Dear colleagues, Happy to share this posting for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in my department: The Department of Communication Arts in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in *Critical Digital Media and Design* beginning July 1, 2024. The Department of Communication Arts, located in a research-intensive university, is committed to program objectives <https://uwaterloo.ca/communication-arts/about-our-department> ( https://uwaterloo.ca/communication-arts/about-our-department) providing students with lifelong capacities 1) to examine agency and implication; 2) to support the development of critical and creative competencies; and 3) to encourage a language and imagination for the public good. The department has undergraduate programs in Communication Studies, Communication Arts & Design Practice, and Theatre & Performance, and a minor in Digital Arts Communication open to students across the university. These attractive and growing programs currently serve approximately 200 majors and 150 minors, and the department is in the process of proposing a practice-based graduate MA program. In addition, the Department delivers approximately 130 sections of communication courses to students from several different programs at the University. Presently these sections are offered to students in the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Math. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a research field such as Communication, Informatics, Design, Digital Humanities, or a related field, a strong research agenda, potentially combined with a practitioner profile, and demonstrated excellence in teaching. They will support current departmental programs by teaching primarily undergraduate Digital Arts Communication (DAC) classes, will help integrate digital arts practice into courses across the department, and will contribute to the department’s proposed MA program. In particular, the successful candidate will be able to teach DAC 309 (User Experience Design) as well as other Digital Arts Communication courses such as DAC 201 (Designing Digital Media), and DAC 305 (Designing and Evaluating Digital Games). A demonstrated pedagogical commitment to theoretically-informed practice, student-centered learning, and engagement of broad public concerns is required. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in critical humanistic and design approaches to user experience (UX). This includes approaches to user-centered research and design based on principles of anti-racism, feminism, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility to interrogate the perspectives, assumptions, methods, and artifacts of UX Design. Candidates with expertise in critical race, Indigenous, dis/ability, trans, feminist, queer, sustainable, and/or Marxist methods and approaches to the practice and study of UX Design specifically and critical digital design more broadly are preferred. Approaches to digital media arts and production as communication are especially welcome, as is having a high degree of technological literacy, the ability to secure external funding, collaborative potential with other faculty across the department and university, the ability to engage in outreach activities with industry in their area, and the ability to contribute to the growth of the department. The salary range for this position at the rank of Assistant Professor is $95,000.00 to $125,000.00. Duties include research, teaching, and academic service. Dear all, My name is Christian Howard-Sukhil, and I am the Text & Data Mining Legal Fellow at a non-profit organization called Authors Alliance <https://www.authorsalliance.org/>. Authors Alliance has received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to learn about how academic researchers are using Text and Data Mining (TDM) in their research. TDM is known by several other names in the academy, including topic modeling, distant reading, text mining for Digital Humanities, and textual analysis and data mining. The project examines how academics engage in TDM for their research as well as difficulties (especially legal issues) that such researchers face in conducting their studies. As part of these efforts, we are seeking information from TDM practitioners and support staff to help us understand how they engage in TDM, barriers that they have faced in conducting such research, and ways in which their TDM research could be improved. Dear colleagues, We invite contributions to a special issue *Public participation amidst hostility: when the uninvited shape matters of collective concern *to be published in the *Social Inclusion* journal. Please find more details below and, if you are interested, contact the guest editors for a draft of the Introduction text. *Topic:* Ways of taking part in formulating and addressing matters of shared concern are diverse. The practices people employ to engage in shaping societal orders go far beyond organized formats such as citizen juries or co-production sessions, where questions and tasks are, to a large extent, pre-set. Particularly creative practices emerge in situations when participation is not invited, or discouraged, or even met with hostility. Such situations are not exceptional because even in established democracies pockets of exclusion exist. For this special issue, we challenge authors to consider, among others, how participation is made possible in situations of hostility to participation: What are the consequences of participatory practices under adverse circumstances? How can we understand and theorize the diversity of forms of participation in contemporary societies? Media studies syllabus / teaching ideas?

