Web Archive of Sep11 Attack

Friends -- We are working with The Internet Archive (archive.org) and the Library of Congress to build an archive of the emerging web sphere related to the September 11 Terrorist Attack. As hundreds (thousands?) of web sites around the world react to these events, we think it is critical to identify, archive and annotate these sites and pages. We're interested in finding as much web content as possible, from as many different sites and different countries as possible. Everything is of interest, especially those sites not likely to be picked up by search engines or web crawlers (like individual's pages with links sent via email). This archive will be made available to the public in a way similar to the Election Collection 2000 [http://archive0.alexa.com/collections/e2k.html] To get this effort moving, we have quickly together a *very simple* web site at a new site, http://webarchivist.org. If you're interested, visit that site, and follow the (hopefully) simple directions. Basically, what we're asking is that you click on a special link (that you install on your browser) whenever you are visiting a site that you think should be archived. Clicking on the link will alert our system to archive that site immediately. If you're up for it, you can also get a tool that allows you to fill out a 3-question "site coding sheet", identifying the type of site producer, the kinds of activities available on the site, and an open-ended assessment of the site. If you'd rather, feel free to send list of links to us at one of the email addresses below. We hope you'll join us in this important activity. We'll try to have some preliminary results of the effort available by the time of the AOIR conference next month. And, please, any comments or suggestions on how to identify relevant sites -- send them along! Dear Colleagues, The Norwegian School of Management is establishing an internal competence school. Some of my colleagues are engaged in a project to develop the strategic platform for the school. They have asked me to help locate similar internal schools for staff and faculty at business schools and universities around the world. The goal of the project is to shape a concept that will help the Norwegian School of Management to systemically document and map the organization's need for competence development, and then to create and implement competence development programs. These programs are only for employees, not for students. The school now plans to implement the following programs: - Introduction program for new employees - Management development program - Basic competence programs for all employees - Special competence programs for specific groups I would be deeply grateful for information on any comparable programs in business schools and universities, or in private enterprise. We need to come together as communities within our nation and nations around the world as we respond and care for one another. You can do something right now via the Internet from your home and place of work as well as donate blood, money, and time to relief efforts. Use the Internet as a simple communication tool to provide mutual benefit and support to others in this crisis and help build the bonds required to deal with what comes next. Bringing people together and strengthening the bonds of family, friendship, and neighbors is step one, online and in-person. Step two is to use the Internet to gain insight and understanding on a global basis so we can more effectively respond and change the environment that motivates terrorism. While our governments, intelligence operations, and armies will respond with great force, we as humans can do our part one person at a time. The cornerstone of your action is the creation of different kinds of e-mail group lists. You can create a free e-mail lists in minutes from websites like YahooGroups <http://groups.yahoo.com/>, Topica <http://topica.com>, and others. An e-mail list allows you to exchange messages through one e-mail address (i.e. myfamily(a)yahoogroups.com) among a group of members subscribed to the list. E-mail can be private or public and lists may be set-up to deliver one-way announcements or allow open discussion. If you create a public e-mail list, send me an announcement netresponse(a)publicus.net that I can share with others. Take action now by creating an e-mail list for: 1. Your Family - Create an e-mail group list for your extended family. E-mail lists will help you communicate as a family group in an easy and convenient manner. Step one is to collect all of your family member addresses. You should do this whether this directly affected your family or not. 2. Friends - Create an e-mail list for friends who want to provide mutual support to each other and families of those who are missing, confirmed dead, or survivors who need assistance. Of course, any group of friends can create a list to support the needs of any shared friend in any difficult life situation or simply to make group contact easy across the country, town, or world. 3. Neighbors - Whether for the people who live on your block, your larger neighborhood or entire town, e-mail forums you should build an e-mail list in the common interest for community conversation. These forums are technically like all those global special interest discussion forums, but instead are local and general in nature. When a community is in crisis, it needs a forum that people can turn to for immediate many-to-many communication. At the very local level we need the protection of neighbors who communicate with one another and the Internet can help break that ice required to rebuild the in-person connections required to survive. I run an e-mail list for my neighborhood, so can you. If we see suspicious activity in our neighborhoods, we need the bonds to discover and report such activity to the appropriate authorities. Building trust among neighbors is a key building block for local safety and security. Area Response to Attacks - One way to help coordinate tributes and the response in your country (many of those missing are citizens of many countries), state, or city, is to create special e-mail lists for communication among those seeking to aid the recovery or those who want to respond. Such forums can be created to deal with local issues such as helping traumatized children, organizing rallies and memorial services, or dealing with local discrimination and acts not in the spirit of domestic tolerance. 