Special Issue: Message from the Editors Bullying, both offline and online, continues to pose significant challenges to the wellbeing and development of students in educational settings. As these behaviours remain a problem in the school environment, it becomes increasingly important to explore the vital role that teachers play in addressing and mitigating the problem (Brochado et al., 2017). Traditional bullying, involving physical, verbal, and relational harassment, and cyberbullying, which takes place through digital communication channels, both have far-reaching consequences for students' mental and emotional health, academic performance, classroom concentration, and overall school climate (Betts et al., 2017; Boulton & Macaulay, 2023; Mark & Ratliffe, 2011; Wolke et al., 2017). Teachers are uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact in combatting these behaviours, both in and out of the school environment (Myers & Cowie, 2019; Veenstra et al., 2014; Yoon & Bauman, 2014). Despite this, research suggests that teachers feel unprepared to address bullying in the school environment, with inconsistent management strategies and views (Campbell et al., 2019; Macaulay et al., 2018; 2021). These different perceptions create challenges for the reporting and addressing of these incidents, understanding the most pressing correlates and consequences, and ascertaining how best to proceed with anti‐bullying interventions that directly or indirectly involve educators. The nature of bullying has become more dynamic, nuanced, and difficult to identify/monitor, and so schools should take a whole‐school approach to prevent different acts of bullying (Valle et al., 2020). Such an approach requires the endorsement across all parts of the school team – for example, teachers, senior members of staff, and leaders – working together with the wider community to create an overarching supportive school climate. This special issue will aim to present recent research evidence on the role of teachers in preventing and intervening in traditional bullying and cyberbullying. The aim of this special issue is to bring together and spotlight research that: - Examines the contextual and situational factors that constrain or support teachers in their efforts to prevent and intervene in traditional bullying and cyberbullying incidents. - Details the optimal strategies teachers endorse to manage bullying and cyberbullying situations across different educational settings and populations of students. - Examines the role and views of pre‐service and in‐service teachers on the prevention and intervention of traditional bullying and cyberbullying. - Illuminates how teachers can best work in concert with other major stakeholders to attenuate these issues. Research focusing on other clearly related subtopics may be considered, and will be evaluated based on feasibility, merit, and overall fit with the goals of the special issue and journal as a whole. The call is specifically for short case studies of research that involves digital ethnographic methods. Devin— *** *Call for short chapters: edited book, Practicing Digital Ethnography * *Routledge invites submissions of short chapters for an edited volume, Practicing Digital Ethnography.* Are you engaged in—or have you recently undertaken—ethnographic fieldwork that intersects with digital technologies? Are you using digital technologies to present your work in a novel way? If so, please consider submitting a fieldwork reflection to the upcoming edited volume, *Practicing Digital Ethnography,* under contract with Routledge*. *We are looking for interdisciplinary case studies, anecdotes, and methodological interventions drawn from current research in the realm of digital ethnography. *About the Book * *Practicing Digital Ethnography* seeks to introduce undergraduate students (and the general public) to the practices, theories, and complications of ethnographic fieldwork in the contemporary digital landscape. The book will be based in rigorous theory and method but written in approachable language. In addition to its main chapters—authored by a mixture of established and junior scholars—this volume will include short, *2,000 word “Case Studies”* to provide examples in a real-world fieldwork setting. Because the volume should reflect digital research in a global sense, scholars and work representing marginalized cultural or geographic groups are especially encouraged to contribute. And because these case studies should reflect contemporary innovative research, we also particularly invite graduate students engaged in research and early career academics, as well as digital practitioners from outside the academy, to submit abstracts. These can include ethnographic fieldwork of many types: - “offline” cultural use of Internet technologies; - “online” meaning-making in digital spaces; - ethnography within virtual worlds; - the effects of wearable digital technologies; - ethical conundrums faced researching the digital; - studies using big data to analyze cultural practices; - studies analyzing linguistic