Of these I think Reid and Reid http://www.160characters.org/documents/SocialEffectsOfTextMessaging.pdf is the one which interests me most. The different attitudes of those who prefer to text to those who prefer talk are explored. Some are a bit obvious but it opens up a very interesting field of non-trivial study in this area. The extent to which texting and Yahoo/MSN/ICQ messaging has replaced and complemented the face to face discourse of pupils in Secondary School in the UK is phenomenal. There is also an issue raised in discussion between teachers of bullying using text and some research on this would be interesting and useful. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. This ground-breaking conference will bring together policymakers, lawyers, technologists, social activists, and academics to discuss globalization and the law in terms of information flow. Patterns of information flow are one of the most important factors shaping globalization. Today, all sorts of entities -- individuals, groups, countries, and international organizations -- are trying to promote and control the flow across national borders of different kinds of information, including intellectual property, scientific research, political discourse, brand names, and cultural symbols. Ever-proliferating digitally networked environments subject information to yet new methods of distribution and manipulation. Control and influence of information flow will help define who holds power in the global information economy. This conference will explore these patterns of information flow and their political, economic, social, and cultural consequences. We will explore four key questions: * Can the flow of information across borders be controlled? If so, how? * Whose interests will be affected by flows of information across borders? NEW BOOK ON WEBSITE ARCHIVING Archiving Websites. General Considerations and Strategies by Niels Brügger 76 pages Cover text "This book treats the micro archiving of websites, i.e. archiving by researchers, students or others without special technical knowledge who, using a standard computer, wish to save a website for further study. The phenomenon is discussed from the standpoint that Internet research must be able to stabilise and save the object of its analysis. However, the Internet is endowed with certain fundamental media-specific dynamics that make stabilisation difficult. Based on an account and discussion of these dynamics (linked as they are to sender, text and recipient) the following double conclusion is reached. Firstly, unlike other well-known media, the Internet does not simply exist in a form suited to being archived, but rather is first formed as an object of study in the archiving, and it is formed differently depending on who does the archiving, when, and for what purpose. Secondly, this means that there is an element of subjective creation in the archived material, so that methodical deliberations are necessary — in other words, the answers to why and how the archived material has been created. These conclusions form the starting point for the last section of the book, which, based on comprehensive tests of archiving software, discusses in depth the elements that can be included in an archiving strategy."
