Hi Ellie - Interesting study! I was kind of forced to address the issue in my dissertation, 'Genre trouble and the body that mattered', as 'my' mailing list community died in the course of my ethnography, causing many reflections on mailing lists as a social realistic genre, and the elements required to keep them going (I'll be glad to send you the Pdf if you're interested). In my study the issue of trust and deception is central, and highly related to what and who list members imagine the other to be. In my group, that was a women-only list for lesbian and bisexual women, four of the female participants appeared to be written by one male, and this information was perceived as very disturbing by many participants (as they had taken for granted that the social rule for a self is 1 body - 1 online textual self, that in addition had the 'wrong' body signs regarding gender). In the end the list died, mostly because of the feelings of distrust that grew as a result of the 'revelation' - but also as the list owners did not take social responsibility for keeping a dialogue with the list about the issues of re-organizing the list (to a non-anonymous or closed list, stricter routines for signing up etc. Not that it would have prevented the same to happen again necessarily, but maybe more to make participants feel that their feelings of being emotionally affected was taken seriously). There are of course many different reasons for break-ups of online community, depending on community purpose and subject, participants' relations to each other, organisation form, leadership etc. In addtion to the local specific context, I found it valuable to look at these issues in relation to specific interaction genres on one hand and the particular challenges of the online textual context on the other. When to comes to mailing lists and the issues of trust within contexts that do not have a fictional purpose I found an article of Judith Donath very useful, in Communities in cyberspace (Kollock and Smith 1999), 'Identity and deception in the virtual community'. Of course there are also much to learn from studies that address 'elements of success', that preceeds all cases of break-ups, to look at the social frames of what created the success at one point that gradually changed (I had much use of Nancy Bayms book naturally, of the successful fandom group she studied. In fact my group was also very successful when I started my study, and is written as a 'from life to death story', trying to identity what characterized the different periods and what it was that caused the changes). If you're interested in methodological issues of studying groups in conflict and challenges for the researcher subject, I have also have an article about this in Health research in Cyberspace (NOVA Publ 2006, de Pranee Liamputtong). Quantitative Data about the Internet

Were do researchers find downloadable, raw data dealing with Internet and cell phone use, availability, prices and market penetration for North America and Latin America? Data dealing with digital divide issues would be particularly useful. I am searching for a data set that can be placed in SPSS for multivariate regression analysis in order to improve my understanding of this particular statistical software. Since I have not yet completed my fieldwork and have no data of my own, it would be great to crunch numbers about something that is interesting. TAGS NETWORKS NARRATIVE Exploring the use of tagging and folksonomy in digital narrative research. * Tagging as a form of communication. * Folksonomy as an emergent knowledge network. * Narrative as a common ground. REQUEST FOR INFORMATION We are interested in the ways in which academic researchers studying narratives might develop people-to-people models of knowledge-sharing across disciplines. To that end, we are seeking researchers working in any type of narrative in any discipline to include in our database of projects and individuals. We would also welcome your suggestions for other researchers who might like to hear from us. I'm doing an independent study this semester on the breakup of Internet communities, which I've called (for the project) Internet community dissolution. I've been able to find plenty of articles on Internet communities and relationships, etc, but I haven't seen any on this topic. How is this topic generally phrased in the lit? I came up with absolutely no results when I tried searching for it in various forms in my library's (pathetic) database. Can anyone point me in the direction of where to look or specific articles on this? Also, while I'm here, are there any articles out there that address the definition and types of internet communities? Hi everyone, I know this is very short notice, but a couple of us guys are putting a panel submission together for the AoIR conference this year. If you think you may have an idea to present in the panel, please email me offline with a 150-200 word abstract that fits this panel theme below. It hasn't yet been submitted for approval, so we need contributions by next Monday (29 January). PLAYING RELIGION? Blogs and social networking sites are allowing more and more people to publish their thoughts, attitudes and aspirations about religion for the world to see. The result is an explosion of online forums and communities for users to access resources to develop a religious identity. Early research into online religious identity and community has focused on religion online as separate from offline religious practice, allowing critics to suggest that virtual religion leads to the fragmentation and corruption of religion. But how is religious identity actually played out in these new web locations? Do users of blogs and social networking applications come online to construct alternate religious identities, or to seek an identity that coheres with experiences and practices offline? This thread is interesting.. I admit not being very familiar with studies on teen behavior. But a few years ago I came across the following research, which offer interesting surveys of teens: Barbara Schneider and David Stevenson. (2000) The Ambitious Generation. *Observes teens in the 50s and early 90s. Laurence Steinberg. (1997) Beyond the Classroom. *Observes teens in the mid-to-late 80s. Conclusions in their research may not be as relevant when talking about Millennials and how they interact with their parents today, however.. I can't remember how the surveys address child-parent interactions.. This question is for anyone on our list.. maybe to add more context for the thread -- What are some recent/high-quality empirical studies addressing teen behavior? I'm definitely seeing most American teens doing anything to avoid scrutiny but that doesn't mean that their choices don't terrify their parents. Amongst the more protective parents, _anything_ their teen does that is about social status management terrifies the parents. This creates a pretty bad cycle of deception and attempts to hide what's going on, much of which is "normal" teen behavior. One thing that is definitely at play is that there's a LOT more surveillance going on. Your teen-parent dialogue has been pretty much obliterated because parents aren't allowing their teens out without a justification... no justification, no going out. Plus, the phone is there as a constant leash. I am, sadly, finding that some teens engage in some pretty heart- wrenching activities to gain the attention of parents whose focus is elsewhere. This appears to cross SES. In particular, i've seen self- harm (primarily cutting) used for this purpose. Anything to make their parents pay attention to them... These stories kill me. I've also seen plenty of teens who are genuinely angry at their parents (much of this seems to stem from divorce or violence between the parents); their reaction to this can be self-destruction.
