Picking up a parallel thread to exploring computer history - I have been incensed, if I might put it in those terms, at the lack of interest in most communications research programs on the general topic of communications history. Indeed, the lack of understanding on these issues by my students is so profound that I find it almost impossible, or at least improbable to move forward on others issues. I would generalize that the understanding of history in general is becoming erratic, a factor that plays into various know-nothing political stances these days. For instructors like myself who have very little say in what courses are taught in the departments with which I am affiliated, this great lack of understanding on both the faculty as well as the students I think presents a great theoretical hole in not only Internet Studies, but in communication research in general. (I am doing a little study on this right now, not that I know where such research might be welcome). I am teaching a course on 'computer mediated communication' right now, with over half the class consisting of graduate students in communication. Now I wanted to contextualize the development of the computer into the larger developments of comm history. Indeed, I like to think about the question as to whether the development of the Internet and CMC during the later 20th century was 'revolutionary' or 'evolutionary' or what. I want to make sure that we wouldn't be too quick to jump on techno-determinist or cultural-determinist ideological camps, and to see how the impact of new media can reflect, play into, and influence contemporary techno-communicational developments. Ok. Computers in 1968, Barry? I asked my students when Gutenberg developed his revolutionary iteration of the printing press - and not only could not a single student tell me within a 100 years, but the answers were simply astonishing (1700!). Dates of the larger developments in comm history, even from a Euro-centric perspective were not forthcoming. What little comm history they did know was related to mass media (there were some grunts of acknowledgement when I asked about the penny press, but not much understanding when I mentioned the telegraph as the beginning of the global, electronic, network society). The same was true as I talked about the history of the discipline itself: Paul Lazersfeld, who's he? Indeed, not one of my students had heard of Marshall McLuhan (and how could they in a traditional media course?). My course on CMC, which I had planned as only exploring the state of the field since 9/11 and the dot.com bust is now spending a lot more time setting up an understanding of the media world even before Turing, von Neuman, etc. Indeed more contemporary historical awareness - for example, the complete lack of awareness bout the existence or promise of the Whole Earth Catalog - can be so lacking that a question about the inter-relation of the WECatalog, the California Ideology, the Sharing economies, and the rise of the WEB invite confusion. However, I don't see resources out there to address this problem. Sigh. Since early in AoIR's short life, there have been questions about when, how, and whether we should launch a journal of our own. AoIR does not have a journal of its own. Most professional associations publish one or more journals. Since May 2004 an online working group composed by AoIR members has discussed thoughtful considerations of the issues upon which the AoIR executive committee will base a decision. Specifically, the group has: 1) identified existing journals that publish internet research; 2) Identified the possibilities for AoIR; 3) For each possibility the group has identified the advantages and disadvantages. In Sussex we will talk more about the "AoIR journal": - Sunday after lunch @ the BoF session - On Monday afternoon, during the AoIR General Meeting. You might find some useful raw materials at http://www.stanford.edu/group/itsp/ and you could mine the links at http://vmoc.museophile.org/ - The Virtual Museum of Computing. The Charles Babbage Institute seems to have a lot of the original documentation http://www.cbi.umn.edu/ http://www.computerhistory.org/ is the site of the Computer Museum at Mountainview California which has some timelines etc of its own. For an entertaining (but probably biased) read that could be usefully critiqued in a serious discussion of the origins of the personal computer, you might want to look at Cringely, R. X. (1996) Accidental Empires : How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition, and Still Can't Get a Date, (Rev. 2nd) Penguin, London. It was used by the Open University for their first year course when I taught it in 2000. We have also updated the designs on shirts, mugs, notebooks, and other swell merchandise at http://cafepress.org/aoir I look forward to seeing many of you in Sussex. 2.2 Vice President (Allen) 2.2.1 I have been working with Radhika on reviewing progress so far on the journal; have provided a little advice to Sheizaf and Monica on conference matters; have judged the Student Prize for the conference; and been networking to increase interest in AoIR downunder. 