Challenging underlying assumptions of both the nature of this relationship and typical methodological approaches, Rosana Pinheiro-Machado and João C. Magalhães discuss their own important and innovative approaches to studying these messy and deeply ambivalent spaces. First, Dr. Pinheiro-Machado discusses the radicalisation of some segments of precarious workers in Brazil. As informal workers start enterprising on digital platforms, her work investigates the extent to which these technological shifts impact political radicalisation. Is this political identification a reflection of predisposed political views that were already latent previously? Or are the digital platforms pushing them to the far right? Based on a combination of intensive long-term ethnography and extensive computational approaches, Dr. Pinheiro-Machado will explore push and pull factors that enable the encounter between precarious workers and authoritarian populism. Next, Dr. Magalhães explores the messy relationship between digital platforms, democracy, and authoritarianism. Early celebratory accounts were replaced by fears of ‘filter bubbles’ and induced polarization, which have been however constantly contradicted by empirical research. Dr. Magalhães suggests that this hazy picture is largely the consequence of a misleading assumption, one that takes exposure and consumption of “information” as the most important aspect whereby platforms affect the formation of political subjects. Reminiscent of older, deterministic views of media’s social power, and closely associated with the ‘marketplace of ideas’ paradigm, this assumption tends to flatten human agency and ignore the multiple registers, experiences, and inequalities through which political phenomena happens. Dr. Magalhães argues that an ethnographic sensibility towards the messy reality of how ordinary people imagine and engage with digital networks is needed if we are to develop a more realistic understanding of how the Internet transformed our political lives. Announcement - launching accessible legal training for influencers

Dear all, Dr Catalina Goanta (University of Utrecht<https://www.uu.nl/staff/ECGoanta>) and I (Sophie Bishop, University of Leeds<https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/media/staff/5858/sophie-bishop>) wanted to bring to your attention an event that may be of interest for those working on influencer culture, content creation or digital advertising. Together with the European Commission, we have drawn from our research expertise in law and influencer culture to co-develop the first European legal training for influencers on the topic of consumer protection. We have helped to develop an approachable (even fun!) range of easy-to-understand resources aimed at explaining relevant regulation to influencers, their management and agency teams, brands, advertisers and audiences. The Hub includes short, animated explainer videos; helpful checklists for best practices like advertising disclosures; legal briefs and links to other important national and international authorities. We’re a relatively young Springer journal (since 2020), that was first published in 2015 through the Centre for Applied Youth Research, at the University of Tasmania, Australia. The journal has recently been indexed by Scopus: Q1 for cultural studies, Q2 for social science / sociology / anthropology, and Q3 for education. We welcome submissions from researchers within and beyond academia, across the research – policy – practice – theory spectrum on issues that concern youth and young adults. The journal is interdisciplinary and welcomes papers from disciplines that engage with the diversity and complexity of young people’s lives, as well as the social, cultural, economic and political conditions that young people and their communities experience. It aims to be of relevance to researchers, students, practitioners and policy-makers internationally. Hi everyone, I would like to invite interested students to an information session about our Ph.D. program at the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst. We expect to admit seven students with full funding for Fall 2024, and *the application deadline is January 2, 2024*. The information session will be over Zoom and take place on Friday, November 3, 2023, from 10 AM to 11 AM (EST). On Monday, 23 October from 11AM-12:30PM EDT/UTC+4: "Building Equitable and Sustainable Game Development Education" Workshop led by Kenzie Gordon (University of Alberta), Dr. Sean Gouglas (University of Alberta), Dr. Alison Harvey (York University), Vishal Sooknananl (Western University), Dr. Johanna Weststar (Western University), and Dr. Jennifer Whitson (University of Waterloo). With recent waves of layoffs, high-profile workplace harassment cases, and a notoriously short career length for gender minorities and people of colour, the transition of new workers into the game industry involves navigating a spate of barriers to equity and success that have been understudied in academic research. The First Three Years is an ongoing longitudinal study of graduates of game programs in Canada and the United States, following the journey of 207 students as they move into the game industry. In this workshop, our research team will summarise the primary challenges students have identified in their game programs. This summary includes equity and diversity issues inherent in common curricular practices such as the efficacy of capstone courses and internships, the inclusion of crunch-like practices in the classroom, the systematic failure to inform students of actual workplace conditions, and the mismatch between student preparation and industry hiring practices. Afterwards, participants will address whether/how these problems manifest in their own institutions, and what solutions might improve equity outcomes for students seeking careers in games.? 2. On Tuesday, 31 October from 3-4PM EDT/UTC+4: "The Case for Paratopian Design" lecture by Dr Rilla Khaled (Concordia University). And what if we could do so through interactions with familiar digital interfaces set in alternative presents and near futures? The work I will discuss sits at the intersection between the design traditions of speculative and critical design on the one hand, and the philosophies and best practices of game design, playful media and interaction design on the other. It turns out, though, that an arranged marriage between these traditions produces unusual offspring. In this talk, grounded in examples including outsourcing religious tolerance to technological solutions, Indigenous Hawaiians undertaking space travel, matrimonial websites from the near future, and flirtatious AI chatbot therapists, I make the case for paratopian design, which is neither utopian nor dystopian, but proposes paradigm shifts that invite us to reconceptualise and reconsider the building blocks of "here" & "now".

The 20th International Conference on Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things (DCOSS-IoT 2024) will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The conference is always co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and by the IEEE Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP). The conference was previously known as DCOSS. Starting in 2023, the event is broadening its scope beyond sensor networks to include smart systems in general and the Internet of Things (IoT). The updated name is "Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things" (DCOSS-IoT). In the last few years, we have witnessed significant growth in the use of IoT and distributed sensor systems in several application areas, including smart transportation, smart energy systems, smart homes and buildings, smart healthcare, and environmental monitoring. For smart sensor systems to truly become useful and pervasive, we need to address several research challenges, including the tight integration of sensing and machine intelligence, reliable and efficient networking, interoperability and scalability, the need for dependable autonomy, interaction with humans, and important aspects of security, privacy and trust. Call for participation: public interest AI networking event at AoIR 2023

Dear Fellow Researchers, We would like to invite anyone attending AoIR 2023 and interested in the topic of public interest tech/AI to a transatlantic networking event that we will be hosting (as a pre-conference workshop) on October 18th. We—the research group on public interest AI at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin <https://www.hiig.de/en/project/public-interest-ai/>—have been focused on ways to develop and implement AI in order to serve the public interest. We have also been seeing an increase in the number of projects that aim to do just this. However, many researchers working on this topic don’t know each other or these other projects yet.
