The College of Information Studies (INFO) at the University of Maryland, College Park and the Department of Government and Politics (GVPT) in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) invite applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. This position is open to applicants from any fields within information and political sciences that apply data science concepts and methods in their work. INFO and GVPT particularly seek candidates whose scholarship and teaching interests address information science concepts and methodologies to study important social science problems in the broad field of government and politics. We encourage candidates to demonstrate how their research contributes toward social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the creation, management, and accessibility of information. The faculty member will have a joint appointment at INFO (75%) and GVPT (25%), with a tenure home in INFO. The faculty member will be expected to teach courses in both INFO and GVPT, as well as to contribute to teaching and service to the newly formed undergraduate Major in Social Data Science, which is a INFO-BSOS joint program. We seek a candidate who will build upon our record of educating information and political scientists committed to leadership, service, research, and innovative practice and impact. The faculty member will be expected to have a high-impact research agenda and to seek external funding for research. The faculty member will also teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, provide research advising to students at all levels, and engage in service to the profession and shared governance within the university. In particular candidates whose scholarship speaks to the following broad substantive topics are encouraged to apply: - Social media politics - Information disorder (misinformation, disinformation, etc.) - Online political and civic participation - Policy and governance for emerging technologies - Digital democracy and data justice - Data science for policy analysis - Role of political institutions in production and dissemination of information - Political and moral values of information systems - The political economy of information systems While these areas of expertise are of particular interest, candidates with expertise and interest in other relevant topics that apply data science methods are encouraged to apply. The effects of digital transformation on public management remain unclear, although it is apparent that obstacles to implementing change are shared. A continuing conundrum is the extent to which much of the field needs to be reappraised in terms of new hybrid forms and the multiple ways in which they are being addressed through inter-organisational and system interactions and scenarios for digital futures that seek to lever hybridity in public management. The various hybrid interfaces in digital governance and management cover a range of complex public, private and societal interactions and provide scope for the use of a range of theoretical frameworks. Theories that seek to explain variable progress towards digital government internationally, include cultural and political traditions and institutional analysis. Methods may include case studies, survey analysis, portal/website evaluation, and service integration measurement. Recommendations for graphic free software

Dear Telma Regarding your request for recommendations for free graphic software along with Scribus, I recommend Inkscape, a Free and open source vector graphics editor. The software is cross-platform on macOS, GNU/Linux and Windows operating systems https://inkscape.org/ Figma (and the like ) are substandard for many reasons, they also require an abundance of digital storage and processing power that has caused an explosion in wastefulness, which shows in things like ridiculous hardware requirements for computing even the most trivial tasks. With its metaphysical imaginaries of human-machine symbiosis, anthropomorphic robots and machine thinking, arguably oversized scientific claims and technological developments in this field have always raised concerns. What the current debate makes much more visible than previous attention cycles, though, is that contemporary AI companies and scientists dominate not only the discourse promoting AI’s prospects but also that on AI’s perils. From engineers at OpenAI to research pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, technologists and industry-based scientists increasingly articulate warnings that AI might cause serious and fundamental damage to societies. With this move, the already dominant players are now also occupying the space of public critique, yielding the risk that activism, social science, critical journalism and the arts are pushed even further to the margins of public and expert debates. Are we currently having the public controversies on AI that we should have, or is AI panic derailing us from actual and relevant concerns? How do we get to the controversies that we need and to the exploration and articulation of society-centered AI? Dear Colleagues: We are organizing a history of AI track at next year’s Human Choice and Computers (HCC) conference, which is organized by IFIP Technical Committee 9 (TC 9). The overall conference theme is “Humans, Technological Innovations and Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Consequences.” For 50 years, HCC has provided a forum for researchers who illuminate the role of technology choice in computing. As one of the member groups of TC 9, we are soliciting papers on the history of AI. More specifically, we are interested in how an international perspective can shed light on the current development and future directions of generative artificial intelligence. What were the most important developments related to today’s use of AI? How can international insights improve the historical understanding of AI? In what way did historical choices impact the development of how we define AI today? HCC solicits full conference papers for consideration (3,000 to 5,000 words); selected papers will be published by Springer in a proceedings volume in advance of the workshop. Reference recommendation for labor platform app-worker interaction

Dear AoIR members, I am a sociologist studying food delivery platform labor. Recently, I have been very interested in the relationship between delivery apps and the safety of delivery workers. These are my key research questions: 1. What cognitive/psychological states do delivery apps trigger, and 2. Do these psychological states increase occupational safety and health risks? I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for references from human computer interaction/human-AI interaction experts in the AoIR community regarding my research questions.
