The newly formed Department, which becomes official in July 2002, brings together the University of Washington's School of Communications and the Department of Speech Communication. The new Department's mission is to advance the study and practice of communication across diverse contexts by using both humanistic and social scientific approaches. The four core principles that guide the Department's graduate program are intellectual and cultural pluralism, interdisciplinary theorizing, innovation through collaboration, and public scholarship. Currently, the Department seeks scholars who study any of the following: interpersonal interaction in face-to-face or on-line settings; political, cultural, or economic implications of new communication technologies; communication among nations, cultures, and social groups in increasingly diverse global environments. The Department has a special interest in scholars whose research incorporates the experiences of indigenous cultures or underrepresented populations. Strong candidates for these positions will have the ability to sustain a high-quality program of research and teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Candidates must have earned or be close to completion of a Ph.D. by September 16, 2002, which is the start date for the positions. Two new programs will be introduced in January, 2002, at UniSA. These are the Master of Arts (Knowledge Management) and the Master of Arts (Internet Communication Strategies). Both programs seek to educate and train people for the changing organisations, society and economy in which we live and work. They address issues from the practical and applied, to the theoretical and critical, and will to provide insights and understanding as well as immediately applicable skills. The complexity of both these areas is addressed by offering a wide range of courses, through which individual pathways can be designed to suit particular needs and circumstances. Courses include Information Economics, Competitive Intelligence, Information Ethics, Internet Culture and Community, Virtual Leisure Industries, Information Architecture and Design, The Learning Organisation and more... All courses in both programs are available in flexible, online delivery, using cutting-edge pedagogical technologies and techniques, and so where you live makes little difference. Courses are also offered in short, intensive one-week formats, to suit those who fancy a trip to Adelaide, South Australia! Normal entry to these degrees is a recognised Bachelor of Arts degree. However, the University has a Recognition of Prior Learning Policy, which means that if you do not have an undergraduate degree, your work experience and other training may be sufficient to permit entry to the programs. persuasion on the Web

Greetings, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to non-proprietary data or literature that has examined which characteristics of Web sites are most successful in persuading people (either by shifting their opinion or to perform a behavior, i.e., buying something, voting for something, losing weight,etc). For example, does the credibility of the site sponsor matter, or do sites with interactive features better engage individuals with the subject matter? And so on... Ideally, I am looking for data specifically for teens, or broken down by gender, but I don't know if those studies have been done yet. Any leads are greatly appreciated. arriving early

Hi everybody, I'm arriving early in Minneapolis and was wondering if some of you might already be in town or are also arriving early. It might be nice to meet a couple of people informally beforehand, maybe to have a drink or to go see a site together. I'm arriving in Minneapolis this Thursday, Oct. 4, so there's quite some time to meet up :) From October 4-8 I'm staying at: Day's Inn, 2407 University Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, 612-623-3999. (This is just a couple of blocks from the campus) If I'm in, you can probably reach me there (I don't have a roomnumber just yet) if not, leave a message. Greetings: There have been a handful of people e-mailing me about the upcoming conference at the University of Minnesota asking whether we're still holding it, etc. Yes, we are still holding it. There has been heartening confidence from participants, and we can expect registration to be at the 350 - 400 person mark, perhaps more depending on on-site registrations. All of the keynote speakers are indeed planning to attend. Will it be the conference we had hoped for before September 11? Yes and, actually, quite a bit more. Of course, much has changed for all of us since that day, and there have been some who planned to attend but will not. However, the majority has indicated they will be present and we are getting new registrations daily. (As an aside, the conference web site, thanks to John Logie, is updated regularly.) Not only are we going to have more people at the conference than we did last year, but we currently have 80 concurrent sessions planned, a 25% increase from last year's conference.