and semiotic patterns of Internet use; - research engaging with multiple intersecting digital platforms; - research with/about AI and/or algorithmic logics; - work using GIS technologies to track social practices; - ethnographic video games and/or interactive narratives; - ethnographic work as/on digital art or installations; - any of the multitude of other ways the ethnographic and digital can inform each other. *Submission Procedures:* 1. For Stefano Harney and Fred Moten, study is a form of sociality. It is a meeting with, a brushing against, a bumping up of people, texts, ideas and things. It is the creation of a mutual and unpayable debt; a debt that is 'without count, without interest, without repayment.' As Moten states: study is what you do with other people. It’s talking and walking around > with other people, working, dancing, suffering, some irreducible > convergence of all three, held under the name of speculative practice. This event is an exercise in precisely this kind of practice. It invites writers, researchers, activists, artists and others together for a day of speculative thinking, talking, listening and experimentation on the topic of AI, race, and art. Terms like ‘AI’ are already associated with speculation—speculative fictions, speculative profits, speculative job losses, speculative risks and harms. Art also finds value in its connection to the speculative—speculative practice, speculative experiments, speculative funding, speculative futures. And critical work on race also productively turns to speculation when the empirical facts of inequity and injustice fail to create social change—speculative world-making and speculative methods to realise racial justice. This event combines these different strands of speculation, holding together disparate threads that may gesture to abstract and indeterminate futures but are all irreducibly historical, political, and situated. It focuses on AI, race and art because these are topics that need to be studied, that must be studied because they have implications on such things as subjectivity, politics, inequality, and aesthetics. It takes the form of a ‘Study-in’, that is, a temporary school that will interrogate AI and race, developing new methods and approaches to study that draw from and feed into artistic methods and strategies. It begins from the proposition that the challenge of understanding race in the contemporary moment requires responses that are equal parts creative, critical, technical, and collective. Through the process of collective study, the event will also build what might be called a speculative curriculum. Here, we take the traces of what Harney and Moten describe as the 'empty shell of what used to be called education' to cobble together a resource that can exceed the time and place of the ‘Study-in’ as an event and can be used by ourselves and others as an occasion for future study. The event is motivated by questions such as: - How are bodies classified, recognised, and operationalised by Artifical Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) systems that are situated within colonial and imperial histories and contexts? - How are group-based differentials—such as race, gender, sexuality—shaped by data-driven technologies and AI systems? - How do these technologies move us beyond understanding race and gender as either purely biological or purely cultural? - And how might contemporary artistic practice help us to experiment, challenge, trouble, blow apart, and piece back together entanglements with technology, embodiment, and difference? Dear Colleagues, We invite full paper submissions for a special issue of Journal of Information Technology & Politics (JITP) on new epistemologies and imaginaries in conspiracy theory scholarship. This special issue aims to push the boundaries of conspiracy studies beyond extant work, which primarily focuses on the alt-right, health, and Western understandings of conspiracy (Halafoff et al., 2022; Mahl et al., 2022, 2022; Marwick et al., 2022). We answer calls to expand understandings of conspiracy beyond Western epistemology (Mahl et al., 2022) to contribute to a fuller conceptualization of “conspiracy-believing” (Parmigiani, 2021). We examine the troubling content and implications of conspiracies in a manifold manner while acknowledging their potentially harmful impact. We invite those interested in conspiracy as it applies to epistemology, knowledge production, technological artifacts, gender/race/class, and reception, inter alia. Importantly, papers must engage with technology and political communication scholarship in some form. Special Issue Editors: Zelly C. Martin, Inga K. Trauthig, Alice E. Marwick, Samuel C. Woolley Scope: Conspiracy theories are increasingly present in mainstream American political discourse, from those around Covid-19 to the idea that political forces conspired to “steal” the election from former President Trump. While researchers from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds (psychology, communication, history, political science and so