Current demographics of online journalists

Hello. I've exhausted all my scholarly and professional resources searching for this one over the past month or two, but perhaps someone on this list can help me. I am attempting to find current numbers of people working specifically in online newsrooms (the "traditional" kind that have offline counterparts, though if Salon were included, I'd take it) and how they are divided by gender and race. I have checked with all the usual suspects -- ONA, ASNE, Pew, API, AOIR archives, Weaver/Wilhoit/Voakes studies, comm abstracts and mass comm. scholarly journals, human resource directors...). If anyone has this information or a link to a good recent study that contains it, would you please email it to me at sthiel1(a)depaul.edu? Dear Air'ers, I am looking for the literatures dealt with "disadvantage" of using the Internet, computer technology, webpages, or blogs. I know it might be a sort of embarrasing topic. I prefer the micro-level or psychological aspects (annoyance, time sink, harm, and the like) to the macro-level or social aspects such as privacy, anonymity, and participation. You and i Do BYLINE: By JOHN SCHWARTZ BODY: SOMETHING will be missing when Joseph Turow's book about families and the Internet is published by M.I.T. Press next spring: The capital I that usually begins the word "Internet." Mr. Turow, a professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, studies how people use online technology and how that affects their lives. He has begun a small crusade to de-capitalize Internet -- and, by extension, to acknowledge a deep shift in the way that we think about the online world. "I think what it means is it's part of the everyday universe," he said. Capitalization irked him because, he said, it seemed to imply that reaching into the vast, interconnected ether was a brand-name experience. "The capitalization of things seems to place an inordinate, almost private emphasis on something," he said, turning it into a Kleenex or a Frigidaire. "The Internet, at least philosophically, should not be owned by anyone," he said, calling it "part of the neural universe of life." But, he said, dropping the big I would sent a deeper message to the world: The revolution is over, and the Net won. It's part of everyone's life, and as common as air and water (neither of which starts with a capital). Some elements of the online world have already made the transition. Internet often appears with a lowercase I on the Internet itself -- but then, spelling online is dreadful, u kno. Although most everybody still capitalizes World Wide Web, words like "website," and the online journals known as weblogs (or, simply, blogs) are increasingly lowercase. Of course, the Internet's capital I is virtually engraved in stone, since Microsoft Word automatically capitalizes the lowercase "i" unless a user overrides its settings. For Mr. Turow, the first step in his campaign was persuading his book editor to enlist. She compromised, dropping to lowercase in newly written parts and retaining the capital in older articles reproduced in the book. Then he nudged Steven Jones, a communications professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and president of the Association of Internet Researchers. Mr. Jones was cool to the idea, until he looked at copies of Scientific American from the late 19th century, and noticed that words for new technologies, like Phonograph, were often uppercased. Today, Mr. Jones is a crusader himself. "I think the moment is right," he said, to treat the Internet "the way we refer to television, radio and the telephone." He shared his view with a few hundred close friends last month at a meeting of the National Communication Association, an educators' group. "I just noticed everybody's attention kind of snapped forward," he said. "I'm used to having people say nice things," he said. "We're scholars, not wrestlers. But this time I was struck by the number of people who were saying the equivalent of, 'Right on!' " DICTIONARY editors, though, have dismissed Mr. Turow politely but firmly. Dictionaries do not generally see themselves as making the rules, said Jesse Sheidlower, who runs the American offices of the Oxford English Dictionary. "What dictionaries do is reflect what's out there," he said. He and his fellow dictionary editors would think seriously about such changes after newspapers make them, he added. That could take a while. Allan M. Siegal, a co-author of The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage and an assistant managing editor at the newspaper, said that "there is some virtue in the theory" that Internet is becoming a generic term, "and it would not be surprising to see the lowercase usage eclipse the uppercase within a few years." He said, however, that the newspaper was unlikely to make any change that was not supported by authoritative dictionaries. Time to ask Robert Kahn, who is as responsible as anyone for the creation of the Internet, having helped plan the original network that preceded it and having created, with Vinton Cerf, the language of computer networks, known as TCP/IP, that allowed the vast knitting-together of systems that gave birth to the modern medium. He cares deeply about the name, having led a fight for years to ensure that its use is not restricted or abused by the corporation that received the trademark in 1989. A settlement was reached two years ago with the company now known as Concord EFS. The company agreed that it would not dun people who used the word, which meant that "Internet" now belongs to everybody, Mr. Kahn said. "We defended the right of people to use the word 'Internet' for what we think of as the Internet," he said. THAT was the important fight, according to Mr. Kahn. "Whether you use a cap I or little I" hardly matters, he said. Which leads us back to a profound question for Mr. Turow: Don't you have anything better to do? "That's a really interesting question," he said. "I was an English major. I'm very sensitive to the nuances of words, and I'm very concerned about the nuances, the feel that words have within the society." Fair enough; Perhaps the next big thing, after all, will be small. 