Thanks, Nicole CALL FOR PAPERS Special Theme Issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication Social Network Sites: People, Practice, and Culture GUEST EDITORS: danah boyd, University of California-Berkeley Nicole Ellison, Michigan State University DEADLINES: Abstracts due: November 28, 2006 Decisions on abstracts: December 8, 2006 Full papers due: February 28, 2007 Anticipated publication: October 2007 / January 2008 FOCUS: Recently, social network sites like Cyworld, MySpace, orkut, and Facebook have captured the public's attention and attracted millions of users. Such sites typically enable individuals to create a profile that defines their online personae through the use of photographs, text, and multimedia elements. More importantly, social network sites enable individuals to articulate their social connections visibly on the site, a practice that may help individuals meet self-presentational and social goals. "Friends" links offer users a window into an emerging and fluid social landscape, allowing them to explore and interact with a larger network via profiles and the communication tools they offer. Together, profiles, traversable "friends" links, and communication tools comprise the backbone of social network sites. This special issue seeks to bring together scholarship on social network sites to highlight current understanding of the practices, implications, culture, and meaning of such sites. There are currently hundreds of social network sites, spanning a wide range of individuals, interests, and technological affordances. While the key technological features are fairly consistent, the cultures that emerge in these sites are varied. For example, music is the cultural glue of some sites, while others gather people around particular interests, such as political beliefs or pet ownership. Some sites cater to a wide variety of people, while others target people based on race, age, sexuality, religion, language, or nationality. Sites vary in the extent to which they incorporate new tools, such as mobile technologies, blogging, and photo/video-sharing. This special edition will bring together experts from the fields of information, communication, sociology, anthropology, HCI, policy, design, and education to explore the different socio-cultural practices that take place on social network sites. We are looking for papers that address social network sites from a variety of perspectives and from different methodological and theoretical traditions. Potential questions that submissions might address include, but are not limited to: What strategies do individuals use to craft an online presentation of self in a profile, and for what audiences? What privacy or other concerns emerge from use of these sites? What kinds of policy decisions and educational practices might ameliorate these concerns? Can we predict social, psychological, or other outcomes from profile and network analysis? How can "friends" networks most usefully be visualized? What can we learn from network visualizations? How does the network structure differ among sites, and what are the social and cultural implications of these differences? How does the structure of networks in these sites compare to the networks of other communities? What are the patterns of relationship development in these spaces? Do individuals use these sites to meet new people or to maintain pre-existing, offline connections? What role do race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and sexual orientation play in social network sites? While all social network sites allow participants to create a profile and publicly articulate their social connections within the system, the line between social network sites and dating sites, MMOGs, media sharing sites, blogging tools, and other social community sites can be blurry. Rather than enforcing a strict definition of what constitutes a social network site, we ask authors to explain how their site of study fits into a rubric of social network sites. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE: Potential authors should submit a preliminary proposal of 500 words by November 28, 2006, to danah boyd (dmb(a)sims.berkeley.edu) and Nicole Ellison (nellison(a)msu.edu) TXT, RTF or DOC formats are preferred. Proposals should indicate (a) the central research question; (b) theoretical and methodological frameworks that will be used in the analysis; (c) a preliminary sketch of what claims the author(s) expect to make; (d) the author(s) rubric of what constitutes a social network site and how their research fits into this framework. While the proposal should include which site(s) is being addressed, the author(s) can assume that the reviewers are familiar with the site. Thus, it is not necessary to describe the site in detail in the proposal. A brief author biography should also be submitted. Early submissions and questions are welcome. Authors whose proposals are accepted for inclusion will be invited to submit a full paper of roughly 7,000-9,000 words for peer review by February 28, 2007. Anticipated publication date for the special issue is October 2007 or January 2008. Since JCMC is an interdisciplinary journal, authors should plan for papers that will be accessible to non-specialists, and should make their papers relevant to an interdisciplinary audience.

