I would like to nominate the current Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer) for a second term. First they did an outstanding job (with the help of others especially the communications officers). Second, although some level of renewal is always useful, the association is too young for affording a change of guard. Steve's point is well taken: with respect to content, networking certainly should make information easier to get at, if it's in computers, at any rate (if it's in the heads of people willing to die for the cause, that may be a different matter). Maybe the metaphor holds up better if viewed from the perspective of command and control infrastructure. I don't want to overly belabor the original (admittedly flawed) observation, but just to observe briefly that perhaps the comparison hinges, to put it crudely, on what we mean by "taking down" a node. The original ARPANET, at least according to my rudimentary understanding, was designed not so much with content protection in mind (how secrets might be kept -- a function, for which, as Steve suggests, it may not be particularly well suited), as with the goal of maintaining a viable communication infrastructure -- one that would withstand targeted missile attacks (the Cold War paradigm) without losing data or the capacity to relay crucial transmissions (and thus allowing command/control structures to remain functional). Taking down a node, in this sense, meant quite literally destroying it (not getting the information from it/learning what it was storing). By the same token, US policy is not directed toward "taking out" bin Laden in terms of getting at the stored information he has (the "content" of the node), but rather at physically destroying him as a crucial command control link. The policy assumption I attempted to highlight is not based on the notion that the US might gain useful information by finding out what bin Laden knows (an assumption which, were it possible to get such information, seems reasonable enough), but that eliminating him physically will help destroy the command/control structure of his network. Considered from this perspective, I thought that the model of a distributed network might help convey why this particular form of "taking down" a node (blowing it up) as a means of disrupting crucial operations seemed flawed. The question of how redundant the information is and whether it can be "got at" easier in a distributed model is certainly complicated by the fact that we're not talking about servers but humans. But the evidence certainly seems to back up Steve's suggestion that relatively independent nodes provide a more relevant model than distributed networking per se when it comes to the distribution of information in terrorist networks. I certainly agree that this argument may well function purely at a metaphorical level, but wonder if it might not be a useful metaphor for thinking about the assumption that taking out bin Laden (getting his "head on a platter" as Dick Cheney so Biblicly put it) would disrupt the terrorist organizations with which he has been linked. from memory i am trying to compile two lists of things that are relevant to a visitor to Minneapolis. one is a list for 'internet' related things, electromagnetic culture, if you will. the other, other things... ________________________________________________________ 1: 'internet-related'/elecromagnetic-culture list ________________________________________________________ the Bakken A Library and Museum of Electricity in Life. http://www.bakkenmuseum.org/ (location, phone, hours) founded by the inventor of the (EM) pacemaker has a museum of electrical artifacts, including a theremin instrument, electric eel, and other things. by Lake Calhoun in south mpls... (on the west side) --- Ford Lock & Dam on the mississipi river, around the bend from the U of MN, is a great (architectural) dam that has a unique observation deck, outdoors, and is almost park-like. one can go up above the dam and see it from a walk way, or get up next to the low rise dam and hear the water roar, with plants and tranquility (if it is open at these unpredictable times). else, one can see it from the parking lot, or the Ford Bridge above. the Ford Factory is up across the river, opposite the visitor area, and makes light-duty trucks. for those unfamiliar with why this is internet-related, this dam provides hydropower via putting falling water through turbines, rotating generators of magnetics, to produce electrical current, which is sent to the city dwellers to power up their home computers to surf. it is likely this dam is under security guard right now. (Aldous Huxley's Brave New World has immense irony here) http://www.wildernessinquiry.org/mnparks/parks/Ford118.html