forth) have taken up conspiracy theories as an object of study, many contemporary scholars have focused on right-wing conspiracies, such as Stop the Steal (DeCook & Forestal, 2022), QAnon (Bloom & Moskalenko, 2021), and the Great Replacement Theory (Ekman, 2022). Most recently, researchers have interrogated the blurry boundaries between left- and right-leaning conspiracy adherents on topics like anti-vaccination and spirituality (Chia et al., 2021; Griera et al., 2022). A key element of current scholarship on conspiracies is the extent to which social media facilitates their spread (Enders et al., 2021; Theocharis et al., 2021) and/or allows conspiratorial knowledge-production to thrive (Marwick & Partin, 2022). Although the stereotype of “the conspiracy theorist” is a “white, working-class, middle-aged man” (Drochon, 2018, p. 344) people from all identity groups believe and produce conspiracies (Bost, 2018). For American communities of color, though, conspiracy theories may be a natural reaction to the invalidation of their embodied experiences (Bogart et al., 2021; Dozono, 2021). The same could be said of other marginalized groups in America, such as queer folks and women (Ngai, 2001). In what ways is “conspiracy-believing” a response to feeling displaced in the public sphere, and perhaps even an attempt to reconfigure a sense of community and recognition (Parmigiani, 2021)? What might researchers learn by rethinking conspiracism? What particular threats do conspiracy theories pose when they are crafted and/or believed by those from marginalized communities? How has the internet contributed to the fringe becoming mainstream? How does this impact and/or relate to contemporary political developments? We invite papers that engage with the following questions: * * What avenues of conspiracy are understudied when we prioritize the “loudest” conspiracy theories? * * What can we learn from interdisciplinary research on conspiracy? * * How do conspiracy theory beliefs stem from embodied experience? * * What are the boundaries of knowledge-production that we encounter when we demarcate conspiracy from disinformation and from embodied experience? * * Which democratic dangers stem from conspiracies? Dear all, Please find below a call for presentations including some information on our first seminar in the project Absence of information in decision-making processes (ABSENCE). Best wishes, Sille Call for Presentations: Common sense for humans and machines. Making decisions in the absence of information Seminar on December 7-8, 2023 at University of Copenhagen Artificial intelligence, deep neural networks, and machine learning systems all make use of data, lots of data. But what about the data or information that is not present? The absent? People make everyday decisions, while lacking information about the options and their outcomes. To do that, we engage abductive inference (taking the best guess). This type of thinking is often referred to as common sense and it works for humans. But what about machines? Can we make algorithms use human-level common sense? Should we? At this seminar, we will be discussing what we can learn from human intelligence, rationality and types of decision-making, and how this knowledge can be used in developing algorithmic decision-making. Specifically, we will be focusing on the productive force of absence in decision-making processes. Keynotes: Associate Prof. Kira Vrist Rønn (University of Southern Denmark) and Prof. Michael P. Lynch (University of Connecticut). *** Last Call for Workshop Proposals *** 36th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE'24) June 3-7, 2024, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://cyprusconferences.org/caise2024/ (*** Submission Deadline: October 13, 2023 AoE ***) CAiSE is a well-established, highly visible conference series on Advanced Information Systems (IS) Engineering. It covers all relevant topics in the area, including methodologies and approaches for IS engineering, innovative platforms, architectures and technologies, and engineering of specific kinds of IS. CAiSE conferences also have the tradition of hosting workshops in related fields. Workshops are intended to focus on particular topics and provide ample room for discussions of new ideas and developments. CAiSE 2024, the 36th edition of the CAiSE series, invites proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the main conference, related to the CAiSE topics, covering new emerging topics and targeting innovative papers in special focus areas. Prospective workshop organisers should specify whether they plan an event with a presentation-oriented track, a discussion-oriented track, or both. Presentation-oriented track This track focuses on accepted papers with presentations followed by Q&A sessions, akin to conferences. The proceedings of these workshops are intended to be published in a joint volume in the Springer LNBIP series. Submissions must  conform to the Springer LNCS/LNBIP format and should  not exceed 12 pages. According to the Springer standards, the overall