Bowling Green State University VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Assistant Professor College of Arts and Sciences School of Media and Communication Position Summary: The School of Media and Communication invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Strategic Communication. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, in-person position starting August 2024. School of Media and Communication The School of Media and Communication (SMC) is one of 17 academic units in the College of Arts and Sciences. The College strives to foster and sustain an engaging culture of discovery, creativity, teaching, learning, and collaboration, enriched by a diversity of experiences and perspectives. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute, through their teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service, to our efforts to meet the challenge of achieving inclusive excellence in our academic community. The College takes a cohort-based approach to faculty success, providing resources and support within the Dean’s Office and through collaboration with Arts and Sciences departments and schools, leadership teams in other colleges, and university-serving partners such as the Center for Faculty Excellence. Graduate students can pursue MA or PhD degrees in Media and Communication. The Ph.D. program has 28 students in 3 emphasis areas: Critical Media and Rhetoric, Interpersonal Communication, Media Audiences and Processes. Essential Functions: • Teach courses at the undergraduate, master's, or Ph.D. levels in advertising, public relations, or strategic communication • Develop a robust research agenda that leads to publications in high-quality media and communication journals; actively seek external research support as appropriate; • Advise students at all levels, including master’s theses and doctoral dissertations; and • Provide service to the school, college, university, and the profession. Minimum Qualifications: • Ph.D. in mass communication, strategic communication, or a related field (e.g., advertising, public relations). ABDs are eligible to apply, but all requirements for the doctoral degree must be met by August 2024; • Record of publication in peer-reviewed research publications or high-quality industry publications; • Experience teaching communication courses at undergraduate level (including teaching assistant experience) in areas of advertising, public relations, and strategic communication on-campus or online modalities; and • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices that support students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Preferred Qualifications • 3 years or more professional experience in strategic communication or related field; • Previous teaching experience at the university level as instructor of record; • Evidence of effective teaching in one or more of the areas: audience analytics and media measurement, social media, programmatic and computational advertising, recommendation algorithms, non-profit strategic communication, organizational communication, and native advertising • Evidence of an active research agenda and publications on the future of strategic communication, such as the impact of technology on the field; • Experience in interdisciplinary teaching or research collaborations; and • Experience in seeking external funding to support research. The College of Information Studies (INFO) at the University of Maryland, College Park and the Department of Government and Politics (GVPT) in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) invite applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. This position is open to applicants from any fields within information and political sciences that apply data science concepts and methods in their work. INFO and GVPT particularly seek candidates whose scholarship and teaching interests address information science concepts and methodologies to study important social science problems in the broad field of government and politics. We encourage candidates to demonstrate how their research contributes toward social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the creation, management, and accessibility of information. The faculty member will have a joint appointment at INFO (75%) and GVPT (25%), with a tenure home in INFO. The faculty member will be expected to teach courses in both INFO and GVPT, as well as to contribute to teaching and service to the newly formed undergraduate Major in Social Data Science, which is a INFO-BSOS joint program. We seek a candidate who will build upon our record of educating information and political scientists committed to leadership, service, research, and innovative practice and impact. The faculty member will be expected to have a high-impact research agenda and to seek external funding for research. The faculty member will also teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, provide research advising to students at all levels, and engage in service to the profession and shared governance within the university. The effects of digital transformation on public management remain unclear, although it is apparent that obstacles to implementing change are shared. A continuing conundrum is the extent to which much of the field needs to be reappraised in terms of new hybrid forms and the multiple ways in which they are being addressed through inter-organisational and system interactions and scenarios for digital futures that seek to lever hybridity in public management. The various hybrid interfaces in digital governance and management cover a range of complex public, private and societal interactions and provide scope for the use of a range of theoretical frameworks. Theories that seek to explain variable progress towards digital government internationally, include cultural and political traditions and institutional analysis. Methods may include case studies, survey analysis, portal/website evaluation, and service integration measurement. Recommendations for graphic free software

Dear Telma Regarding your request for recommendations for free graphic software along with Scribus, I recommend Inkscape, a Free and open source vector graphics editor. The software is cross-platform on macOS, GNU/Linux and Windows operating systems https://inkscape.org/ Figma (and the like ) are substandard for many reasons, they also require an abundance of digital storage and processing power that has caused an explosion in wastefulness, which shows in things like ridiculous hardware requirements for computing even the most trivial tasks. The conference will hold keynotes, panels and interventions on the topic of AI controversies. Abstracts should be submitted no later than 30 October 2023. CONFERENCE Shifting AI Controversies Prompts, Provocations & Problematisations for Society-Centered AI 29 & 30 January 2024 Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), Germany https://www.hiig.de/en/cfc-shifting-ai-controversies/ Controversies about AI abound, especially since ChatGPT took over the Internet by storm, becoming the most popular applications in the Web’s history within only a few months. The current excitement about the perils and prospects of general purpose AI applications like ChatGPT is only the most recent wave of public interest in the long history of “artificial intelligence” (AI). With its metaphysical imaginaries of human-machine symbiosis, anthropomorphic robots and machine thinking, arguably oversized scientific claims and technological developments in this field have always raised concerns. What the current debate makes much more visible than previous attention cycles, though, is that contemporary AI companies and scientists dominate not only the discourse promoting AI’s prospects but also that on AI’s perils. From engineers at OpenAI to research pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, technologists and industry-based scientists increasingly articulate warnings that AI might cause serious and fundamental damage to societies. With this move, the already dominant players are now also occupying the space of public critique, yielding the risk that activism, social science, critical journalism and the arts are pushed even further to the margins of public and expert debates. Are we currently having the public controversies on AI that we should have, or is AI panic derailing us from actual and relevant concerns? How do we get to the controversies that we need and to the exploration and articulation of society-centered AI?