2.3 Secretary (Bunz) 2.3.1 In the last few months I've mostly been looking up things in the archives for our exec discussions and played late-night email tag with Jeremy. More recently I've provided tutorials on air-l, ordered various awards plaques, got the AoIR records folder in shape, and am about to begin creating the agendas for the General Meeting and the various exec meetings that will take place in Sussex. I've also been adding my two cents to discussions on the exec. Summary of What's been happening on the Executive Listserve since May 11, 2004: - Future Conferences: We are in the process of planning long term. A) As reported in the previous reports, we will switch to an external conference management team (Virginia Tech) starting with the 2005 conference. Thus, from then on we will need only a local liaison rather than a local organizer/host. We will also be able to predict costs better and lots of exec time is freed up for other things. B) The local liaison and the newly selected program chair for 2005 (location to be announced in Sussex) have been working away on the Call for Papers under what looks to be an outstanding conference theme. We are hoping to release the CfP at the Sussex conference. The local liaison has also been reporting that work with the Virginia Tech conference management team has begun, such as checking out hotels, etc., so we are ahead of the game for 2005. C) We are also in the process of setting up locations for the conferences in 2006 and 2007 (both still tentative, but were talking to local liaisons). D) After a rather animated discussion we are coming to an agreement about a general rotation schedule for conferences beyond 2005/6/7 up until 2015 (rotating North America, Europe, Asia, Other locations; at this point, cities have not been decided on that far into the future). - Conference Coordinating Committee: We continued our discussion on a conference coordinating committee (CCC). This year, we used a one-year trial conference management group, composed of three exec members, the local host, and the program chair and such coordination seemed to facilitate the process. We are still discussing the specific makeup of this committee in future years - Virtual Move: Jeremy has been moving our electronic organizational components (e.g., website, Listserve) onto a commercial server (Dreamhost by majority air-exec vote). This will free up much of his time (as basic technological maintenance issues will no longer have to be performed by him). It also makes us location independent, provides added security, and facilitates designated AoIR members access to any files. Should Jeremy ever resign his AoIR position, the electronic transition will facilitate the human transition process. Costs incurred by this electronic, virtual move are minimal compared to the man-hours that Jeremy otherwise has to put in every month. - Diverse Conference Issues: We talked about various conference issues as they came up, such as graduate student paper submissions, computer access, financial assistance (sorry, were not yet able to do that, but hope to be able soon), conference fees, location of conference dinner, financials, registration website testing, online program, session presentation guidelines. - Impact: The association has been included in the directory of quality internet resources based in the UK. If you see us listed anywhere else, please email any exec member. 2.4 Treasurer (Bates) 2.4.1. Ben has been managing memberships. 2.5 Open Seats (Gajjala, Markham) 2.5.1 Gajjala: I have been monitoring the discussion on the Aoir journal topic, reviewed papers for AOIR and participated in the decision making process regarding grad student top papers. 2.5.2 Markham: Annette Markham has been communicating with various AOIR members about relevant issues to bring to the table, particularly about research methodologies. She has also joined the working group on the issue of AOIR journals. The qualitative research list is up and running and awaiting more members. I did not leave the Internet during my vacations , getting more and more addicted :-) - this is definitively related to getting more and more addicted to AoIR as well :-)! Also, I did actively participated to all the discussion and decisions within the air-exec (see Ulla's report) , particularly regarding the future conferences planning . I am working on a survey to learn more from conference participants, and you will hear more about it at the conference in Sussex and online; now organizing... 2.6.2 Kluver: I participated in Exec Council conversations and the journal working group. 2.7 Student Seat (Tkach-Kawaski) 2.7.1 The graduate representative has been somewhat quiet over the summer (while on maternity leave) but is gearing up for the fall and winter. She has been collecting information regarding graduate courses throughout the world aimed at Internet-re- lated studies with an eye to making this info available on the aoir web-site. Any and all submissions in this vein are welcome at tkach(a)japan.email.ne.jp. 2.8 Publications Officers (Hunsinger, Breindahl) 2.8.1 Hunsinger: well, I've been busy, but it is too much to list in the end. it basically breaks down into stuff for the conference, stuff for future conferences, stuff for the systems, stuff for exec, and other stuff related to aoir. 2.8.2 Breindahl: I have moderated the listserv and worked with Jeremy on technical issues. 