http://www.mvp.usace.army.mil/navigation/locks_and_dams/1/ --- Upper and Lower St. Anthony Falls, Dams these dams work together, and there is an 'old stone bridge' that was renovated i believe which is now accessible via walkway, that allows one to oversee the whole immense complex of the dams. there is a visitor platform, inside which has info and one can look into the locks, and also tours, possibly. one thing about this place is that it had an island, i forget, i think it was destroyed, that was sacred to the Native Americans whom lived here prior to the city's founding. this dam is, as far as i remember, related to the flour industry, and the growth of the urban area and the wealth of the city, via the Mississipi River. also, it seens that the industrial archaeologists at the U of MN have done some work on this area (link 2), and may have more information to provide... [from my understanding this was one of the initial internet backbones, in the days of 'gopher', which is/was an internet protocol for accessing content online, in a file/folder paradigm. when there was no graphical web (then came Mosaic..). 'gopher' by the way, is a name used by the U of MN sports teams, as a mascot...] http://web.msi.umn.edu/ [note: there is also the U of MN Geometry Center which has had an impressive web presence for a long time, but today i cannot access their url. they may have something locally to demonstrate or tour... http://www.geom.umn.edu/ ] --- Science Museum of Minnesota i think there is a new building for this museum, but as i remember it, it was worth visiting more than once, as i think it had natural and other sciences together, and must have some electronic aspect today.... it seems it may have (co-)developed from the work done at the San Francisco Exploratorium center, interactive exhibits to learn about scientific concepts, but i am not sure... http://www.smm.org/ --- Walker Art Center, Sculpture Garden and Museum outside, on the edge of downtown, a great sculpture park for large scale work, and smaller rooms made by landscaping for collections of different works. a greenhouse with a carp fish by Frank Gehry. for years, in the museum itself, they had a claus oldenburg softsculpture of an electrical socket or plug hanging above the interior atrium/entrance. also, they still may have part of a Jenny Holzer electronic sculpture which was so intense, when it was several works. also, some work by artists using fluorescent lights, and now, i'm sure, digital technology by the dumptruck load. used to be a great museum, but when i last visited they had a horrendous exhibit with VR goggls and whatnot that seemedmore about the technology than the ideas, the ebb and flow of art (and related influences, such as money). also, well known online, is Steven Dietz's digital art curating, and might be well worth a looksee as maybe they have an offline collection to browse as Minnehaha Falls and Path to the Mississippi River follow a trail to see the Minnehaha creek fall into a torrent of sound and white water some 30 feet below, and eventually gently meld into the Mississippi river about 1/2 mile below the top fo the falls. if you go, make sure to take the walk, via trails, from the bottom of the falls to the river. recommend travelling with others. then, you will come out onto a view of the Mississippi River, almost as if nothing else were around. a large green space (i hope still) is across the river's waters, flowing smoothly by, and one can stand on the shore, sand and rocks, and contemplate civilization, as they see the Ford dam to the left, as the Ford bridge. greatest is seeing a barge and tug come through the locks, quite impressive. memorial garden to the Nuclear Bombing south Minneapolis, but everywhere. lake harriet, calhoun, and lake of the isles (and brown lake or something such towards downtown, and also, hidden lake, too, i think) are where people go to get away and walk and talk and do things. earlier it was the locals, but in later years people from all over would come to drive and walk around the lakes. not sure what they are like now in this regard, but worth seeing (isles is nice. harriet has a great rosegarden/fountain, and a memorial to the WWII nuclear bombing in a Japanese garden. it is one of the most impressive landscapes i have experienced, in its conveyence of peace. also, a bird sanctuary is a few steps away). also, there is an electric trolley that transits between lakes harriet and calhoun, on the west side by the bandshell, should anyone be interested in riding the electric streetcars that used to be the transit infrastructure for the city. worth the nostalgia and going through some trees. peaceful. http://www.phototour.minneapolis.mn.us/streetcar_boarding_5-14-00.html -- the Minnehaha Parkway between Lake Harriet (southermost