Hi, One thing that is classically overlooked is the electronically mediated communication via mobile devices (specifically the mobile phone). CMC excludes it specifically while when talking about ICT and really meaning computer based IP traffic, the omission is somewhat different. I know that IP based interaction is coming via mobile devices (WiFi, mobile IM, mobile e-mail, etc) but obviously I think that it is also worthwhile to consider mobile telephony and mobile text based interaction) Rich L.

non-profit web sites

Hi everyone, I am seeking advice in relation to a subject that I am currently researching. I am doing a study on non-profit web sites -what are the online discourses articulated by ethnic community-based groups in the US? I have conducted interviews with webmasters. However, my colleagues are raising serious doubts about the representativeness of the information and opinions provided by the webmasters. Because of the nature of the technology they believe that the web sites and their contents are just products of webmasters and not of the entire association. In other words, if you carry out research in non-profit groups, and you conduct interviews with for example the director of the group, how representative would be her opinions in relation to those of the rest of the group? Could I take for good the contents posted on the web sites as products of the entire association? Any suggestion, advice, bibliographical reference would be much appreciate it. Thanks Pedro J. rights of access to the Internet

Hello All, I'd like to send a question related to what Erick Iriarte Ahon (for Alfa-Redi) writes on the way the complex context of the (new) technologies appears to generate at least two questions, namely, whether there exists a right to access the Internet as an instrument to access information and whether there exists an obligation on the part of governments to offer such access in a general (universal) way. (I'm translating from his recent AIR-L contribution in Spanish: "En un contexto de evolucion permanente en el cual las tecnologias van hacia la convergencia, y los procesos sociales ncrementan el uso cotidiano de las TICs; en donde las politicas de TICs han logrado evolucionar a componentes de TICpD en las Pol?ticas de Desarrollo, y en el cual la brecha social se amplia en su componente digital (lease brecha digital), la pregunta que surge es: ?existe un derecho de acceder a internet como instrumento para acceder a la informacion?, y por ende ?existe una obligacion por parte de los gobiernos de brindar este acceso de manera universal?"). I hesitated as to whether to send my query directly to Alfa-Redi or here and finally decided on the second option. This comment involves a recent example I found of a relatively new technology, the Power Point presentation, in this case, used in conjunction with sending information to the mainstream press and to nongovernmental (perhaps paragovernmental) organizations. What I'm referring to is an article by Matthew Kalman in the _San Francisco Chronicle_ of 21 July 2006. The title of the article is enough I think to suggest the complexity of the situation: "Israel set war plan more than a year ago". In it, Kalman notes that the presentation his article refers to set out their policy in Lebanon at the present moment. The article can be retrieved by going to the _Chronicle_ website and searching by Kalman's full name or, directly, at: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/07/21/MNG2QK396D1.DTL… My main question is this: the presentation the article speaks of was on precisely what the title says, "setting out the plan for the current operation [in Lebanon] in revealing detail," in the author's words. But while it was a Power Point talk given to journalists and others in positions of some authority, it seems to me that the main question is: what would happen if the presentation had been done via the Internet? Con el transcurrir de los años hemos pasado del acceso a la información, al acceso a los medios para acceder a la informacion. Del acceso a la telefonia a los conceptos de Acceso Universal y Servicio Universal. En un contexto de evolucion permanente en el cual las tecnologias van hacia la convergencia, y los procesos sociales incrementan el uso cotidiano de las TICs; en donde las politicas de TICs han logrado evolucionar a componentes de TICpD en las Políticas de Desarrollo, y en el cual la brecha social se amplia en su componente digital (lease brecha digital), la pregunta que surge es: ¿existe un derecho de acceder a internet como instrumento para acceder a la informacion?, y por ende ¿existe una obligacion por parte de los gobiernos de brindar este acceso de manera universal? C&T 2007 welcomes contributions from researchers in many fields, given the multidisciplinary and collaborative nature of inquiries into the interaction between community and technology. For example, ICTs can support community formation and development by facilitating communication and coordination among members. Hence, new research into the creation, use, and evaluation of ICTs aimed at community support is appearing at an increasing rate. New phenomena such as blogs, podcasting, smart mobs, and the popularity of social network software illustrate some of the new areas for research into the powerful and changing connections between community and technology. Empirical, conceptual, and design contributions are invited, involving a range of methodologies and approaches. More information is available at the conference web site. We also invite the submission of proposals for workshops, which will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2007, the first day of the conference. Workshops can be either half or full day in length and built around specific themes relevant to the conference. Workshop proposals should be 4 pages in length, and should define the theme(s) of the workshop, the main activities and goals, the background and contact information of the organizer(s), the maximum number of participants in the workshop, the means of soliciting participants, and the method of selecting participants. Proposals should also include a brief summary of no more than 150 words suitable for describing the workshop in the conference program. Proceedings The Communities and Technologies 2007 Proceedings will be published by Springer, and will be available both as a bound volume and online for global digital access.