Ambient intelligence (AmI) evokes a near future in which humans will be surrounded by 'always-on', unobtrusive, interconnected intelligent objects few of which will bear any resemblance to the computing devices of today. Devices embedded in the environment will communicate seamlessly about any number of different topics e.g. your present state of health, when you last ate. Interactions with devices and at the same time other people will become anywhere, anytime. This seamless exchange of information implicates, trust, privacy and identity issues as core variables that need to be fully understood if we are to adopt and use AmI systems. This special issue will bring together papers that investigate trust and privacy issues, theoretical and methodological approaches, policy and legal implications related to information exchange in an AmI world. Papers from a broad range of social science perspectives are encouraged. Submissions can be in the form of full papers (maximum 35 double-spaced manuscript pages including figures, tables, and references) or in the form of short reports (5 - 12 double-spaced pages). Surveillance and Society Issue 5 (2/3): Smart Borders and Mobilities: Spaces, Zones, Enclosures Edited by: Louise Amoore, Stephen Marmura, and Mark Salter Publication date: September 2007 Deadline for submissions: 1st March 2007 Call for Papers The border has been called the fundamental political institution, delineating between inside/outside, us/them, safe/dangerous, known/unknown. With the increased ability of state and commercial agents to overcome and reinvent traditional sovereign lines, borders are instantiated throughout society not simply at border posts but also at airports, in databases, through international call centers, and with identity documents. Cross-border data-flows may complicate realities already identified as problematic within information-based societies. Surveillance practices in public spaces, border zones, and the workplace may become both more nuanced and more intrusive, as we see with anti-globalization protests, Schengen border zones, and in low-wage non-unionized labour shops. The tracking and identification of specific individuals or groups by government agencies may be intensified. Consumers may be increasingly subjected to 'foreign' marketing and advertising strategies not legally sanctioned within their own societies. Citizens may have data transmitted and analyzed far from the point of origin or of collection in the cases of passenger profiling or the more general war on terror. Wider and wider risk groups are being surveilled in ways that circumvent or restructure borders. Surveillance and Society is seeking papers that examine how borders produce or reinforce spaces, zones, or enclosures and the processes, structures, and institutions of control that exceed the border. The editors are interested in how the mobility of data itself is transforming, what kinds of boundaries and exceptions this produces, how this rearticulates relationships between science, law and the political, and how the border is realized via data. We are seeking both theoretical and empirical articles which illuminate this set of issues. In addition to sociology, the subject of borders and surveillance holds relevance for a wide range of academic disciplines including geography, law, cultural anthropology, philosophy, and political science. We encourage contributions which draw attention to geo-demographic, legal, cultural, ethical, technological, political and/or social-economic aspects of data-flows. Possible topics of interest include: Implications for privacy in cross-border data-flows; Effect of RFID or biometric technologies on both identity documents and border policing; Dataveillance of financial transactions by both commercial enterprises and governments; Strategies of risk displacement and risk management through knowledge-industries; International surveillance of marginal or "dangerous" populations; International comparative studies of state approaches to the governance of cross-border data; Comparisons between corporate vs. state influence over data-flows; Divergences in relevant public attitudes towards privacy and personal data flows in different countries; Parallels and anomalies concerning data-flows and international flows of goods, currency and persons. A24; Lipton, Eric The Department of Homeland Security is funding the development of "sentiment analysis" software by a consortium of major universities that uses natural language processing technology to scan foreign publications for negative views on America and its government. The goal of the three-year, $2.4 million grant is to help DHS locate possible dangers to the U.S. The software would provide Homeland Security personnel with instant access to an entire article that contains subversive statements. While efforts have always been made to stay abreast of global opinions of our country, this new technology will make the process far more efficient. Cornell University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Utah are working on the research, which is led by Joe Kielman, who says it could take several years to get the system in place. He says, "We want to understand the rhetoric that is being published and how intense it is, such as the difference between dislike and excoriate." Kielman noted that they are not monitoring U.S.-based news sources. Currently, the system is being fed hundreds of articles published between 2001 and 2002 from a variety of publications and tested on its ability to discern between similar statements. The task of classifying and ranking opinions expressed about America without error has proven quite challenging, says Cornell computer science professor Claire T. Cardie and University of Pittsburgh computer science professor Janyce M. Wiebe. Electronic Privacy Information Center executive director Marc Rotenberg calls the research "really chilling," and compares it to the Defense Department's aborted Total Information Awareness project. From Lurking to Querying (questions about graduate studies)

I've been following the ranging (and sometimes boomeranging) topics on this list for several weeks now, I've even gone as far as to contact some of you personally for advice on the subject of graduate studies, but having conducted a fair amount of my own research, I find myself no further progressed than I was a month ago. So I find myself asking you all directly for advice. I'm a fourth year undergrad, doing an honours BA in English and Social & Political Though. I'm looking to move onto graduate studies next year, focusing more carefully on Cyber culture, the impact the Internet and digital technologies have on our language, the English western discourse, and the related fields of video gaming and comics (print and web based) as forms of narrative. I've been flipping and flopping back and forth between finalizing my study field, it's not something I want to commit to til I'm sure of it, but I'm looking at masters programs in Ontario, Canada, for the time being, then hopefully PhD programs elsewhere. The two main schools I'm looking at for an MA are York University (Toronto) and Western (London), both Ontario schools that seem to have programs that look at related fields to my interests -- but I'm wondering if I have missed any institutions in my research that might be applicable. York has a Humanities MA that addresses my research, and I could probably find faculty in the English department that would also be interested, Western, however, seems to have at least half a dozen minds working in that field, but it means moving (something that might not be possible for a year at least). Any advice or insight you can offer, or opinions in general, are greatly appreciated.
