e-science, the grid, and supercomputers

NSF funded a number of initiatives that may be called e-science under the KDI (Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence) initiative. I have been part of one of those grants looking primarily at collaborative processes around inter- and multi-disciplinary endeavors around the grid and with distributed groups (see http://www.dkrc.org/ for details but with the caveat that the site is under construction). We have two major publications as a group one that summarizes our original position Kanfer, A., Haythornthwaite, C., Bowker, G.C., Bruce, B.C., Burbules, N., Porac, J., & Wade, J. (2000). Modeling distributed knowledge processes in next generation multidisciplinary alliances. Information Systems Frontiers, 2(3/4), 317-331. and one that describes the challenges of both this kind of research and this kind of work (see http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/~haythorn/hay_challenges.html for a draft, currently under review with Social Studies of Science). As Wes Shrum pointed out the Social Studies of Science conferences and journal are good places to start with this. And, as Denise Rall pointed out, some of us at the Oxford Internet Institutes recent conference were able to participate in a brain storming session around this topic led by Steve Woolgar. After all, if Microsoft was worried about spam, they'd close hotmail, and make their software secure. And, if they were worried about users' mental wellbeing (suggested by the use of the term 'inappropriate content' in much of the coverage), then presumably they'd release software that didn't drive people mad.. On Brazil, the Internet use seems to help catching pedophiles and not spreading them out. Anyway, the commercial reasons seem to be more logical than the ethical/moral ones. On BBC One New in the UK last night, the report began with paedophile issues, but swiftly moved to business strategy, highlighting that messaging would be replaced by Messenger, which can be sold to other businesses. This absolutely breaks the paedophile argument, as Mess. is unmonitored. Some French echos: The French economic newspaper Les Echos only speaks of the spam and pornography reasons, in its headline. Le Figaro doesn't mention anything. Libération repeats what we could read this thread here: it's a mixture of closing a service that creates more nuisance than revenu, and creates a good moral image. Le webjournal Journal du Net amply comments the decision and cites the official reasons given by the director of MSN France. The journalist then also mentions the effetcs of the closing of the chat on the net use ratings as the chat was an integral part of the MSN portail. The competitors atack the decision as a advertisement scoop, and as irresponsible . Porn or criminal use of the Internet is not an important question here in France, maybe because the culture is not so sex-opposed as in some Anglo-saxon countries, and because the Internet is less used. In Singapore, this story was given front page treatment, with large headlines. In fact, the Straits Times puts this forward as the biggest story of the day (Thursday).