Dear friends and colleagues, I am teaching some new undergraduate Media Studies courses this year. I was wondering whether anyone would be willing to share their materials or syllabi. As there is probably a lot of overlap between the courses that AoIR members teach, it would be interesting to hear what other people do: Is there a particular textbook that is useful? Is there a set of core readings that is typically assigned in these types of classes? Any ideas for activities that work well in lecture-style settings for undergrad students? Here are the courses that I'm working on: Introduction to New Media: This wide-ranging course covers the contemporary social, economic, and political implications of the Internet. Key topics include digital politics, the risks of AI, data ethics, and misinformation. The aim is to provide students with an understanding of the main contemporary issues regarding the societal implications of the internet while framing these with core theories from Media Studies, Communication, and Information Studies. Economic implications of the Internet: This course covers the impact of the internet on various sectors, including but not limited to, retail, banking, finance, and travel. It covers both practical changes and shifts in norms and theory engendered by the internet. It covers the main ways in which companies adopt and use digital technologies. I’m still in the very early process of designing these courses, so would be very happy for any input so that it doesn’t feel as though I am reinventing the wheel. Digital data access has survived in an uncomfortable and unpredictable flux for years, but the most recent wave of policy changes may well be existential. Consider the following developments from the past 12 months: - Elon Musk has eliminated free access to Twitter’s API, and the only academically useful paid tiers far exceed most researchers’ budgets. - Musk has also demanded that Decahose users delete all Twitter data acquired under previous agreements–whether this demand will be extended to Academic API users is currently unknown. - Reddit has denied access to its API for Pushshift, a popular service used by researchers to collect Reddit data. Popular Reddit app Apollo is facing API charges of $1.7M per month to continue operating. - TikTok released a new API for researchers, which among other things requires them “to regularly refresh TikTok Research API Data at least every fifteen (15) days, and delete data that is not available from the TikTok Research API at the time of each refresh.” - Crowdtangle, Meta’s researcher tool for acquiring data from Facebook and Instagram, still exists as of this writing. But rumors of its imminent demise have been reported in multiple reputable outlets. If your research pipeline has been caught in the crossfire of these and similar developments, this one-day Post-API Conference is for you. We’re looking to convene some of the brightest minds working on these issues across disciplines to help identify the most viable solutions and alternatives. To encourage informal conversation between participants, the conference will adopt a nontraditional structure. We seek to hire colleagues who will conduct research on and teach about IM technologies (augmented, virtual, and extended reality – AR/VR/XR) and/or digital gaming spaces through the lenses of strategic communication, design, marketing, and their impacts and effects on users and culture. IM sits at the intersection of a variety of emerging interactive and immersive social, entertainment, and communication technologies, ranging from artificial intelligence to live streaming, that require rethinking the professional and social boundaries of media industries, practitioners, etc. For example, the intersection of AI and Web3 platforms use XR technology, require novel interfaces and modes of communication, and are currently being explored to a large degree in massively multiplayer online games like Fortnite and Roblox. Hires would bring the following key contributions to our faculty: 1. Expertise in theories and concepts pertinent to immersive media and game studies in regard to fields of communication, design, marketing, human-computer interaction, journalism, or affiliated fields. 2. A related specialty, such as the study of identity, digital cultures, emerging media industries and economics (XR, cryptocurrency), e-sports, fan studies, digital asset production, content creation, human-machine communication, strategic communication, and media psychology. 3. A capacity to teach in our new online Immersive Media Communication master’s program, our new Game Studies minor, and/or required coursework at the SOJC, such as media ethics, gender, media and diversity, and introduction to media studies. This hire will join our growing body of scholars studying and teaching immersive media and game studies, including the launch of the Immersive Media Communications program in the fall of 2023, which will be conducted in collaboration with the Oregon Reality (OR) Lab and the Immersive Media Lab (IML), both of which focus on experiential learning and research regarding the ethical use of immersive media and their social, cultural and professional impacts. These positions would also directly serve the new Game Studies minor, which focuses on training media professionals in the culture and communication of games. These positions would have important synergies with the Strategic Communication MA program and the Public Relations and Advertising areas, with interest likely from MMJ and Journalism as well. Faculty members would also ideally strengthen SOJC’s ties to other units on campus, including existing collaborations with CAS (e.g., the annual Data|Media|Digital Graduate Symposium), the campus-wide New Media and Culture Certificate program for graduate students, the ethics minor in philosophy, and UO’s Data Sciences Initiative, through a practical orientation to ethical issues in society. Department or Program Summary The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,450 undergraduates and 150 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., and Ph.D., as well as minors in Media Studies and Science Communication. The School also includes an interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and interdisciplinary minors in Multimedia and Native Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 125 individuals as faculty and staff, more than 50 graduate employees, and approximately 50 student employees. Founded in 1916, the SOJC is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation. The School recently opened the Experience Hub, bringing a range of new production facilities for social media, VR/AR, podcasting, and broadcasting. Our public relations program earned the Public Relations Society of America’s Certification in Education for Academic Programs in Public Relations. Preferred Qualifications • Strong commitment to contributing to a culture of inclusive teaching; and evidence of valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion. • Two years of professional experience relevant to immersive communication. • Ability to teach across the required graduate curriculum and within at least one of the following additional graduate programs: Master’s in Strategic Communication, Master’s in Advertising and Brand Responsibility, Master’s in Immersive Media Communication, Communication and Media Studies Master’s and Ph.D. • An interest in Master’s and doctoral student mentorship.
