Hi, My name is Colin Koteles and I represent the Information Technology Studies undergraduate minor, a program offered through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, we are gathering data on programs, degrees, minors, etc. that involve the study of the Internet. These programs are variously titled Internet Studies, Information Studies, Information Technology Studies, Information Science, etc. While we are aware of those programs that have received coverage in the press (e.g., Brandeis, Centenary College of Louisiana) as well as programs offered by many of the ALISE affiliated institutions, we would like to hear about any other programs, both existing and soon to exist. We are specifically looking for programs that provide a course of study rather than interdisciplinary institutes where research may go on, but we'd like to hear about the interdisciplinary institutes as well. If you offer such a program now or will in the near future, we'd like to hear about it. Dear colleagues: This is an invitation to contribute to a special issue in the Swiss Journal of Psychology devoted to «Studying the Internet: A challenge for modern psychology». Guest editors will be Kai Sassenberg (University of Jena, Germany), Margarete Boos (University of Göttingen, Germany), Tom Postmes (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands), and myself. The issue will appear in 2003 (deadline January 31, 2002). It will focus on new theoretical, empirical, and methodological approaches to applications of the Internet, including, but not limited to, studies that focus on Web-based experimentation, computer-mediated communication, hypertext navigation, interface design, and the impact of the Internet on "off-line life". Researchers who are investigating the psychological impact of the Internet in basic research as well as in educational, clinical, or business settings are cordially invited to submit their work. The special issue will emphasize empirical reports, but it may also include specialized theoretical and review papers. IS Openings at the Most Wired Public University in the US

IS has been at NJIT for decades, but our IS Department is only a few days old, along with our new College of Computing Services. And we're growing rapidly. Last year we hired 6 new IS faculty, and we have several openings for Assistant, Associate and Full Professors starting in Spring and Fall 2002, with yet more anticipated for the future! For three years, Yahoo! Internet Life magazine has named NJIT as the "most wired" public university in the U.S. in its annual ranking, and the country's 3rd most wired university overall. NJIT has several laboratory facilities, including a new Collaborative Hypermedia and Application Development Lab and a new electronic arts habitat (eARTh) Lab. NJIT is located 25 minutes from New York City by train. Our IS program is one of the largest in the New York metropolitan area. The area has a high concentration of industry and businesses, with many opportunities for research collaboration and consulting. We also have a high degree of collaboration among researchers across campus. In our B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. programs, Assistant Professors teach 2 courses a year, and Associate Professors teach 4 courses a year. Activists are also incorporating the Internet into their strategies to affect change in society. This edited volume seeks to bring together essays that discuss current issues surrounding how activists, social movement groups/organizations, and grassroots organizations are using the Internet for social change work. This volume seeks to highlight the importance of current social movement theory, cultural studies, media studies, and cyberculture studies to explore how cyberspace can or can not aid people working towards social change. We seek submissions that discuss the following: -- The application of social movement theory to Internet social movement groups -- Essays by activists about how cyberspace has changed activism or allowed activists to create social change -- Comparative analyses of online activist groups and offline activist groups -- Theoretical frameworks for studying online activism/social movements -- Case studies on race-, gender-, or sexuality-based movements on the Internet Essays should be in the range of 5,000 to 8,000 words. Call for Papers and Panel Proposals for the Media Ecology Association Program at the 2002 Annual Convention of the National Communication Association November 21-24, 2002 New Orleans Sheraton & New Orleans Marriott The Media Ecology Association (http://www.media-ecology.org) invites submissions of competitive papers, panel programs and other innovative programs addressing theoretical, research, and/or methodological issues in Media Ecology, the study of the leading or defining role of technology and techniques, modes of information and codes of communication in human affairs (e.g., language and culture, technology and culture, orality and literacy, medium theory, the symbolic structure or grammar of communication media and its implications, etc.). Each complete paper submission must include: (1) a detachable title page with the title of the paper and author name, address, institutional affiliation and e-mail address; (2) a separate 50-75 word abstract with the paper's title. <fontfamily><param>Geneva</param>Reminder: Call For Papers Special theme issue of the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media: New Media and the Commercial Sphere New Media and the Commercial Sphere is the title of a special issue now being planned for the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media. This issue will be guest co-edited by Matthew P. McAllister of the Department of Communication Studies at Virginia Tech and Joseph Turow of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. The interrelationships between society's commercial sphere and such new electronic media as the wired Internet, the wireless Web, interactive television, and digital radio have not received enough scholarly attention. This special issue is intended to encourage research on a broad spectrum of topics relating to the process and effects of marketing and advertising on the emerging digital interactive media environment.
