We ask for your understanding that we cannot accept papers sent via email. Authors will receive notification of acceptance by: November 30, 2005. Researchers: 150 Euros Students: 90 Euros Presenting participants: 120 Euros (first authors only) Commerical participants (e.g. company representatives, free- lancers, consultants): 390 Euros Participants living in the EU will have to pay full conference fees in advance. Other participants may pay their fees on the conference date at the venue. Day tickets are not available. new media and shock

Hello all--a colleague of mine asked me if I could help him with the following question. I'm not an authority on the Frankfurt School or its theorization of shock but hope that some of you out there might be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ken His problem/question is as follows: Much ink has been spilt over shock within Frankfurt School writings. A concept clearly taken over from Simmel and Freud, shock runs to the heart of Benjamin's media theory. But have Benjamin and Adorno appropriated the term as face value without ever considering the implications of their assertions? Adorno's thinking would seem to intimate that at some future date nothing will ever shock us anymore, for the body will have developed such a thick protective barrier that nothing harmful will ever get through--an idea worth resisting in itself. Are there any sustained studies of the question of shock particularly within the domain of media Are there any articles within media theory that address the matter of shock in a postmodern, digital world?

Conference costs

Call for papers: Exploring Gender, Feminism and Technology from a Communication Perspective

Call for Submissions Women's Studies in Communication announces a special issue on "Exploring Gender, Feminism and Technology from a Communication Perspective" to appear in September 2006. Across disciplines, studies of technology have been a rich source for understanding women's experience and for advancing feminist theory. The goal of this special issue is to emphasize the contribution of communication practice and/or theory in exploring this relationship. More specific themes within this general emphasis may include examination of women's uses of particular technologies, the gendered nature of technology, the effect of technologies (or technological culture and globalization) upon women's lives, and developing/critiquing feminist theories of technology. Any type of technology may be considered; although they are welcome, manuscripts need not be limited to communication and information technologies. Manuscripts may by theoretical, empirical, or descriptive. For empirical studies, we welcome the full range of methodologies. All manuscripts must be clearly labelled as submissions intended for this special issue and submitted following standard guidelines described at http://www.bk.psu.edu/faculty/ramsey/submissions.html. AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open

Online registration is now open for the sixth annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers to be held in Chicago October 6 - 9, 2005 (with pre-conference workshops held on October 5, 2005) at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile hotel. To register for the conference and workshops go to: https://www.conted.vt.edu/ssl/aoir/index.lasso You will be able to pay the registration fees by credit card or by check. You can also at this time register for the conference banquet (taking place on Friday, October 7, at the Mid-America Club, on the 80th (top) floor of the Aon Center, Chicago's second tallest building, and the conference brunch (taking place on Sunday, October 9). [Vegetarian options will be available at both meals.] You may also register for a historical tour of Chicago's "L" elevated train (taking place on Saturday morning, October 8). Join others in an AoIR-only L car for a tour of some of the L system's oldest routes with the Chicago Transit Authority's historian. A link to online hotel registration is provided on the site after you have clicked the "submit" button and sent in your registration. We have negotiated the best possible rate from the hotel and encourage you to book a room early. As is the case with most all hotel-based conferences we have to meet the minimum occupancy with which we are able to use the hotel's meeting rooms and if we do not meet that occupancy rate then we'll have to increase the registration fees, to cover the additional meeting room cost.