in the chain of city lakes) and the Mississippi river runs the Minnehaha creek (or crik, as i grew up calling it). suggested, if one wants to enjoy a great landscape, is to walk from the Crik around Penn Street and 54th, for several miles. all the way to the Falls and the Missippi, but that would take a while walking. there are some beautiful old bridges of concrete and metal and wood, and a nature inside the city that still has a sense of wilderness that many who live in the area cherish, protect, and are very proud of. there are bike and walking trails, and then, other trails of dirt on the other side of the crik which one can go up and down along the crik on, when one finds a little dirt trail. truly beautiful.... --- Fort Snelling, park below Fort Snelling is an early fort which protected the area for development however many years ago. it has the fort, and reenactments sometimes, i believe, or tours with actors, i am not sure. once there were settlers and indians' tents pitched. there is a small gift shop inside i think, or musuem even, i forget. but below is an expansive park on the Mississippi River, and it is awe inspiring to get near the water, if one can. i remember cattails all over last time i was there, in the bogs. lots of trails to walk and bike. few people. can get away from the noise a bit and enjoy the land... there may be a new bridge there now, so it may be noisy, but it is nearby the mall of america, but a totally different experience of the local environment, given local culture. --- notes: heard of good food places south of lakestreet in south minneapolis, Nicollet Ave area, where there are many different cultures and foods... there is a Native American Museum on Franklin Ave or nearby, which is well-worth a visit. they have a gallery and also artifacts of Native Americans in US pop culture. [could not find URL, but is in the Phillips neighborhood] Minneapolis Institute of Arts- the best general museum i have been in, an extrordinary collection of artifacts from ancient to everyday. and still think it is free. it is an immense collection. well worth seeing if you enjoy great museums... Gehry Museum/Weisman Art Museum, U of MN. okay museum, small, and have not seen many shows there. but it is a 'postcard museum' by a world-famous architect, contracted out by the University to make a world-class museum. and it is, in appearance. stunning at sunset, across the bridge connecting the University's east and west banks. but, if the drama of the outside metal curves moves you, note the experience inside, which has some of it going on above, but on the floor one remains unaffected by all the facadal aestheticizing of architectural images. still, worth seeing from the outside, and learning about why architecture is not just about beautiful buildings by experiencing the space and light, inside. IDS tower: not sure, i think they yanked it, but this, one of the first skyscrapers of its kind, by Philip Johnson, architect, i believe, used to have a UFO exhibit on the top floor. that went away with the unique weirdness of the people in this land of lakes, but if you say 'weather ball' to many there, they will call you their own.... (there used to be a weather ball on a building which would light up in different colors, given the forecast for the city, 'when the weather ball is green... when the weather ball is blue... etc'.)... many think about the movie "Fargo" about minneapolitan culture. accurate in its vernacular to some extent, but this is also home to some of the oldest computer works in the country... such as Unisys, Control Data Corp & also Cray Computers, (maybe that was in wisconsin). and others, too. including Honeywell (electronics) and other major EM research and development co's, like 3M (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing). in any case, some ideas for the visitor.... hope you enjoy your time in the area and get to see some of the unique aspects of this area, especially the parks and lakes and river... brian -- .. . . . . . .. .. . . . . .... .. .. ... . . . . . . . brian thomas carroll the_electromagnetic_internetwork electromagnetic researcher matter, energy, and in-formation human(a)electronetwork.org http://www.electronetwork.org/

Announcement of Elections, Call for Nominations

