G'day ! I'm afraid the following PhD scholarship is available only for Australian citizens and permanent residents, but there may have been an influx of those to this list with the recent conference... ARC Linkage Grant - PHD Student Scholarship (ARC APAI) Opportunities in Citizen Journalism COMMENCING IN FEBRUARY 2007 A three year PhD scholarship exists at QUT as part of an ARC Linkage Project on the possibilities for citizen journalism to generate new forms of news through user-generated online content. Project Title Investigating Innovative Applications of Digital Media for Participatory Journalism and Citizen Engagement in Australian Public Communication Project Description The aims of this ARC Linkage Project are to: (i) investigate emergent forms of online news and information in Australia; (ii) prototype new forms of news production, editing, distribution and collaboration through user-generated online content; (iii) establish new channels of interaction between established and emergent media; (iv) enable wider networks of public communication, media analysis and public policy formation, linked to diversification of sources of information, perspectives and practices. The PhD student will be involved in the following activities: * Empirical analysis of Australian online news and opinion sites and network analysis of linkages across these online sites; * Evaluation of emergent forms of news production and distribution practices in these emergent media; * Evaluation of user/participant data in a dedicated online project site; * Investigation of comparable international examples; * Dissemination of research findings through both academic publications and public communications media. Selection Criteria The PhD student should possess: * A high class Honours thesis or equivalent (e.g. Masters or work experience) in media and communications (including new media studies), journalism, sociology or politics; * High level skills in applied media research, particularly in new media; * High-level technical and non-technical verbal and written communication skills; * Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. The following attributes are also desirable: * Practical experience in media-related activities, particularly in emergent media such as online journalism, blogs and collaborative publishing systems; * A demonstrated understanding of communication skills in the online environment. Stipend The stipend is a living allowance of $24,650 per annum in 2006, tax exempt and indexed annually for the three-year tenure. Eligibility Applicants must have a minimum Honours 2A or equivalent, and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Hi All ! I am currently tring to create a timeline, from 1945 to current days which aims to identify the occurrence of ICT's in Information Management (IM) and Journalism day-to-day practices. The idea is to have an overlook of either devices/hardwares or tools/softwares which could have provoked major changes on professional pratices. I already tried to do it by myself but the problem is that I was born in 1982. You will easily understand that I don't remember how those trade could be without Internet, Cellular phones or Google. The major difficulty I encounter is to close the gap between the offcial date of creation of technologies and their actual adoption and généralisation, which seems to be more accurate in order to analyze my timeline. For exemple: Even if the creation "Internet" may be "placed" in the late sixties on the timeline, the effective generalization of its use by IM and Journlism profesionals would be better placed in the middle of the nineties. This situation is almost the same for all ICT's. Therefore, my question is: What are, according to you, the ICT's which have had an influence on professionals pratices and where would you place them on a timeline ? I would be very pleased to get input from experienced scholars or profesionals as this list's readers, in order to help me to focus properly on that topic. I Hope to read from you soon. I have followed with interest the commentary on wikipedia. As a researcher I rarely use it and when I do, it is for base line information, as a starting point. What interests me more, particularly in the front-line work I am engaged in, is the community which has developed around not only the wikipedia phenomenon as well the whole wiki culture. What concerns me about Charlie Balch’s comment on ‘academic snobbery’ is that it is contrary to what academia is classically supposed to be about, and is certainly counter to the rapidly growing Open Courseware [OCW] movement. I suggest it might be incumbent on those said same academics to perhaps nudge the quality of wikis in general and wikipedia in particular which in turn improve the quality of the knowledge within the community as a whole. The ‘net has provided a means to accelerate the advancement of knowledge across a wide area, it is, I suggest the responsibility of those who are able, to help those who are learning to have the benefit, at least, of knowledge which is well founded. There was a short presentation about the status of articles (which ones get in, which ones get selected for the daily feature article etc. at the Social Computing Seminar at Microsoft last spring.
