Sorry for crossposting ... Dear colleagues. On July 23 - 29, 2006 there is the XVI ISA World Congress of Sociology in Durban, South Africa, organized by International Sociological Association (ISA). As organizers of one of the session of the Research Committee on Logic and Methodology RC33 - the session on New technologies and data collection in the social sciences - we are inviting you to consider the participation and sending an abstract for this (or also other) sessions (see sessions at http://www.ucm.es/info/isa/congress2006/rc/rc33_durban.htm) New technologies and data collection in the social sciences Session chairs: Katja Lozar Manfreda and Vasja Vehovar, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, The permanent flow of technological advancements presents an important driving force for methodological development in social sciences. This session is thus seeking papers that will contribute to our understanding of how new technologies (especially Internet services and mobile technologies) are influencing the way we do quantitative and qualitative research in social sciences. We are especially interested in papers that would show how new technologies are used for collecting data. In particular, the following areas are of special interest: - experimental comparisons of alternative design approaches (contrasting modes using new ICT with other modes of data collection), - exploration of methods for decreasing and adjustment non-response or coverage errors when new ICT are used for data collection - evaluation of alternative sampling schemes, - demonstration of the use of new and innovative research designs as frontiers of technology. Took me a couple of minutes to understand what it is :) I was testing http://www.zoominfo.com/ that is supposed to collect info about someone online in one space (was wondering how much on me is there - re: http://blog.mathemagenic.com/2005/09/14.html#a1667) Between other things it has a feature that allows you to send email to the person you are searching for without disclosing it. I was wondering what email it had in the system for me and send a message to myself - and it got posted to AOIR :( So, as everyone could see now, it assumes that I have two emails one of which is air-l(a)aoir.org Tools like this one obviousely add a very specific spin to all discussions we may have on privacy and ethics....