The current executive committee of the Association of Internet Researchers was elected two years ago this fall. We are now beginning the process of electing a new executive committee. Any dues-paying member of aoir is invited to run or to nominate someone to run, and you are all urged to participate to your fullest by raising the issues of importance to you and by voting. If you are not a dues-paying member of aoir, becoming one now (or renewing) enables you to participate in this process (and provides other benefits -- see http://www.aoir.org for more information). What follows is a brief overview of the positions at stake, procedural information on nominating, and detailed descriptions of the positions. TIME FRAME OF THE ELECTION: 1. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: Now! 2. END OF NOMINATION PERIOD: Monday, Sept 24, 2001 3. VOTING PERIOD BEGINS: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 4. VOTING PERIOD ENDS: October 9, 2001 5. NEW COMMITTEE ASSUMES DUTIES: At the end of the General Meeting at the Conference, October 14, 2001. Note that voting instructions will be provided separately from this message. A QUICK ELECTION PRIMER: The organizational structure of aoir is pretty simple. There are 4 officers, 3 open seat representatives, and 4 appointed positions who together make up the 11 member executive committee that runs the show. In this election, you are invited to nominate yourself or anyone else whom you think would do a good job, for any of those first 7 positions. Here are brief descriptions of each position (full descriptions from the bylaws are at the end of this message): The 4 OFFICERS (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer): 1. President -- CEO, supervises the organization. 2 year term. 2. Vice President - Back up for President, handles variety of duties as they arise. 2 year term as VP followed by 2 years as President. 3. Secretary: Handles membership and records. 2 year term. 4. Treasurer: Handles the money. 2 year term. OPEN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SEATS: 5 - 7. Three open Seats on the Executive Committee, one of which is a designated Graduate Student Representative: Represent membership of aoir, contribute to decision making, and handle variety of duties as they arise. 2 year terms. WHO CAN RUN AND WHO CAN NOMINATE: Anyone who is a dues-paying member of aoir can run for any position in this election. If you have opinions about what you would like this organization to become or the kinds of things you think it should be doing, then you should put those opinions into action by running. If you have talents or experience that you think we could use, and you'd like to put them to use for us, you should run. Just about all of aoir's business is conducted online. Remember that if you became a member by virtue of registering for the first conference, that membership is about to expire. Dues must be paid by the start of the voting period (September 24) to appear on the ballot. Aoir members should also feel free to nominate others who they think would do a good job in any of these positions. If you are not sure that someone is a paid member, nominate them anyway, we can check for you. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO NOMINATE SOMEONE? Nominations can be made via the air-l list (and if sent there should include "nomination" in the subject line) or e-mailed off-list to Jeremy Hunsinger at nominate(a)aoir.org. Self Nominations: Email a statement of up to 200 words outlining your goals and concerns about aoir. Include a brief biographical sketch and if you have one, a link to your website. This information will be posted on the aoir member site at the close of the nomination period and will serve as your one official opportunity to campaign. Nominating Others: Email the name of the person you want to nominate, the position for which you are nominating this person, contact information for that person, and an indication of whether you know if this person would accept this nomination (if you don't know, we'll contact them and ask). Once a nomination has been accepted by the nominee, the nominee will be asked to send the the statement and biographical sketch described above. Astute readers of the bylaws will notice that elections are being conducted on a compressed time frame this year in order to get a new administration in place at the conference where many of them will have an opportunity to meet face to face and be introduced to the membership. It took longer to finish up the bylaws than we wanted, so we hope you'll forgive this irregularity. From the Bylaws, here are the full duties of each elected role: DUTIES OF PRESIDENT The President shall be the chief executive officer of the corporation and shall, subject to the control of the Board of Directors, supervise and control the affairs of the corporation and the activities of the officers. He or she shall perform all duties incident to her or his office and such other duties as may be required by law, by the Articles of Incorporation, or by these Bylaws, or which may be prescribed from time to time by the Board of Directors or membership. Unless another person is specifically appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Directors, the President shall