2.9 Past-President (Jones): Most of my work has been related to planning for the 2005 conference, coordinating with the conference planning agency, and venue, and to long-term conference planning. An important example is open source. Our data from human subjects show that non-modular payoff structure drives the convergence to a Nash equilibrium, in which commission price to helpers converge to zero but helpers will not stop solving problems for others. By non-modularity, we mean that the total production (or payoff) of a team is zero if either one of its members fails to produce at least at a certain level. In the experiment, subjects produce by solving a variant of a popular board game called MASTERMIND. Theoretically, free-riding leads to zero commission price. This removes a signaling function of price for the difficulty levels of work remaining. Empirically, however, it is not sufficient to cause the catastrophic outcome of zero payoff. Previous research on these ventures has primarily looked at the design of business models, yet has neglected other key questions relating to the management of these firms, despite clear indications that some existing insights on venture management cannot be applied to new ventures in OSS. The purpose of this paper is to explore how three key challenges of venture management - the liabilities of newness and smallness of start-ups and market entry barriers - affect new ventures in OSS. Based on empirical data from personal interviews and a large scale survey we find that many of the liabilities that are typically discussed in the entrepreneurship literature are much less of a challenge for new ventures in OSS. In this paper we investigate the dynamics of Wikipedia, a prominent, thriving wiki. We make three contributions. First, we introduce a new exploratory data analysis tool, the history flow visualization, which is effective in revealing patterns within the wiki context and which we believe will be useful in other collaborative situations as well. Second, we discuss several collaboration patterns highlighted by this visualization tool and corroborate them with statistical analysis. In this paper, we show how information available in CVS repositories can be used to study the structure of the modules in a project when they are related by the people working in them, and how techniques taken from the social networks fields can be used to highlight the characteristics of that structure. As a case example, we also show some results of applying this methodology to the Apache project in several points in time. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of that information renders it almost unusable without applying methodologies which highlight the relevant information for a given aspect of the project. In this paper, we propose the use of a well known set of methodologies (social network analysis) for characterizing libre software projects, their evolution over time and their internal structure. Specially when we move apart from systems-programming and enter the realm of end-user applications, we find source files with documentation, interface specifications, internationalization and localization modules, multimedia files, etc. All of them are source code in the sense that the developer works directly with them, and the application is built automatically using them as input. This paper discusses the relationship between 'classical' source code (usually written in a programming language) and these other files by analyzing a publicly-available software versioning repository. Ghosh Title: GlueTheos: Automating the Retrieval and Analysis of Data from Publicly Available Software Repositories httP://opensource.mit.ed/papers/robles-barahona-ghosh_gluetheos.pdf Abstract: For efficient, large scale data mining of publicly available information about libre (free, open source) software projects, automating the retrieval and analysis processes is a must. A system implementing such automation must have into account the many kinds of repositories with interesting information (each with its own structure and access methods), and the many kinds of analysis which can be applied to the retrieved data. In addition, such a system should be capable of interfacing and reusing as much existing software for both retrieving and analyzing data as possible. In this paper we show its structure, how it can be used, and how it can be extended. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Updated paper 1 Authors: Stewart, Katherine J & Sanjay Gosain Title: The Impact of Ideology on Effectiveness in Open Source Software Development Teams http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/stewartgosain.pdf Abstract The emerging work on understanding open source software has argued for the importance of understanding what leads to effectiveness in OSS development teams and has pointed to the importance of ideology. This paper develops a framework of the OSS ideology (including specific norms, beliefs, and values) and a theoretical model to show how adherence to components of the ideology impact effectiveness in OSS teams. The model is based on the idea that ideology provides clan control, which is important in OSS development settings because OSS teams generally lack formal behavioral and outcome controls. The paper hypothesizes both direct effects of ideology on OSS team effectiveness and indirect effects via influences on affective trust, cognitive trust, and communication quality. Hypotheses are tested using survey and objective data on OSS projects. Four effectiveness measures are used to capture unique aspects of effectiveness in OSS including both the extent to which a team attrac ts input from the community and the team's success in accomplishing project outcomes. Results support the main thesis that OSS team members' adherence to the tenets of the OSS community ideology enhances OSS team effectiveness. The study uncovers several differences in the importance of OSS norms, beliefs, and values to different kinds of OSS team effectiveness and discusses implications for theory and practice

The abstract has to be written in English language. An additional German language version is appreciated, if possible. Authors may present in English or German. Authors will receive notification of acceptance by: end of November 2004.
