Faculty Openings: Social Implications of IT; Information Studies; Human-Computer Interaction. National University of Singapore The Information & Communications Management Programme in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the National University of Singapore seeks two or more open-rank faculty members in the social, political, cultural, and ethical implications of IT. We are looking for a candidate in human computer interaction and IT content design areas as well. The successful candidates will be expected to help develop curriculum, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and give new research directions to this relatively new programme at NUS. Areas of interest include, contexts of computers and information use; internet studies; ethics and intellectual property rights; connectivity and digital divide; users and identities; gendered aspects of IT; IT and organizations; political implications of IT; information management; surveillance and privacy; cross-national comparisons of IT development; innovations systems and IT; bio-informatics; history of IT; social and cultural aspects of IT design; cultural and critical studies of information society; and social studies of information science and technology. Candidates with expertise in one or more of these areas should submit: (1) a letter of application describing their teaching and research interests; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) sample written work and syllabus (for junior level appointments); and, three letters of recommendation. PhD is required. Appointments will be on a tenure-track basis, and in exceptional cases tenure will be granted on appointment. Salary and benefits are competitive. If I might go one step further, you might also consider the issue of the visualization of dynamically interconnected data in general, of the translation of sampled data into spatialized, temporalized, haptic/embodied, and/or linguistic 'representations' and feedback. Nodes and links are but one frame, and even multidimensional networks can be represented different ways. Many of the people I work with are quite creatively excited by 'visualization' research. Further, socio-cultural theorists such as Johannes Fabian have raised the question of the visualist bias of social theories and assumptions about power (eg the panopticon), while many scientists with whom I have talked, such as GIS mapmakers, and interested in working with artists to think of new ways to 'inform' all the data. To that end, you might also consider some of the 'data-mining' software (some of it free) on: <www.kdnuggets.com/software/visualization.html >. In fact, this professional data mining site is full of interesting software <http://www.kdnuggets.com/software/index.html> and resources, <http://www.kdnuggets.com/index.html>. The site includes text analysis, classification, clustering software, as well as examples of companies involved in data mining. There are variants of network analysis software here which might not have been appropriate on INSNA's site, but which explores the organization in and of networks, as well as other models. Good luck! While I've known people who used such software (eg., Negopy), I am not particularly knowledgeable. Further the appropriateness, cost, and robustness of any particular software can vary between different tasks. Barry Wellman's group and network would be knowledgeable (and he has a fine publications page http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/publications/index.html ). Nine theoretical wrinkles of your mathematical situation: 1. defining and locating 'actors/actants/nodes' for your data; 2. relating 'mere' connectedness and centrality within networks to power over and in a network; 3. considering networks in networks (from my perspective any 'node' is itself a network); 4. relating links at the level of parts or at the level of super-sets to those which do not occur at the level of study, and vice versa; 5. clarifying the way the 'collection' of the data, particularly where it is 'easy' foregrounds certain questions over others; 6. Deciding whether to distinguish networks based on content, media, frequency, etc. or to combine them as a unitary network; 7. Determining or accounting for what is missing from the network (temporary autonomous situations/zones, hidden links, sensitive links, etc.); 8. Conversely, setting a value for what might be in or constituting a link in a network based on play, mistake, or other indeterminancies (other than eliminating it as noise); and importantly, 9. defining/deconstructing the boundary or level of the study, although boundary conditions can simply be asserted, often by someone evincing a perspective from 'outside' the network, even if they also 'belong' to it - the notion of 'deconstruction' is very much meant here. How one answers those questions will have a great impact on where and how the statistics are collected, and on what the statistics produce, what they reveal, and how they are interpreted. Good luck! Terminology query ...

Dear Colleagues, A colleague in Denmark asks a technical terminology question. Someone on this list may know the answer. He asks: "Would you please confirm that the right translation of the Danish word 'teleslynge' is 'handsfree' in English. Teleslynge means that if you have an hearing aid in your ear, the sound from i.e. a loudspeaker will come though your hearing aid via radio waves. In churches it is normal with this feature." I know most of you don't speak Danish, but I'd be grateful to know what such a device is called. If there is a term for a similar device, I'll welcome that information. Ken, I don't speak Danish, but here's a page re: the assistive technology you're talking about: http://members.aol.com/centrumweb/csalspur.html To my way of thinking, the work "handsfree" surely misses the mark.
