popular culture and Internet practices

Hello, I've been browsing this list for some time but haven't posted. I admire the work of a number of people on the list and am happy to see it running. I've been thinking lately about the relations between popular culture and internet practices. In particular, I'm interested in how youth draw on widely circulating (more global) texts while simultaneously being involved in producing these texts in, sometimes, surprisingly new ways. This interest especially came up with one youth I've been researching who is involved in building a new online game with others from different countries. I keep thinking about the different popular cultural texts he is drawing on, while he is also an active producer of culture. Anyway, I'm wondering if others on this list could point me in the direction of work that considers forms of activity of consuming and (re)producing popular culture with digital practices. Residential mobility and technology use

Hello, I am a graduate student in HCI at Carnegie Mellon University and am starting my dissertation on the topic of residential mobility as a natural experiment on the health of social ties (how people use/don't use technology for keeping in touch and creating new relationships and whether they are successful). I am specifically interested in migration within country, not international migration. I was wondering if anyone knows of any similar work (quantitative or qualitative). Also, I am curious if anyone knows of any ethnographies of the process of contemporary residential mobility within countries. Thank you!! One of the things that has both amused and annoyed me in the past 2 months is that there has been humongously more discussion on this list about all the services that someone should provide -- for free and without any effort by the person sending the message -- and hardly any discussion of real research. I'm basically going to stop reading this list until it gets back to its purpose. This is the Association of Internet RESEARCHERS, after all. Given the very uneven quality of the papers I've heard at AoIR conferences, I would urge that efforts be turned towards doing good research. Not a great deal is known for sure. The Indymedia site has the best source of details - emails from the web hosting company in London. As far as we know, the UK government allowed the US authorities to seize the HDDs (under an agreement they made a few years ago to give the liberty of British subjects to the US authorities. Indymedia under attack

http://solidarity.indymedia.org.uk/ Indymedia is a global media network that provides open space to publish challenging, independent reporting, with emphasis on political and social justice issues. The Indymedia network is based upon principled mutual aid and voluntary participation, maintaining openly accessible newswires with the capacity for anyone to publish texts, images, audio, and video. On 7 October, 2004, hard drives from two Indymedia servers were seized from the London office of a US-owned web hosting company, Rackspace, at the request of the US Justice Department, apparently in collaboration with Italian and Swiss authorities. The seizure of the hard drives in London shut down an Indymedia radio station and around 20 different Indymedia websites including those serving Ambazonia, Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Western Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles, Marseille, Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Liege, East and West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen, Belgrade, Portugal, Prague, Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, and parts of Germany Indymedia. Although the hard drives were returned on October 13, the particular legal framework under which the seizures took place is unknown. One week after the seizures there is still an almost total information blackout from the authorities in the UK, US, Switzerland and Italy. Indymedia still has no confirmation of who ordered the seizures, who took the hard drives, why the seizures took place, or whether it will happen again. In response, people all over the world have endorsed the following Declaration: We, the Undersigned, Denounce the seizure of the Indymedia hard drives as an unacceptable attack on press freedom, free speech and privacy; Condemn this action as a violation of communication rights, as expressed in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: "Everyone has the right to the freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." Voice concern over the growing use of international cooperation frameworks by governments and law enforcement agencies to obscure clear legal process, undermine civil liberties, and erode communication rights. Against the seizure of the Indymedia servers and the attempt to impose silence: We request a full disclosure of the names of organizations and individuals involved in the seizure, a copy of the subpoena, and an investigation into the legality of the action by an independent party; We insist that all copies of the seized data be deleted or returned to Indymedia, and that Indymedia be provided with a list of organizations and individuals who have had access to the data held on the hard drives as a result of the seizure; We call for openness and clarity in international cooperation agreements, and that these agreements ensure due process, protect privacy and free speech, and respect communication rights; We demand that the responsible parties be held accountable TO BE DELIVERED TO: The Rt Hon David Blunkett, MP (UK); Attorney General John Ashcroft (USA); The Director of the FBI; The US Department of State; Appropriate officials in the government of Italy; Appropriate officials in the government of Switzerland. I hope you'll pardon the shameless self-promotion. I've got a piece you might like which critiques the notion of civil society online as an ethnocentric model of politics. It doesn't address cosmopolitanism, but it does examine the models of spatiality and representation that make civil society an ethnocentric notion. from my limited experience with scattered conferences in the last 2-3 years, it is up to the individual organization to devise the policy best suited to its need: American Political Science Association: Papers are available online to members, whether they have attended the conference or not, and are not available to non-members who atended the conference. I've not attended a conference yet, so i don't know if they sell physical copies there. Canadian Political Science Association: Only some papers are available online, it may be (i am not sure) that only papers submitted a week or two prior to the conference are made available. Hard copies are sold (if the presenters voluntarily submit them, and many don't) for, i think, 2$ Can. each, proceeds going to covering conference costs . Popular Culture Association / American Culture Association: No online papers, hard copies sold in the same way as CPSA above The Canadian associations for psychology and for comminaction (can't remember the official names off hand) do not have hard copy papers at all, don't know about online availability. One interesting thing the Popular Culture Association / American Culture Association does is post the emails of all participants in the conference program. That way, if you've attended the conference and therefore have the program, you can just email presenters and ask for their papers, at very little additional effort to you or to your association; this may also be done through an online list of participants, i assume. but here is another question related to this issue that jumps into my mind: as far as i know, in fiction writing (at least up to 4-5 years ago), if you post a story you've written online, even if it is only your home page, it is legally considered to be published. That means it is copyrighted; but it also means any publication of that story in a journal or anthology would legally be a reprint, which most publishers and journals are reluctant to do. This is not a legal issue. The question of "publication" is irrelevant for most copyright purposes. Publication is no longer a criterion for obtaining copyright in the United States (or other Berne signatory nations) and hasn't been since the late 1980s. Copyright attaches to the article as soon as it is fixed in a tangible medium of expression, whether or not it is ever "published." "Reprint" is not a legal or statutory status. "Publication" can affect the duration of copyright in certain circumstances, or affect some choice of law questions, but those matters aren't at issue here. There may be customs of trade in certain disciplines, or a variety of business reasons, as to why a traditional "publisher" would be reluctant to issue an article that has previously been available in an electronic archive, but that has nothing to do with copyright.
