Women in Action Call for Articles for Women in Action (WIA) NO. 1-2005 Women in Action, a magazine published by Isis International-Manila, covers a broad range of issues affecting women globally, with focus on the particular needs and concerns of women in the Global South as well as the problems of under-represented social groups in the Global North. For its next issue (1, 2005), Women in Action will feature the theme "Cultural Diversity." We welcome articles that discuss how women from the South and from the North address problems pertaining to cultural diversity in relation to the various aspects of ICT and media. We especially invite you to contribute articles that bridge theoretical elaboration with practical implementation on the following topics: Culture in relation to Identity, Development and Democracy: - How has the concept of cultural pluralism evolved from post-war reconstruction to the rise of newly independent states to satisfy the processes of globalization? - What kinds of dialogues between state and societal mechanisms do cultural policies reflect towards constructive pluralism? - Do cultural policies and implementations for the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions reaffirm or deny the rights and the full participation of women at all levels? The accelerating interdependence between Culture and Economies: - Are cultural goods becoming consumer goods in the guise of promoting cultural diversity? - Have the events of 11 September 2001 and the resulting conflicts between cultural relativism and fundamentalism, secularism and religion affected the production, dissemination and function of culturally diverse goods and services? - Is the need for developing countries to participate in globalization affecting our tangible and intangible heritage as a result of the ambiguity/dialectic between cultural and economic value? - How can a balance be made between the rights of the owners of cultural expressions and the rights of all people to access, enjoy, and participate in culture? - Who are the owners of "cultural expressions" and to which "culture" do they belong? The growth of Multicultural Societies and how they redefine Cultural Identity: - How are issues of marginalization, social exclusion, economic and cultural rights being addressed within societies themselves and in relation to others? - How do we balance cultural specificities and identities with more universal obligations? - How do the debates and practices surrounding international relief and aid affect cultural approaches to natural disasters, HIV/AIDS, and armed conflict? - How do differing state conceptions on citizenship and sexual diversity affect the rights of women, children and indigenous peoples? We encourage you to submit photos, graphics or comic strips that may be used for your article or for the issue in general. We provide a modest honorarium for articles and photos or graphics that get published. Photos or artwork should be in TIFF format, scanned at 300 dpi. Please zip the file before e-mailing it. You may also send it by post. Articles should be within 1,500 - 2,000 word range. Deadline for submission is 31 March 2005. It's on my website, and published in Kollock-Smith _Communities in Cyberspace_ and with some revisions in my edited _Networks in the Global Village_. Most of the article is an exasperated shout at comp sci folks who write about "community" online without any realization that there is a century of relevant scholarly research/lore about how communities function. Apologies for any repetition ------------------------------ Visiting Research Fellowships, "Networked Publics" Annenberg Center for Communication University of Southern California The Annenberg Center for Communication (ACC) at the University of Southern California invites applications for two postdoctoral positions and one visiting scholar position on the theme of "Networked Publics." ACC is a research institute devoted to the study of new media from an interdisciplinary perspective. The 2005-06 theme invokes emergent changes to how we are engaging as audiences, activists, citizens, and producers in maturing networked media ecologies. These changes include but are not limited to the changing relationship between production and consumption, viral and peer-to-peer distribution, and networked lateral political mobilization. Although the Internet is clearly a central player, we consider media forms both old and new as part of a much broader media ecology undergoing profound social, technical, and cultural transformation. The ACC themes are intended to convene an interdisciplinary cohort of scholars to focus on a topic of pressing concern not well addressed in more established disciplinary and departmental institutions. This cohort will include the three visiting positions advertised here as well as fellows selected from among USC faculty and graduate students. The visiting fellows will be expected to pursue their research in residence at the Annenberg Center during the 2005-06 academic year. They will collectively be responsible for organizing one conference and a monthly speaker series and will be expected to attend and organize a weekly seminar of graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty fellows on the theme of Networked Publics. They may not hold any other appointment during the period of the fellowship. The postdoctoral fellowship is intended for scholars who have completed their Ph.D within five years of August 2005. It carries a stipend of $40,000 in addition to a limited amount of funds to support research and relocation expenses. The visiting scholar position is intended for a mid-career scholar with a well -established track record and demonstrated leadership and expertise related to the theme. The stipend will be commensurate with the scholar's current position. ACC will also provide a limited amount of funds to support research and relocation expenses. Applicants should clearly indicate whether they are applying for a postdoctoral position or the visiting scholar position. Applications should include a CV, a cover letter including a personal statement, and a brief statement of research goals in relation to the theme. Three letters of recommendation are to be sent directly by the writers (letters may also be faxed to 213-747-4981). Union use of the Web

Dear AoIRers, I am a Ph.D. student working on a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada project. The project is a union and university research alliance that is examining the impact and the obstacles of socially responsible investment of union pension funds and the role and educational needs of union pension fund trustees. Central to our project is the ongoing development of a website to provide accessible informal education for unionists interested in pension fund investment. As part of the website, we are also investigating the possibility of developing an online forum for labour pension fund activists. I am looking for literature and research examples that address union activist use of websites and online forums. Specifically I am interested in how the labour movement has used the Internet for both formal and informal learning and any research that explores the development of online communities of practice both within specific unions as well as across the labour sector. Hi, I am aware of two projects that have looked into mobile communication in various Central European countries. These are the EURESCOM P903 project that included the Czech Republic and the EU IST project e-living that included Bulgaria. When you say young people I am not sure what age you are using. Since these were survey projects the lowest age groups were not down into the early adolescent years as I recall. I hope that this helps. Also Johnny Mnemonic highlights the social divisions which he perceived as being exacerbated by technology. Sherry Turkle turned out to be powerfully prophetic in "Life on the screen" when she talked about "RL" being just another window and not always the most important one!
