Wall Street Journal -- "digitally tone deaf"?

I thought this article might be of interest to many on this list. I've thought about similar issues with regards to academic journals. That is, if the reference is not available online, how likely are people to make the effort to go to the library and make a copy? Do citations decline? Many American Psychological Association articles are not available online. And for ones that are, it has only been in the last year that even UC Berkeley provided access for students. Now, if you're Psych Review or the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (the field's top journals), maybe you can get away with this, but for how long? At least with those pubs you can find the citations, if not the full text. Evidently not necessarily true for WSJ. - Jennifer ---------- Whither The Wall Street Journal? By Adam L. As importantly, the next generation of readers is growing up by accessing news over the internet, and one place they are not surfing to is WSJ.com. This cohort will include the three visiting positions advertised here as well as fellows selected from among USC faculty and graduate students. The visiting fellows will be expected to pursue their research in residence at the Annenberg Center during the 2005-06 academic year. They will collectively be responsible for organizing one conference and a monthly speaker series and will be expected to attend and organize a weekly seminar of graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty fellows on the theme of Networked Publics. They may not hold any other appointment during the period of the fellowship. The postdoctoral fellowship is intended for scholars who have completed their Ph.D within five years of August 2005. It carries a stipend of $40,000 in addition to a limited amount of funds to support research and relocation expenses. if anything, "social software" needs to find a better/more descriptive name for itself. generally, it seems to describe a fairly tightly constrained/circumscribed subset of the available socia[b]l[e] media. were i to submit a paper on some aspect of IRC, a *very* sociable (and fairly popular) software medium, would it likely be rejected? it is hard to tell from the text of this announcement. Hi all I'm new on the list, so I apologize if this topic is "out of bounds". I'm interested in research on media production in general and more specifically web production/web development. What I'm looking for is "behind the scenes" research. The main question is: "How is the form and content of large-scale web sites affected by the production milieu in which they are created". I understand "production milieu" very broadly at the moment, meaning for example: - the production organization (who does what, when, how and why) - laws and regulations - company policies - technology, and technological development... ... and so forth.
