Intended for both graduate students and practitioners in the field, this work covers topics in the areas of privacy, access, and security in relation to information systems associated with homeland security, the Patriot Act, and other initiatives related to anti-terrorism and emergency response. The book, titled "Patriotic Information Systems: Privacy, Access, and Security Issues of Bush Information Policy," arises from the Winter, 2005, issue of the "Social Science Computer Review," which is running a symposium issue on "Patriotic Information Systems," examining these issues. The articles in this symposium are listed below. The book will contain revised versions of these essays along with a somewhat larger number of new contributions, for which this is the call for participation. If you or a colleague are working in this area and would like to participate in this project, please email an outline of your proposed contribution to Todd Loendorf <tloendorf(a)bellsouth.net>, with the phrase "Patriotic Information Systems" in the subject line. You are also welcome to write to the coeditor, G. David Garson, on matters related to this project (<david_garson(a)ncsu.edu>). The proposal deadline is December 15, but we shall be making editorial decisions about content between now and then so earlier proposals are welcome, particularly since we must have a first draft of contributions by May 15, so they may be reviewed and authors may finalize their contributions later in summer 2006. An outline of your proposed contribution should be submitted, clearly explaining the scope of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified between now and January 14, 2006, at the latest, about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. At the forthcoming Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology there will be a session to discuss the outcome of a research project that built a "Knowledge map of information science", carried out by Dr. C. Zins, from Haifa, using a critical Delphi technique see: http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM05/abstracts/176.html As part of this, as noted in the introductory final report "Forty five scholars formulated about 130 definitions" of data, information and knowledge, that yielded 6 discrete models. There is a blog to ask questions to the session participants. Best-- Julian Kilker =================== University of Nevada at Las Vegas Open Positions Two Full-Time Positions The Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at University of Nevada Las Vegas seeks applicants for two openings for 9-month, tenure-track positions starting August 2006. Job 1: Senior Professor candidate will teach combination of courses in theoretical and applied public relations, advertising, and social marketing as well as areas of candidate specialization. Applicants must have demonstrated record of outstanding teaching and/or training experience and nationally recognized program in research and/or creative activity. Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication or relevant field required with professional experience desirable. Preference for candidates with demonstrated record suitable for tenure consideration at time of hire. Job 2: Assistant Professor candidate will teach theoretical and applied undergraduate and graduate classes in journalism and mass media including media law and maintain and active research program leading to scholarly publications. Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication or related field or a JD from an accredited college or university required with professional experience desirable. Preference will be given to applicants with a media law specialty and demonstrated record of successful teaching and research. Program: School was created in 2004 and includes congenial and growing faculty. For the most part, respondents were in agreement that information is a component of knowledge. Many equated "information" with "raw facts" or "data" and saw "knowledge" as having with more "meaning." Knowledge is the "application of information." Three respondents called knowledge information that had been "internalized." Another referred to it as "information with context." No respondents saw the terms as synonymous and the majority used the exact terms "meaning" and "value" in association with the concept "knowledge."