5. Share News, Information and Views - Through e-mail lists like the Sept11info(a)yahoogroups.com set up voluntarily by Andy Carvin <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sept11info> thousands of people are sharing breaking news and in-depth resources that allow us to gain deeper insights into what is happening. My own site <http://www.politicalbs.com> provides quick links to additional web-based political discussion forums and to government and media sources around the world. As the United States and its allies develop their response, the Internet will be used on a global basis to share news and information unlike never before. This and e-mail lists that you create will allow people to communicate directly and unmediated around the world. We will be able to interact directly with those in the Middle East and read their news just as they can watch and read ours. Nothing will break down the highly propagandistic mass media in some countries or even our own as military action is taken. That is not that point. The challenge for us is to use the Internet to build direct human connection among the vast majority of moderate and reasonable individuals in all countries so we can learn as much as we can about the motivations of terrorists and how to most effectively attack and cut off the support for those organizations and ideologies. However you respond to recent events, the Internet can play a useful and practical role. That said, the Internet is only a small part of what we all can and should do. Events like these help us appreciate our families and friends and what really matters in this world. By organizing online we can more quickly respond to what is next and hopefully help control our own destiny. September 11 and the Internet People have been asking me to comment on the uses of the Internet since yesterday¹s horrific events. I must say that like everyone else in this country and around the world, I am in shock. I am experiencing this event more as a human being and U.S. citizen than I am as a scholar and critic. And, I think it may be too early for us to know what roles the Internet is playing. It will be weeks, even months, before we can look back with even some perspective. Still, it is apparent that the Internet is playing am important role as an information source. Both traditional sites, like cnn.com, and non-traditional sites, such as the many Web sites springing up in response to yesterday, are available to anyone around the world. As is always the case with the Internet, its speed and reach have brought photographs and stories, both amateur and professional, to the entire world. People who have gone back to work today are no doubt spending as much time surfing the Web as they are trying to bring some sense of normalcy to their workplaces. The Internet is also a site where misinformation can and does flourish and where, often, emotions run high. We must be careful not to let the speedy nature of Internet communication lead us to rumor-spreading or anger against entire groups of people. We should use the Internet at this time as a place for community and debate and not for hatred. I have seen on the news that U.S. intelligence agencies are looking for ISP logs, email messages, and other digital evidence as part of their investigations. These days, there is always an Internet angle to any criminal act, and we will have to wait and see what if any role the Internet had in the communications of the terrorists. It occurred to me yesterday that this sort of strike is the kind of thing the Internet was originally designed to withstand. You can take out one node, but you can¹t take down the entire network when such a network is set up like a web rather than a top-down hierarchy (or as a friend of mine liked to say, a vine growing along your garden fence, sending shoots in all different directions, versus a nicely trimmed tree). So while we may have lost the physical sites where many major financial transactions took place, I like to believe that the heart of these transactions are digital, backed-up, and inspired, ultimately, by confidence in our inventions and economy. Companies that have lost hundreds of people and floors of office space have taken to the Web to post words of comfort and reassurance. Like the Internet, our economy cannot be taken down with the loss of one site. We must continue to believe in ourselves as we focus on how to reopen the markets and make the world more secure. This of course sounds so empty, in a way, and says nothing about the people whose lives were lost, those who will suffer terribly for the rest of their lives because they lost loved ones, and all of us are affected in other ways. The use of cell phones gives us insight into the terror and final moments on the highjacked planes. Word of these cell phone calls were posted on the Internet quickly, and already we have heard the moving and brave stories of what people said in their final moments. Because of one set of calls, we now appear to know that brave people were able to avert at least one of the planes, crashing into a field rather than a building of people. That is really all I have to say today. My thoughts right now are with the victims, their families, and all of humanity. It is an unthinkable thing that has happened. All the dot-com hype of the past two years suddenly seems so silly and meaningless to me. Peace to all of you. Laura Gurak ---------------- Laura J. Call for Papers CRAFT, CRITIQUE, CULTURE: The University of Iowa's 2nd Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Writing in the Academy April 12-14, 2002 Keynote Speakers: N. Katherine Hayles, Shelley Jackson, Kevin Kopelson, Thomas Swiss CRAFT, CRITIQUE, CULTURE is an interdisciplinary conference focusing on the divisions between critical and creative approaches to writing both within and outside the academy. This year's conference will also have a special focus on technologies of writing and the impact of media on the creation and reception of texts. How have technological media historically influenced the divisions between academic, avant-garde, and popular writers and audiences? What is the future of the concept and practice of writing in our rapidly changing world? How do new technologies promise to transform works, authors, and readers? CRAFT, CRITIQUE, CULTURE invites scholars and writers from a range of disciplines, such as literary studies, cultural studies, communication studies, creative writing, theater, film, music, and art history, to present either formal papers or creative work, including poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and multimedia presentations. one last fling at fair use

have been travelling, but did want to add the following thoughts to the now aging fair use thread regarding treatment of web texts and e-mail. when last we heard from our hero, the statement that market value concerns were found in regulations regarding fair use had been made along with the suggestion that works with no market value could therefore be taken in their entirety, which prompted the following clarifications. re "market value": - this is taken into consideration in determining whether or not there is fair use, but is NOT, as was the original point under discussion, taken into account in determining whether or not a piece is copyrightable or copyrighted. - taking a piece in its entirety is NEVER considered fair use, irrespective of any question of market value -- unless an item is completely out of print and is otherwise unavailable. - the issue of market value in determining fair use is not whether or not there is any, but the EFFECT of the use claimed covered by fair use UPON market value. if there is enormous market value in the work being used but no effect upon that value in the use, it's fair use. some market value is demonstrated by any use for which fair use is being claimed. if the market value is low but the effect is high, it's not ok. etc. - fair use is not a matter of regulation but judicial interpretation of the statutory law of copyright, which itself is based on the intellectual property rights provision in the us constitution. sandra braman
