Applicants will be considered at the assistant professor level. We seek an interdisciplinary practitioner whose research explores humanities-based HCI. Preference will be given to candidates whose research relates to one or more of the following current areas of focus: Educational Technology, AI, STEM/STEAM Education, Media Arts, Civic Media, Critical Cultural Studies, Feminist or Queer Science and Technology Studies (STS), or Environmental Justice. Collaboration with faculty and students working in these and other related fields across the school and the institute is encouraged. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students. Job Responsibilities The teaching load for this position is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities include courses at the undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) level that cover fundamental and specialized methods in HCI and associated areas, such as Information Design, Media Arts, Interaction Design, and Visual Design. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the ongoing development of programs meant to prepare students for careers in interaction design, information design, UI/UX, experience design, and media arts, as well as cultural and critical approaches to digital culture. As a member of LMC, the candidate will contribute to the above programs as well as the highly interdisciplinary and collaborative GVU Center and Institute for People and Technology (IPAT). The successful candidate will have access to shared laboratory and/or studio space associated with the Digital Media graduate programs, as well as other collective resources for research in the Technology Square Research Building. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, and accelerating through it, we identified a *shift in progress* whereby digital images took an increasingly central role in constructing, maintaining and transforming formal and informal processes of adjudicating *what counts* as true. What kind of images are considered *valid,* are allowed and accepted as-if true? How do they convince, and get authorized, and become usable? How are digital technologies influencing the impact of visuality vis-à-vis accountability? Will visual accountability be used in ways that impact vulnerable individuals (See Neu 2006)? It is worth wondering how digital image sharing contributes to digital infrastructures and impacts practices of enacting certain truths in everyday life. Particular ways of looking that are honed online and emerge out of digital sociality, challenge visual sociology to devise new ways to dialogue with audiences across the academy, bring sociological understandings to the quotidian micro-level, and connect the practice of sociology to broader public issues. Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1990) posited that the power of photography is extrinsic to photography itself and gains currency by communicating within a system of values. When these pictures become mobile, together with the apps that allow their creation and circulation, they contribute to what Hjorth and Pink call a “social lubricant” (2014). In 2021, 22-year-old Gabby Petito was reported missing in the USA: Her boyfriend was on the run. Cyber sleuths using Twitter and TikTok began to share information to build a timeline of Petito’s movements, zeroing in on the Instagram photos she had been posting up to the time she disappeared. One user noted her hair had dark roots in one photo and seemed to have been freshly dyed blonde in another; others examined the pictures and triangulated with dates to show this was an error. Lavrence and Cambre (2020) use the term, the “digital forensic gaze,” to describe ways of looking that mobilize veridical techniques when scrutinizing online images, as seen when people and groups mobilize online. In these kinds of contexts, such images are considered dubious until proven otherwise. Meanwhile, seemingly moving in the opposite direction, institutions and corporations are using everyday images as evidence and are asking employees and others to “prove” their claims with photos. For example, in June 2022, the FedEx Corporation in the USA announced it would be offering “Picture proof of delivery” for packages released without a signature. Customers tracking packages will receive a photo showing its location. But what if the package is removed or the picture is manipulated? What might be at stake in the gradual normalization of these practices? A sense of obligation to “show” not just “tell” has begun to permeate the professional sphere, and nascent practices of institutional requests for photographs from employees and other members has slowly been gaining legitimacy. What are the implications of these new practices for visual sociology? What kinds of literacies are required to navigate these emerging ocular regimes? The International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS) is a well-established event that has been held around the world for over 25 years. The goal of this conference is to bring together industrial, academic, and government experts from a variety of application domains and software disciplines, to discuss how the disciplines’ problems and solution techniques interact within the whole system. Researchers, practitioners, tool developers and users, and technology transfer experts are all welcome. The scope of the conference includes long-term research issues, near-term requirements and challenges, established complex systems, emerging promising tools, and retrospective and prospective reflections of research and development into complex systems. TOSEM will conduct its rigorous review process and make final decisions on acceptance. SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION Full papers are divided into two categories: Technical Papers and Experience Reports. The papers submitted to both categories will be reviewed by the program committee members, and papers accepted in either category will be published in the conference proceedings. Technical papers should describe original research, and experience reports should present practical projects carried out in the industry, and reflect on the lessons learnt from them. The Internet is an important tool to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)[1] and to globally support human rights. Consequently, the lack of meaningful access to digital infrastructure and services is also a form of disenfranchisement. Solely having Internet access is not enough. At the same time as we work to connect the next billion people and reduce the digital divide, it is also important to understand persistent and novel inequalities in the digital age when accessing content and services. There are more and more barriers to meaningful access to the services and applications that run on the Internet. Even if Internet connectivity is available, information and services access may remain challenged and unequal. This workshop aims to collect reports about barriers to access content and services on the Internet, e.g based on filtering, blocking as well as due to general inequality of technological capabilities, like device or protocol limitations. The workshop aims to help the Internet community