preside at all meetings of the Board of Directors and at all meetings of the members. Except as otherwise expressly provided by law, by the Articles of Incorporation, or these Bylaws, he or she shall, in the name of the corporation, execute such deeds, mortgages, bonds, contracts, checks, or other instruments which may from time to time be authorized by the Board of Directors or the membership. SECTION 7. DUTIES OF VICE PRESIDENT In the absence of the President, or in the event of her or his inability or refusal to act, the Vice President shall perform all the duties of the President, and when so acting shall have all the powers and be subject to all the restrictions on, the President. The Vice President shall have other powers and perform such other duties as may be prescribed by law, the Articles of Incorporation, these Bylaws, or as may be prescribed by the Board of Directors or membership. SECTION 8. DUTIES OF SECRETARY Certify and keep at the principal office of the corporation the original, or a copy, of these Bylaws as amended or otherwise altered to date. Keep at the principal office of the corporation or at such other place as the board may determine, a book of minutes of all meetings of the directors, the members, and if applicable, meetings of committees of directors and of members, recording therein the time and place of holding, whether regular or special, how called, how notice thereof was given, the names of those present or represented at the meeting, and the proceedings thereof. See that all notices are duly given in accordance with the provisions of these Bylaws or as required by law. SECTION 9. DUTIES OF TREASURER Have charge and custody of, and be responsible for, all funds and securities of the corporation, and deposit all such funds in the name of the corporation in such banks, trust companies, or other depositories as shall be selected by the Board of Directors. Receive, and give receipt for, monies due and payable to the corporation from any source whatsoever. Disburse, or cause to be disbursed, the funds of the corporation as may be directed by the Board of Directors or Executive Committee, taking proper vouchers for such disbursements. Keep and maintain adequate and correct accounts of the corporation's properties and business transactions, including accounts of assets, liabilities, receipts, disbursements, gains and losses. Exhibit at all reasonable times the books of account and financial records to any director or officer of the corporation, or to her or his agent or attorney, on request therefor. Render to the President and directors, whenever requested, an account of any or all of his or her transactions as Treasurer and of the financial condition of the corporation. Prepare, or cause to be prepared, and certify or cause to be certified, the financial statements to be included in any required reports. In general, perform all duties incident to the office Treasurer and such other duties as may be required by law, the Articles of Incorporation of the corporation, or by these Bylaws, or which may be assigned to her or him from time to time by the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee or the membership. SECTION 1. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The Executive Committee shall direct the day-to-day operations of the corporation. It shall consist of eleven members. the five elected officers, and the Past President will serve on the Executive Committee. Additionally the membership, during regular elections of officers, will also elect three open seats. Duties are flexible, consisting largely of Committee and project assignments, as assigned by the Executive Committee.. Two other members shall be appointed by the Executive Committee to serve as officers. The Systems Administrator is responsible for the association's technical systems on which its Web site, e-mail list and other means of Internet communication operate. The Systems Manager is responsible for the content and appearance of the association's Web site and other means of Internet communication (except its e-mail lists). The Systems Administrator and Systems Manager will coordinate their efforts to the best of their abilities. The Board of Directors may delegate to the Executive Committee the powers and authority of the board in the management and affairs of the corporation, to the extent permitted and except as may otherwise be provided, by provisions of law. By a majority vote of its members, the Board of Directors may at any time revoke or modify any or all of the Executive Committee authority so delegated. There's a post about it on the front page - scroll down to the appropriate date (11th or 12th) Don't know where to find more global statistics, but it'd be interesting. Montréal researchers in MPLS?

