Hello, I have a student interested in theories that explain the use of hesitations, hedges and the like. He has encountered them in his transcriptions and become interested in how to analyze them. What is new for me, looking at Myspace's role in political organizing, is how Internet software that has been designed primarily for getting fun information about other people (pictures, interests, etc.) for social and dating purposes seems to have potential for sparking political involvement across distances, in a way that both text-based Internet and mass media are less suited to. We know from studies of political attitudes and behavior that personal contacts are very important motivators for altering both. Gustavo, the high school student whose interview I posted, describes the Myspace slideshow of a march in california as "the main thing that got my attention" and spurred him to organize where he lived in texas. Without inferring too much about what he was initially looking for on Myspace that morning, I can certainly imagine how someone might feel motivated to become an organizer after seeing pictures of peers elsewhere marching for a cause one shares an interest in. In earlier times, a cute and funny campus organizer might come to your dorm room and casually tell you about a rally, or a cool and slightly older kid down the street might be a member of an activist group and get you interested in it. These people still exist, of course, but now they can be thousands of miles away with profiles you are checking out anonymously on Myspace. That seems a lot more compelling at the pre-commitment stage than watching a news report about a march, or getting an email message from someone you don't know and can't see. Then, once you've decided to organize, you contact your friends and schoolmates using phone trees, email, flyers etc., because those are more effective media for targeted communication within one's preexisting network. Myspace seems more suited to the initial stage of political involvement, providing the spark of interest that comes, for example, from curiosity about another person and what they are doing, and a desire to compare it to what *you* are doing -- sitting in your room looking at Myspace profiles, perhaps, while others just like you are marching for your rights. A tool for doing that across distances, available to and used by most young people, was missing in earlier eras. It will be interesting to see how much difference it makes. And I seen a bulletin that a girl from L.A. had posted up; and it showed, you know, the march the rally that L.A. had and the hundreds of thousands of people that showed up. And it also had some sort of a slideshow. And it showed these pictures of, you know, the rally and migrant workers and everything. And I guess that that was the main thing that kind of got my attention and said, well, if California, you know, is trying so hard and people around the U.S. is trying so hard -- because you hear about the news, you know, people marching in other states -- and I said, well, we should try to do something here. Her first book on it is Context and Consciousness (an edited volume) and another will appear this fall. Although she doesn't work with mobile devices, she'll probably have suggestions for who does. Hi all, On behalf of Philip Brey, director of the project, please pass on the following to interested scholars and researchers - The Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, University of Twente, is looking for Three Postdocs Three full-time Postdoc positions for a period of three years for the project Evaluating the Cultural Quality of New Media. Towards a Philosophy of Human-Media Relations About the Overall Project All three Postdoc positions are part of a prestigious and exciting international research project titled Evaluating the Cultural Quality of New Media. This five-year project, which will include five researchers and will involve collaboration with leading international scholars and research centres, has as its aim to develop a framework for better normative analyses of new media and new media culture, especially in relation to their contribution to the quality of life (“the good life”) and the quality of society. Project leader is Dr. Philip Brey (PhD, UC San Diego). He will be working on the project almost full-time. The project will be part of a new international Centre of Excellence in Ethics and Technology of the departments of philosophy of Twente University, Delft University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology. Postdoc Project 1 - The Quality of Virtual Environments and Tools This subproject aims to perform a philosophical analysis of the implications of ever increasing virtualization for the quality of life and of society. Virtualization is defined as the digital production of interactive structures, whether graphical or symbolic, that mirror things and events in the physical world. What are the implications of this process for moral and social identity, embodiment, and conceptions of reality, and how can these implications be normatively evaluated? Postdoc Project 2 – The Quality of Computer-Mediated Practice This subproject focuses on computer-mediated social practices in friendships, love relationships, and community life. Increasingly, the social world is held together by electronic networks. More and more, communication, social relationships, and community formation take place over such networks. The aim of the project is to perform a philosophical analysis of the implications of this trend for the quality of life and of society. Postdoc Project 3 – The Quality of Digital Information This subproject focuses on the changed value of information after the digital revolution. It will analyze various conceptions of the value of information, including liberal conceptions that emphasize its role in enhancing autonomy, communitarian conceptions that relate it to the well-being of communities and society, and culturalist conceptions that emphasize the aesthetic, moral or spiritual value of information. It will then analyze positive and negative appraisals of the impact of the Internet and other digital media relative to these ideals. Profile For all three projects: A PhD degree or equivalent degree in philosophy. Consideration will also be given to candidates with a multidisciplinary PhD degree on a topic relevant to the project and some background in philosophy. Demonstrable interest in philosophical issues relating to information technology and new media. Good analytical skills. Good communication skills in English, in writing as well as orally.
