I agree with several earlier comments (e.g. any location will be a problem for some, a balance is probably the best approach). Curiously, no one has mentioned that Canada has similarly restrictive policies to the US when it comes to visas concerning visitors from numerous countries. My most denigrating and logistically nightmarish embassy experience was at the Canadian Embassy in NYC (far surpassed my experiences at three US embassies worldwide). As for Maria's comment about Budapest: "Certainly, adopting Hungarian as the working language is out of the question." How unambitious of you! While I am certainly not a fan of the current U.S. alien identification procedures, some of this discussion is becoming a bit hysterical. Mexican and Canadian travellers are not fingerprinted due to provisions of NAFTA. I assure you that if the Department of Homeland Security could fingerprint Mexican and Canadian travellers without re-negotiating the treaty, it would. (For that matter, if DHS could fingerprint domestic travellers without a popular uprising, it undoubtedly would. It is quietly working toward that end, beginning with a "trusted traveller" program to induce "voluntary" biometric recordation.) I would also be perfectly happy to see the conference held outside the U.S. again. Montreal and Vancouver come to mind. Budapest is nice, too. Dan L. While I am not unsympathetic to the problems that international visitors face going to the USA for conferences, I think that we have to remember that no matter where the location - some people will have problems with attending - for whatever reason. Conferences outside of North America run very expensive for me as a Canadian. While I have been fortunate to have funding to attend, grants do run out. The trip to Sussex was very expensive as a Canadian graduate student. The exchange rate is ridiculous (2.38 CDN = 1 GBP). Other factors include time spent away from our work, as it is no short jaunt to Europe. Most of teach, and it's difficult to get away for conferences when they are a big distance away. I am not sure that I will be able to attend many more conferences outside of N.A. It seems to me that if we alternate between US, Canada and International countries, attendees will also be alternating their attendance. I don't think we can help that. I think it would be a bigger problem if we only held the conference in the US. Yes, we can consider the location of AoIR members, but if we want to expand membership (especially to academics outside of North America), then we need to alternate locations. If we are indeed the Internet gurus and geeks of this generation, than perhaps we can consider alternatives, such as web conferencing/presenting for those people unable to attend for whatever reason. Dear Colleagues, I think we are validating the premise of the digital divide in this discussion about the visa to the US requirement. After all, if any other country on the planet started restricting entry at its borders, we probably would not consider it as an option this time around. I really like to think that the current visa problems are just that: problems that will be resolved in a near future. At the same time, we are riding the Internet wave and it maybe challenging for a fledgling organization such as ours to sustain our conferences unless they are profitable, right? Poor infrastructure in some countries and perhaps political climate in others (Im thinking about visas for the U.S. here) are always going to be variables for us to consider. Not to lose the balance between the two, I think I am ready to vote for Budapest. My department is hiring: JOB DESCRIPTION The School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) at the University of California-Berkeley invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant, associate, or full professor level beginning in fall 2005. Preference will be given to applicants within 12 years of the PhD. Applicants should have received, or be about to receive, a doctoral degree in the Behavioral Sciences, the Social Sciences, Computer Science, Library and Information Science, Business/Management, or a related disciplinary or professional area. SIMS is an interdisciplinary faculty with a shared commitment to addressing issues related to information policy and ethics, the design of new genres of information and media, and the relationships among information and information systems and individuals, organizations, and society. Candidates should possess appropriate expertise and demonstrated research excellence and be prepared to work in a multidisciplinary setting. Relevant professional experience is also desirable. Hi, The cities I mentioned as possible conference venues are just examples. Of course Budapest is a nice city and I am pretty sure that Chicago is one too. My point is, that we should start including other, in many respects marginalized, regions of the world in the diverse discourses about the internet. And having a conference in an, e.g., non-English speaking country of the South would signal that research from outside Europe and Northamerica is welcomed and recognised. As internet usage shifts from Northamerica and Western Europe to Asia and Latin America, researchers need to establish and renew networks and bonds to these regions. JoCI is a peer-reviewed Open Archive on-line quarterly journal for and by the Community Informatics research community and produced under the auspices of the Community Informatics Research Network (CIRN) http://www.ci-research.net This Inaugural Issue of JoCI is an invitational response by members of the Editorial Group to give a context to our enterprise through position papers, scholarly papers and other materials. The issue includes: An introduction (in part through video) to the work of K-Net, an aboriginal group in Northern Canada which is innovating in the use of ICT for education, for administration, for health and perhaps most importantly, is demonstrating the way in which ICT truly can enable AND empower communities to move beyond traditional barriers and impediments to find a new and more equitable role in the Information Society.