Assoc. of Internet Researchers, to those attending the conference in Minneapolis (mpls). i was going to wait to write but will soon be shipping my computer so i could not wait for a more appropriate time to post this message regarding internet research. thus, my apologies if it is off-base for larger issues. i have tried (2x i believe) to have my work presented in the conferences but did not make the cut. my work is not of the traditional academic approach, dissecting 'the Internet' from its other factors, but rather looking at the things preceding the Internet, in basic research. for example, i believe it is a limit to focus on 'the Internet' as a foci of study, when it is an extension of a system 15 billion years old, if it were openly debated and could be reasoned this way in public. but such is not the case, it seems. i am interested in finding those who will be in MPLS, like i, during the conference who would be interested in meeting and discussing work outside the conference. i grew up in Minneapolis and will send a short list of some unique places one could visit to understand the local environment and some of its jewels. but first, i am interested in networking with those from Montréal, Québec, Canada, whom are approaching this subject and are open to exploring it in detail, outside of current paradigms. my work, as most others, began in a displicanary construct. architecture, for me, as a way of under- standing, describing, defining. architecture is and has always been a discipline allowing a broad/general approach, general and specific, which can get a big- picture view of a discrete event, such as the Internet. logically, the Internet is an extenstion of much of the electrification of our societies over the last 200 years. without it, no Internet. but more, further back, without the science of batteries, static elect- ricity, back to Thales 2500 years ago, and further, to the concepts of religion and the 'charge' often associated with these, such as the gods of lightening and thunder, Zeus and Thor. further back, into the reigning cosmology, that the electromagnetic big- bang, theoretical as it is, still offers a direct lineage from the Big Bang to the Internet which transverses the progession of electromagnetism from realms of the natural, to artifice of the tools and technologies of power, media which are at the foundation of the current network, most have began using in the last 5+ years, dealing mostly with its 'virtual' aspects, and defining it in traditional terms of traditional disciplines, another brick in the wall of the previous paradigm. yet, it is this compartmentalization of the Internet from issues it is directly related to, such as the power plant and pollution, and its connection to global warming and war, nuclear even, to economic devastation should these systems fail (california), and great inefficiency which underlies 'the Internet' that i do not find in any of the speakers or sessions in your conference. thus, i can see why such work may not fit into an academic approach to something beyond the scope of any one discipline. one reason for this, i believe, is that 'the Internet' has become the focus of disciplines, each adding its own vantage on its interpretation. and, in conferences such as AoIR 2, that the whole view is supposedly to be found in bringing these separate views together. i disagree. and will explain why... the way things are, in research today, focusses on the discipline as the organizer of content, and its expertise in dealing with content, the content, in this case 'the Internet', added onto the heap of things each discipline, economic or social, pursues. it is like McLuhan's 'the medium is the message', where messaging ideas about 'the Internet' is by default, assumed meaningful, as it describes/defines the medium. but the medium, the computer networks and power plugs, do not end at the socket and plug. nor do there impacts. an alternative to this type of approach would be to focus on the 'the Internet' as the meaning, which seems to be done, but what is 'the Interent' if it is not its grand design, its grand infrastructure, science, technology, and cosmology? i no longer wonder about this. thus, my work focusses on 'electromagnetic studies', and educating citizens about the basics of this, and its ramifications, and its connections to current events, such as is the electronic internetwork. if EM studies were the center, not the part, and the discplines approached it together, instead of at a conference, but as its own entity, it would be closer to the large world picture that the Internet is yet but one more extension of. for example, fascinating it would be to see a researcher look at the evolution of economics from shells to e-cash. a military historian from spears to EMP bombs. an artist, from paint to painting software. an architectural researcher from building pre- and post- electrification. a political scientist, from oral debates to online debates. a writer, from text to word- processing. some of which has been done, but not around a common theme. so too, with physics, with cosmology, with archaeology, geology, medical science, amongst myriad other things. focussing on 'the Internet' as the center of study, and research, is akin to looking at the foot of an elephant and trying to describe the whole. common sense, it has no place in the expertise, if 'the Internet' is as far as the logic can go. and this seems to be the manufacturing of knowledge about what is going on, where it is limited by a para- digm, a way of seeing/perceiving an event, as discrete, seperated, dissectable from a larger, much more complex, but also much more simple who. a GUT feeling, if you will. the basic public R&D i have worked on started off with architecture, for its generalist view- point, trying to grapple with the Internet, yet getting into its interconnections with other things, on the whole unacknowledged.... the architectural of electricity http://www.electronetwork.org/works/ae/ recently, i published a more detailed account for the everyday citizen, still in an archi- tectural language, but one which allows for these larger connections with other events, such as war, pollution, inefficiency, and goals for action (multidiscplinary electro- networking around electromagnetic knowledge).