get a better understanding of how the Internet functions in different parts of the world and which technology or techniques need to be used to gain access to content. Further this workshop aims to build an understanding of what “being connected” to the Internet means: What is the Internet to users? What is needed to be meaningfully connected? What are the minimum requirements in order to be able to access certain parts of the content and services provided over the Internet? The IAB is looking for short position papers on the following topics; however, this list is non-exhaustive and should be interpreted broadly: - Discussion of minimal requirements for meaningful Internet access that enable use of content and services provided over the Internet - Discussion of current inequalities in Internet access in various parts of the world - Measurements of content blocking, Internet shutdowns, or other events that impact Internet access - Detailed analysis of filtering and blocking techniques - Description and evaluation of circumvention techniques, including VPNs and application-level traffic diversion - Discussion and measurements of technologies that exacerbate the digital divide beyond connectivity - Threat modeling for when connectivity and circumvention are misaligned with jurisdictions and authorities Interested participants are invited to submit position papers on the workshop topics. There are no restrictions on the format. Participants can choose their preferred format, including Internet-Drafts, text- or word-based documents, or papers formatted similar as used by academic publication venues. Submission as PDF is preferred. Paper size is not limited, but brevity is encouraged. Interested participants who have published relevant academic papers may submit these as a position paper, optionally with a short abstract explaining their interest and the paper’s relevance to the workshop. The workshop itself will be focused on discussions based on the position paper topics received. All inputs submitted and considered relevant will be published on the workshop website. The organizers will issue invitations based on the submissions received. Sessions will be organized according to content, and not every accepted submission or invited attendee will have an opportunity to present; the intent is to foster an active discussion and not simply to have a sequence of presentations. A workshop report covering all submissions and the workshop discussion will be published afterwards. The workshop will be by invitation only. Those wishing to attend should submit a position paper to address the above topics and questions. Position papers from those not planning to attend the workshop themselves are also encouraged. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology, revolutionizing various industries, and its significance in Information Systems cannot be overstated. AI-powered systems have the potential to streamline operations, enhance decision-making processes, and drive innovation across organizations. From data analysis to automated processes, AI is reshaping the way we leverage information in the digital age. The relevance of AI in IS extends beyond internal operations. AI-powered predictive analytics enables organizations to forecast trends, anticipate customer needs, and optimize resource allocation. This empowers businesses to adapt swiftly to changing market dynamics, gain a competitive edge, and make proactive decisions. AI algorithms can also detect anomalies and patterns that indicate potential security breaches, contributing to robust cybersecurity measures in information systems. However, while acknowledging the benefits, it is essential to consider the ethical implications of AI in information systems. Ensuring data privacy, addressing bias in algorithms, and maintaining transparency are vital aspects that need to be carefully managed and regulated to foster trust and accountability. In addition to offering an exciting scientific program, CAiSE’24 will feature a best paper award, a journal special issue, and a PhD-thesis award: • Best Paper Award‚ prize EUR 1000 (sponsored by Springer) • A small selection of best papers will be invited to submit enhanced versions for consideration in a special issue of Elsevier Information Systems journal dedicated to this conference. • PhD-Thesis Award • Best PhD thesis of a past CAiSE Doctoral Consortium author (co-sponsored by the CAiSE Steering Committee and Springer) Papers should be submitted in PDF format. Submissions must conform to Springer‚ LNCS format and should not exceed 15 pages, including all text, figures, references, and appendices. Submissions not conforming to the LNCS format, exceeding 15 pages, or being obviously out of the scope of the conference, will be rejected without review. Three to five keywords characterizing the paper should be listed at the end of the abstract. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two program committee members and, if positively evaluated, by one additional program board member. The selected papers will be discussed among the paper reviewers online and during the program board meeting. As the review process is not blind, please indicate your name and affiliation on your submission. Accepted papers will be presented at CAiSE’24 and published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) conference proceedings. We invite three types of original and scientific papers. The type of submission must be indicated in the submission system. Each contribution should explicitly address the engineering or the operation of information systems, clearly identify the information systems problem addressed, the expected impact of the contribution to information system engineering or operation, and the research method used. We strongly advise authors to clearly emphasize these aspects in their paper, including the abstract. Technical papers describe original solutions (theoretical, methodological or conceptual) in the field of IS Engineering. A technical paper should clearly describe the situation or problem tackled, the relevant state of the art, the position or solution suggested and its potential‚ as well as demonstrate the benefits of the contribution through a rigorous evaluation. Empirical papers evaluate existing problem situations including problems encountered in practice, or validate proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e., by empirical studies, experiments, case studies, experience reports, simulations, etc. Scientific reflection on problems and practices in industry also falls into this category. The topic of the evaluation presented in the paper as well as its causal or logical properties must be clearly stated. The research method must be sound and appropriate. Exploratory papers describe completely new research positions or approaches, in order to face a generic situation arising because of new ICT tools, new kinds of activities, or new IS challenges. They must precisely describe the situation and demonstrate why current methods, tools, ways of reasoning, or meta-models are inadequate. They must also rigorously present their approach and demonstrate its pertinence and correctness in addressing the identified situation.
