based approach to the topic by assisting others in understanding how their actions, in real-worlds, are mirrored and also mimicked, in online enviornments. Use of metaphors is a common practice among members of the academic community. She is currently working on online pornography and womens use of online sex sites. Katrien Jacobs Katrien Jacobs is assistant professor at City University of Hong Kong. She has published widely on Internet pornography, sexuality, art and censorship. Since 2005 she has organized the netporn conferences at the Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam. Anna Span Anna Span graduated from Central Saint Martins and was the first female director of hardcore pornography in the UK with titles Uniform Behavior, Hoxton Honey and Annas Mates. Since 1998 she has run her own production company, Easy on the Eye productions. The Mysore University library has around 100,000 manuscripts that are written both on paper as well as palm leaves. The idea behind digitising for free is to get free links to these materials once the necessary patenting is complete. Google will also provide expertise, software, and manpower for the digitization work. The laptop is being made by the Chinese firm Quanta: the goal is for Quanta to manufacture 40,000 laptops a month beginning in September, then step up production to 400,000 per month by the end of the year.