acceptance rate cannot exceed 45%-50%. Discussion-oriented track This track emphasizes discussions facilitated by paper presentations revolving around novel ideas and early-stage research. Since the main criterion for paper acceptance in such workshops is relevance and potential for raising discussion, they are not expected to have their proceedings in the Springer LNBIP volume. The edition of a joint proceedings volume next to the LNBIP one for the discussion-oriented track is underway. Proceedings shall be submitted to CEUR-WS.org for online publication. Details on this aspect will be provided separately. Proposal submission Workshop proposals should be submitted via EasyChair at the following address:  https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=caise2024  Please select the Author role and the CAiSE 2024 Workshops track. Prior contact with the workshop chairs (caise2024-workshops(a)easychair.org) is encouraged. The organizer(s) of approved workshops will be responsible for advertising their workshop, eliciting high-quality submissions, organizing the reviewing process of their workshop’s papers according to the principles and guidelines of CAiSE, and collecting camera-ready copies of accepted papers (verifying that they comply with the formatting rules). Organizers (including co-organizers) are expected to attend their entire workshop. Detailed instructions for workshop proposers The proposal (up to 1000 words) should cover the following points: • Workshop title, duration (1 day or 2 days), preferred date (3-4 June 2024) • Workshop type (presentation-oriented or discussion-oriented, or both). • Information on the organizers (PC chairs, other organizers who will be present at the workshop or are otherwise involved, including the person responsible for web presence and communication). Please include names, addresses, and affiliations, indicating the main responsible person. The submission should include a one-paragraph biographical sketch for each organizer, describing relevant qualifications and experience. Please specify at least one PC chair. PC chairs will not be allowed to submit papers to the workshop, but other organizers (who will have no oversight over the review process) are encouraged to do so. • Purpose: What are the main goals of the workshop? Please list the workshop topics. How does the focus of the workshop differ from the main conference? How does the focus of the workshop differ from other potential CAiSE events? (Proponents are advised to look at the workshops and working conferences held at CAiSE 2022 and CAiSE 2023 and differentiate your scope from theirs.) • Organization of the workshop: Specify the type of contributions, distribution into sessions, type of sessions, etc. Mention if you plan to have any keynote speaker (please note that the conference organization will not cover fees, travel expenses, accommodation and registration costs of keynote speakers). From augmented reality (AR) games to virtual reality (VR) surgery to the “metaverse,” the technology is proliferating across different aspects of life. Companies, local governments, national governments, and supranational organizations are creating XR development—and, occasionally, regulation—plans, with goals varying by body and location. For instance, the Chinese government issued an Action Plan on VR, while individual cities are developing metaverse plans, and recently, the European Commission held three Citizens’ Panels on “virtual worlds” to draft recommendations for a European Commission action. Meta is launching “Metaverse Academies” in France and Saudi Arabia, while Nigeria hosted an XR storytelling event showcasing African XR creators. While most XR development is concentrated in a few countries, its use and impacts will be global. Despite this, most analyses of the potential impacts of XR focus on the American and European contexts. This not only overlooks several of the major XR development powerhouses, but also how XR technologies and experiences will have global impacts, including on human rights and the ways we interact with each other. This Topical Collection aims to address how XR’s impacts will be understood in different cultural contexts. While researching emerging technologies involves some amount of prediction, the rich science-fiction tradition surrounding XR promotes often baseless speculation. In order to promote XR as a topic of legitimate academic discourse, this Topical Collection welcomes clearheaded analyses of how XR will impact education, health, socializing, and work, especially those that consider under-addressed topics and locations, as well as explorations of the implications of XR across different philosophical traditions. Topics that could be addressed include but are not limited to include: - The role of XR in shaping diverse educational practices and pedagogies. - The applications and impact of XR in healthcare, especially for overlooked conditions and populations. - What impacts XR may have on mental and physical health, both positive and negative. - The social implications of XR, especially as regards connectivity and dislocation. - How XR may impact the future of work, labor relations, and practices. - What sociotechnical imaginaries of XR are being forwarded by under-studied entities. - The philosophical implications of the role and nature of XR in our societies, particularly those that foreground non-Western perspectives. - How the “metaverse” is defined and developed in different contexts. - The cultural implications of XR adoption, especially as regards under-represented locations and communities. - Ethical challenges of widespread XR use. