The Iowa Journal of Communication announces a 2005 special issue on internet communication, guest edited by Mark Johns. Manuscripts should be received no later than *** MARCH 1, 2005 *** Computer-mediated technologies (CMTs) are no longer the province of "techies," but have become everyday means of social interaction in our society. This interdisciplinary issue welcomes research on the impact CMTs have had in daily communication among family members and coworkers, colleagues and competitors, friends and strangers. Papers investigating how individuals communicate with one another through email, community mailing lists (listservs or USENET), instant messaging, weblogs, MUDs and MOOs, game environments, and other online venues will be considered. The issue will particularly focus on issues arising for researchers in effectively and ethically studying online communication, therefore papers dealing specifically with these "meta-research" issues, and papers suggesting particularly innovative adaptations of traditional research methods to the CMT settings are especially welcomed. We welcome submissions from researchers in a variety of areas. Any manuscripts not accepted for the special issue will be considered for the general issue of the journal. The IJC follows a policy of blind review so no author identification should appear in the body of the manuscript. Manuscripts should not exceed 25 pages and should include a title page that includes author(s) name, academic position, institutional affiliation, full address, telephone number, email address and brief author bio. An abstract of not more than 150 words should accompany the paper. All submissions must conform to the most current edition of the APA. It seeks to systematically describe the phenomenon of e-Gov interoperability and integration. It also attempts to help government practice improve current interoperability methods and modes of integrated operation. We welcome submissions that employ either quantitative or qualitative methodologies or both. For all empirical manuscripts authors must clearly and concisely describe their research methods, data or evidence, and analytical techniques, particularly for less standardized methods such as action research, case studies, and current practices reports. Following the academic tradition, all manuscripts must be grounded in prior research and scholarly literature relevant to the subjects being investigated. Manuscripts that are essentially speculative in nature, that lack a theoretical or empirical base, or that are not grounded in prior research will not be considered. Coverage: The coverage of IJEGR is international and focused on original research in electronic government applications, management, and policy. A while back I had a student who wrote her masters thesis on the use of SMS among the hearing impaired in Norway. She will have a paper in the book on texting that Rich Harper, Alex Taylor and Leysia Palen are putting together and should be out sometime soon. The actual thesis is in Norwegian but the article will be in English. She found that their freedom of movement was expanded in that they did not have to rely on place specific technologies or access to people who could eventually translate their needs into spoken language. An interesting twist, however, was that SMS made their social lives more transparent in the relatively small world of deaf persons in Oslo. Thus there were new demands on managing social interaction. To save or not to save? Preserving our Online Heritage. The preservation of contemporary networked art works presents an enormous challenge to collectors and museums, most of whom are still attempting to fit these diverse practices into their rationales and exhibition strategies. Unfortunately acquisition and conservation measures are sparse, despite the plethora of entertaining challenging and innovative online works produced over the past decade. However the is hope. Some of the leaders in preservation of internet art are not in fact art institutions, but libraries and internet archival projects, for whom collection, archiving and preservation is a routine matter. As more of their collections become digital, they have been actively addressing issues of storage, migration and emulation. This month we are joined by a panel of International experts from the archival field: Nancy McGovern, Digital Preservation Officer at Cornell University Library; Margaret Phillips, Paul Koerbin and Gerard Clifton from the PANDORA internet archive and PADI gateway at the National Library of Australia; Michele Kimpton of the Internet Archive with its consultant sage the WayBack Machine; Sharmin (Tinni) Choudhury, the software engineer for PANIC digital preservation project; Meta data standards expert Dr Simon Pockley from Deakin University; and Luciana Duranti (UBC), Yvette Hackett and Jim Suderman from InterPARES 2, Canada. Hello all, Does anyone know why some websites use very small Arial type fonts? I asked a colleague and he said it was so as to get as much information as possible on a page. Re: small fonts

Hi there...I just happened to join up as you were talking about small fonts. For what it's worth, I design websites in flash and often use pixel fonts, which show up nice and sharp in flash. Unfortunately, the pixel fonts are often 8 pt. in order to fit to the pixels correctly. It is certainly a difficult choice to make, but the pixel fonts don't blur the way other fonts might. I also notice that these small fonts show up in HTML pages and I wonder if they are not sort of attempting to look like flash sites? Kandace
