Research on Internet Use in Finland?

Hi, Ronda Hauben and I will be in Finland at the end of May attending a history of technology conference. Finland has played an important role providing innovative uses for the Internet such as IRC and intellectual frames to look at the Internet such as the Information Society. Also, Finland is the birthplace of Linux. In recent literature Finland is often mentioned as sharing with South Korea the distinction of the largest percent of the population connected to the Internet via broadband. Can anyone point me to any research on the impact of Internet use on Finnish society or politics or other aspects particular to Finland? I am especially interested in connections between Internet usage and further democratization of societies. Also, Ronda and I would very much like to meet or correspond with people on the AIR-L list in Finland who share our interests in the Internet, in the democratization process and netizens or in the history of science and technology, so we can learn more about the Finnish contribution to the Internet and to democratic practice. AoIR Conference === Internet Research 7.0 === "Internet Convergences" Hilton Hotel, Brisbane, Australia === 27-30 September 2006 The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to announce that registrations are now open for its 2006 conference, to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Brisbane, Australia, on 27-30 Sep. 2006. This major international conference takes place in the southern hemisphere for the first time. Themed 'Internet Convergences', the seventh annual AoIR conference will explore how the Internet acts in both converging and fragmenting ways - physical, cultural, technological, political, social - on local, regional, and global scales. Internationally, AoIR is the leading academic association dedicated to research and analysis of the Internet and related network technologies. Established in 2000, it has grown to become a key player in supporting Internet research and disseminating findings. A key reason for holding the conference outside of North America or Europe is to emphasise the international perspective of this global, networked organisation. The conference will feature keynote lectures by Professor Guo Liang, deputy director of the Center for Social Development in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and Professor John Hartley, Research Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Creative Industries and Innovation at Queensland University of Technology and Australia Research Council Federation Fellow. Heightened processing power, new categories of software, and, indeed, novel conceptions of computing are offering scholars opportunities to analyze, express and instruct in ways unimaginable even in the early 1990s. Some human science researchers know this. We believe more should. For this reason, the Canadian Committee for History and Computing and the Society for Digital Humanities are pleased to announce their joint sponsorship of the symposium The Computer: The Once and Future Medium for the Social Sciences and the Humanities. The purpose of the symposium will be to introduce scholars to a wide array of new technologies and approaches, with non-technical papers on topics ranging from the use of virtual reality to construct model sites in ancient Rome to the use of simulations to plan for pandemics and the use of software to model the impact that emotion plays in individual and group decision making. The symposium will be convened 8:30 a.m. on May 30th, 2006 at York University during the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The symposium is open to all Congress delegates, and there is no charge to attend. The day-long proceedings will take place at Vanier College, Room 135, with an evening reception to follow at Founders College Assembly Hall.