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology, revolutionizing various industries, and its significance in Information Systems cannot be overstated. AI-powered systems have the potential to streamline operations, enhance decision-making processes, and drive innovation across organizations. From data analysis to automated processes, AI is reshaping the way we leverage information in the digital age. The relevance of AI in IS extends beyond internal operations. AI-powered predictive analytics enables organizations to forecast trends, anticipate customer needs, and optimize resource allocation. This empowers businesses to adapt swiftly to changing market dynamics, gain a competitive edge, and make proactive decisions. AI algorithms can also detect anomalies and patterns that indicate potential security breaches, contributing to robust cybersecurity measures in information systems. However, while acknowledging the benefits, it is essential to consider the ethical implications of AI in information systems. Ensuring data privacy, addressing bias in algorithms, and maintaining transparency are vital aspects that need to be carefully managed and regulated to foster trust and accountability. In addition to offering an exciting scientific program, CAiSE’24 will feature a best paper award, a journal special issue, and a PhD-thesis award: • Best Paper Award‚ prize EUR 1000 (sponsored by Springer) • A small selection of best papers will be invited to submit enhanced versions for consideration in a special issue of Elsevier Information Systems journal dedicated to this conference. • PhD-Thesis Award • Best PhD thesis of a past CAiSE Doctoral Consortium author (co-sponsored by the CAiSE Steering Committee and Springer) Papers should be submitted in PDF format. Submissions must conform to Springer‚ LNCS format and should not exceed 15 pages, including all text, figures, references, and appendices. Submissions not conforming to the LNCS format, exceeding 15 pages, or being obviously out of the scope of the conference, will be rejected without review. Three to five keywords characterizing the paper should be listed at the end of the abstract. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two program committee members and, if positively evaluated, by one additional program board member. The selected papers will be discussed among the paper reviewers online and during the program board meeting. As the review process is not blind, please indicate your name and affiliation on your submission. Accepted papers will be presented at CAiSE’24 and published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) conference proceedings. We invite three types of original and scientific papers. The type of submission must be indicated in the submission system. Each contribution should explicitly address the engineering or the operation of information systems, clearly identify the information systems problem addressed, the expected impact of the contribution to information system engineering or operation, and the research method used. We strongly advise authors to clearly emphasize these aspects in their paper, including the abstract. Technical papers describe original solutions (theoretical, methodological or conceptual) in the field of IS Engineering. A technical paper should clearly describe the situation or problem tackled, the relevant state of the art, the position or solution suggested and its potential‚ as well as demonstrate the benefits of the contribution through a rigorous evaluation. Empirical papers evaluate existing problem situations including problems encountered in practice, or validate proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e., by empirical studies, experiments, case studies, experience reports, simulations, etc. Scientific reflection on problems and practices in industry also falls into this category. The topic of the evaluation presented in the paper as well as its causal or logical properties must be clearly stated. The research method must be sound and appropriate. Exploratory papers describe completely new research positions or approaches, in order to face a generic situation arising because of new ICT tools, new kinds of activities, or new IS challenges. They must precisely describe the situation and demonstrate why current methods, tools, ways of reasoning, or meta-models are inadequate. They must also rigorously present their approach and demonstrate its pertinence and correctness in addressing the identified situation.
