The qualified applicant will have a completed, or nearly completed, Ph.D. and be able to demonstrate potential for theory and research and for creative/technical scholarship in one or more of the following areas: 2D/3D animation; Web design; interactive cinema, television, or documentary; videogames as social networks; and/or computer mediated communication in public/community, organizational, and/or mass communication contexts including possible applications in the areas of public relations and integrated marketing communication. The qualified candidate will be able to teach theoretical and applied courses at the undergraduate and graduate level emphasizing the social, cultural, creative, educational, and technological aspects of new communication technologies. Strong candidates will be fluent in the Adobe and Macromedia suites. The Department of Communication in an intellectual community that celebrates a complex of interests and pursues a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects. Communication failures

Dear colleagues - I am hoping that members of this list might be able to help a coauthor and I. We are looking for literature on incidences of *communication failure* in internet-mediated interaction. When are interactions deemed unsuccessful, and what explanations are suggested? We are especially interested in cases involving misunderstanding by one or more participants in an interaction (one-to-one or otherwise). Where is there evidence of what Goffman called the breakdown of an encounter? Cases may include serious research involving the professions -- difficulties in successful interactions around: a virtual classroom, medically-oriented relationships [btw. patient/doctor, among docs etc.], international business transactions. Or it might focus upon collaboration more generally, reporting findings believed intrinsic to the medium or group structure. Were simply looking for troubles. Thanks in advance for this. SUBMISSION SITE http://conferences.aoir.org/index.php?cf=3 INTERNET GENERATIONS The Internet has been a rapidly evolving phenomenon, so much so that we may talk about generations of the Internet. With everything moving faster in 'Internet time,' we have arguably spanned many technological Internet generations within a single human generation: from the birth of computing to the first online communications; from the beginnings of email to the enriched worlds of chat, virtual worlds and mobile text messaging; from the workplace to home and school; from optional to all-but-mandatory; and from mainframe to desktop to laptop to mobile devices. We can also talk about contextual Internet generations, from the early pioneers who count themselves among those communicating online before the 1980s; to the early adopters of the 1980s in university and proprietary systems; to latecomers finding the need to adopt computing and technology use as part of their daily work; to the current and coming generations that will not know a time without a computer in the household, a mobile phone in their hand, and a lap- or palmtop and an MP3 player an essential part of their daily wear. This massive change in technologies, and in work and social practices suggests many avenues of interest for Internet research. CALL FOR PAPERS We call for papers from a wide perspective of disciplines, methodologies, and communities. We invite papers that address the theme of Internet Generations including TOPICS such as: - Histories of the Internet: human, social, technical, and/or cultural stories and histories - Internet use by generation, e.g., by era of technology, by children and seniors, or by age of user, etc. - Individual, group, organizational, or community use, adoption, or diffusion of the Internet and its practices - Development in use of languages, new vocabularies, social roles, rules, and etiquette - Societal impacts of and on the Internet and its evolution - Perspectives on the Internet and social change in a changing world - Internet expansion across divides, borders, nationalities, etc. - Mapping the course of Internet connectivity - Prospects for the future: Next generation Internet We invite submissions for papers, panels, and demonstrations of work on topics related to the conference theme of Internet Generations. Sessions at the conference will be established that specifically address the conference theme. We particularly call for innovative, exciting, and unexpected takes on the conference theme. We also welcome submissions on topics that address social, cultural, political, economic, and/or aesthetic aspects of the Internet beyond the conference theme. In all cases, we welcome disciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions as well as international collaborations from both AoIR and non-AoIR members. Ryerson University’s Faculty of Communication & Design invites applications and nominations for a position in the New Media Option of the School of Image Arts. This appointment is for a tenure-stream faculty position in New Media Production, commencing July 1, 2005. The School of Image Arts is a dynamic centre for creative learning, offering three distinct degree options—film, photography and new media. The program features a balance of theory and practice, fine art and commercial production. There are over 700 full-time B.F.A. students, approximately 40 full- and part-time faculty and 14 staff members. The school offers a new M.A. program in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management and contributes to the M .A. and Ph.D. program in Communication and Culture. The School is seeking an experienced educator with demonstrated teaching ability and a record of excellence in a range of scholarly, creative and/or critical activities. The position requires a strong exhibition record and professional involvement in interactive art, an extensive knowledge of hardware and software used within the areas of digital graphics and multimedia authoring with an expert knowledge of programming for interactive and sensor-based digital art production (max/VNS and/or PD and JAVA and/or C++). 'Disability, Identity, and Interdependence: ICTs and New Social Forms' Call for papers for a special Spring 2006 issue of Information, Communication & Society edited by Dr Gerard Goggin, University of Queensland, Australia Dr Christopher Newell, University of Tasmania, Australia Our ideas of identity, the body, dependence and independence, welfare, and ability are undergoing rapid transformation; new social forms are emerging in which information and communications technologies (ICTs) take a central but yet little examined role. With the growing importance of new movements - such as the disability movement, the online welfare movement, or those concerned with independent living - ICTs have become an important part of envisioning and realizing change to daily life for individuals, as well as the architecture and systems of community and society. At the present time also there are nascent associated fields of academic inquiry and policy interest, such as disability studies, theories of identity, work on social exclusion, and reconsideration of the meanings of independence. Disability, for example, poses rich, complex questions and perspectives for thinking about identity, ICTs, and society. With greater awareness of disability and the protection given to the rights of people with disability through national legislation and international instruments, increasing attention is being given to researching and understanding the social implications of technology and disability. As governments and regulators enact new requirements for accessible technology, corporations and the 'third' sector are also grappling with how to incorporate disability and accessibility in their visions of ICTs. At stake in these developments are important questions about identity and ICTs. Concepts of welfare have been much debated, especially under pressure from global economic and political trends. ICTs now play an indispensable role in social and political organisation online around welfare issues, in state and private administration of welfare, in processes of identity-formation concerning welfare. While independent living is still to be achieved for many, there is now growing recognition of the balance between dependence and independence - and that all in society are engaged in understanding their interdependence and connectedness, something in which ICTs are offering innovative ways to understand such new social forms. In this light, we welcome submissions on topics such as (but not restricted to): * how thinking about disability, identity, and interdependence opens up new perspectives on understanding ICTs * case studies of particular technologies, accessibility, & disability * the implications of disability for ICT policy and design * new conceptions of welfare, online welfare movements and ICTs * independent living and ICTs * what are the implications of ICTs for the lives of people with a diverse range of disabilities and impairments, identities, and lives?