'Disability, Identity, and Interdependence: ICTs and New Social Forms' A call for papers for a special Spring 2006 issue of Information, Communication & Society edited by Dr Gerard Goggin, University of Queensland, Australia Dr Christopher Newell, University of Tasmania, Australia Our ideas of identity, the body, dependence and independence, welfare, and ability are undergoing rapid transformation; new social forms are emerging in which information and communications technologies (ICTs) take a central but yet little examined role. With the growing importance of new movements - such as the disability movement, the online welfare movement, or those concerned with independent living - ICTs have become an important part of envisioning and realizing change to daily life for individuals, as well as the architecture and systems of community and society. At the present time also there are nascent associated fields of academic inquiry and policy interest, such as disability studies, theories of identity, work on social exclusion, and reconsideration of the meanings of independence. Disability, for example, poses rich, complex questions and perspectives for thinking about identity, ICTs, and society. With greater awareness of disability and the protection given to the rights of people with disability through national legislation and international instruments, increasing attention is being given to researching and understanding the social implications of technology and disability. As governments and regulators enact new requirements for accessible technology, corporations and the 'third' sector are also grappling with how to incorporate disability and accessibility in their visions of ICTs. At stake in these developments are important questions about identity and ICTs. Concepts of welfare have been much debated, especially under pressure from global economic and political trends. ICTs now play an indispensable role in social and political organisation online around welfare issues, in state and private administration of welfare, in processes of identity-formation concerning welfare. While independent living is still to be achieved for many, there is now growing recognition of the balance between dependence and independence - and that all in society are engaged in understanding their interdependence and connectedness, something in which ICTs are offering innovative ways to understand such new social forms. In this light, we welcome submissions on topics such as (but not restricted to): * how thinking about disability, identity, and interdependence opens up new perspectives on understanding ICTs * case studies of particular technologies, accessibility, & disability * the implications of disability for ICT policy and design * new conceptions of welfare, online welfare movements and ICTs * independent living and ICTs * what are the implications of ICTs for the lives of people with a diverse range of disabilities and impairments, identities, and lives? 'Silicon Snake Oil' is correct - I'd be interested in seeing if Stoll is still of the same opinion. It was a real departure from his prior work (Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage), and reads more like Nicholson Baker's 'Doublefold' - a raging and not always accurate opinion piece full of bias. There's no question that I myself am biased in making this comment, because he took out after librarians in one chapter. It is not a scholarly work, though it is worth reading, given his arpanet background. You might want to check out his 1999 book, 'High-Tech Heretic: Why Computers Don't Belong in the Classroom and Other Reflections by a Computer Contrarian', as well (again, I was not impressed, but then we know about my own bias). He has apparently continued to criticise the internet, because a cursory amazon search shows a 2002 title, 'Logout', which I've never heard of. He's been cited tons, so it might help to look at ISI. Amy Goodman can make you think again. Amy Goodman is the reporter who faced the Indonesian military in East Timor in 1991 armed only with a microphone. She placed herself in harm's way hoping to help the brave civilians who were marching against the military and to tell their story to the world. The Indonesian military had a reputation for killing Australian journalists. Almost the first question they asked when they attacked her was "Australian?" "They had stripped us of our possessions, but I still had my passport. I threw it at them. When I regained my breath I said again 'We're from America! America!' "Finally the soldiers lowered their guns from our heads. We think it was because we were from the same country their weapons were from. They would have to pay a price for killing us that they never had to pay for killing Timorese." Her coverage of repression across the globe has been a dangerous battle to bring the truth to the public, hindered rather than helped by the corporate media. Imagine for example putting her coverage of Chevron's blatant support for vicious repression in Nigeria alongside adverts for Chevron! Amy Goodman and her brother have pioneered independent media in the United States. The hour-long TV program produced in New York and available over the internet at http://democracynow.org is a daily indictment of the war and the attack on civil liberties in the US and worldwide. It is surprising to watch as it has the format of a news program like any other but deliberately includes all the voices which the corporate media excludes. That includes voices like that of Rita Lasar who lost her brother in the terrorist attack on the twin towers, a few blocks from the studios where<em> Democracy Now!</em> is broadcast. Rita's brother stayed in the building because he would not leave his quadraplegic friend behind. On September 14th Bush used his name and his story in his speech at the National Cathedral in Washington. "Rita quickly understood how her brother's gentle heroism was being used. She wrote a letter that appeared in the New York Times on September 18th 2001. "It is in my brother's name and mine that I pray that we, this country that has been so deeply hurt, do not do something which will unleash forces we will not have the power to call back." and of the fireman who lost four of his squad "As a rescue worker I can't say: we lost so let's kill six thousand more." It is no accident that when the Democrat witch-hunt against Nader was at its height, when Michael Moore and Naomi Klein had crossed the picket line and supported Kerry, Democracy Now! Interviewed Nader and enabled him to expose the dirty tricks and the lies being used against his campaign. Her book "The Exception to the Rulers" is a withering and closely argued indictment of "Oily Politicians, War Profiteers and the Media that loves them." If you want chapter and verse on the links between Big Business and the Bush administration; between the corporations and corrupt totalitarian regimes around the world and all of them with the media in the US: this is the book to read. One example of the power of independent media among the many in the book is the battle of Seattle in 1999 - "My colleagues and I from <em>Democracy Now!</em> Spent long hours in the streets with journalists from the independent media centre, being gassed and harassed by police dressed in black futuristic body armour as we attempted to report what was happening to the world. "While the networks were quoting the police saying that they were not using rubber bullets, independent media reporters were uploading minute-by-minute images as we all picked up the bullets off the street by the handful." In advocating independent media, Amy Goodman does not ask to be admired. She asks to be emulated. You can get your local library to get a copy.
