The book is available at bookstores and as an open access PDF: https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5657/Mainstreaming-and-Game-Journ… Mainstreaming and Game Journalism addresses both the history and current practice of game journalism, along with the roles writers and industry play in conveying that the medium is a “mainstream” form of entertainment. Through interviews with reporters, the authors examine the bumpy process of what they think of as “mainstreaming,” which encompasses three overlapping factors. First, for games to become mainstream, they need to become more ubiquitous through broader media coverage. Second, an increase in ludic literacy, or how-to play games, determines whether that greater visibility translates into accessibility. Third, the mainstreaming of games must gain cultural legitimacy. The fact that games are more visible does little if only a few people take them seriously or deem them worthy of attention. Ultimately, Mainstreaming and Game Journalism provocatively questions whether games ever will—or even should—gain widespread cultural acceptance. ***Apologies for cross-postings*** Call for Workshop Proposals The 19th Annual ICA Mobile Communication Pre-Conference 2024 Mobilizing Communication Rights for Humans, More-than Humans, and Beyond Location: HOTA, Home of the Arts (135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, QLD 4217, Australia). Date: Wednesday 19 June 2024, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Deadline for Submissions: 15 January 2024. Mobile communication went from being new and revolutionary to a taken-for-granted and deeply embedded part of everyday life. However, very rarely has it been considered a human right, despite the fact that mobile communication has been co-extensive and deeply wound into the evolution of human rights. Whether related with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ Article 19, the rights of children and persons with disabilities, information, cultural, and sexual rights, or the rights of the environment and species—including the rights of the biosphere and more-than-humans--, mobile communication has offered platforms, ecosystems, cultures, practices, tools, and assemblages that enriched lives and worlds. This pre-conference considers mobile communication as a human right, while also recognizing ways in which mobile media use can suppress human rights. In the current post-smartphone era, in which mobile communication is much more pervasive and widespread, connecting humans, spaces, and things, we witness the perpetuation of enduring injustices, inequalities, and threats that emerge and develop in conjunction with the use of mobile communication devices. And in the ‘transition’, who sets the terms for mobile equalities and sustainable, inclusive futures? And what about the human right to ‘disconnect’? We invite scholars from diverse disciplinary, methodological, and theoretical backgrounds to join us as we explore the emerging trends and practices that connect mobile communication and human rights. We welcome a diversity of scholars at different stages in their careers: Ph.D. students, postdocs, junior faculty, along with more senior scholars to consider these issues in an open, informal, and conversational setting. Practitioners in the field are also encouraged to apply. Similar to previous editions, the pre-conference will be organized in the form of several interactive Blue-Sky workshop sessions where teams of scholars will present ideas at various levels of gestation. We welcome research ideas that are just being formed, open questions to the field, as well as the sharing of research results, as long as they are presented in an interactive manner. We also welcome explorations of practical projects, such as mobile applications, mobile media artworks, and mobile games. This pre-conference is designed to cultivate a supportive and integrated community of mobile communication thinkers. POSITION DESCRIPTION The Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of Latina/o/x/e-centered communication research. The Department seeks to hire a scholar who conducts theory-driven, culturally-informed, applied research on communication processes centering Latina/o/x/e communities. We desire candidates whose scholarship complements or extends at least one of the department’s three core areas in interpersonal and intergroup communication; media and digital communication; and organizational and group communication, as well as any of our cross-cutting emphases in health, community engagement, family, science, environmental, political, or global approaches to communication. We welcome a wide range of empirical approaches to research, including qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods. The ideal candidate would further strengthen the department’s relationship with, for example, the Chicano Studies Institute, the Migration Initiative, the Center for Information Technology and Society, the Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies, or the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. The candidate would connect with UCSB’s vibrant group of scholars who are deeply committed to engaging in research, teaching, and service that uplifts Latina/o/x/e communities. As a Hispanic-Serving Institute with a large Latina/o/x/e undergraduate student population (~28%), candidates are expected to have expertise or demonstrated commitment to providing inclusive and equitable teaching and mentoring to students from Latina/o/x/e communities; knowing, understanding, and challenging the systemic barriers that Latina/o/x/e communities face in higher education and in the discipline; and engaging in service at the department, university, and/or disciplinary levels that prioritizes Latina/o/x/e communities. If you missed the Canada IGF yesterday, here is some insight into the elephant in the Canadian Internet Governance room, the recently passed Online News Act. Panelists include Michael Geist, and ISOC's own Natalie Campbell. [image: ISOC LIVE] <https://isoc.live/16932>On *September 20, 2023* the *Canadian Journalism Foundation <https://cjf-fjc.ca/>* hosted a panel discussion '*Bill C-18: What's at Stake for Journalism and Canadian Democracy? <https://cjf-fjc.ca/event/billc18/>*' The Canadian government passed *Bill C-18, the Online News Act <https://www.google.com/url?esrc=s&q=&rct=j&sa=U&url=https://en.wikipedia.or…>*, on June 22, 2023. This bill “aims to enhance fairness in the economic relationship between news businesses and online platforms by enhancing the bargaining position of news businesses relative to that of large and dominant digital news intermediaries.” The legislation, which comes into effect in December 2023, will require tech giants Meta and Google to make agreements with news publishers to compensate them for revenue-generating news content that appears on their sites. In response, both tech companies have removed links from Canadian news sites from their platforms. Dear AoIR members, I am delighted to announce the publication of my new open access book that may be of interest to some of you and/or your students. Visual Citizenship. Communicating political opinions and emotions on social media This book explores visual political engagement online – how citizens participate in the dynamism of life in society by expressing their opinions and emotions on various issues of democratic life in image-based social media posts, independently of collective actions. Looking beyond large digital social movements to focus on the everyday, the book provides a well-documented and comprehensive framework of key notions, concrete methods and examples of empirical insights into everyday visual citizenship on social media. It shows how the visual has become ubiquitous in citizens’ communication on social media, focusing on how citizens use visual content to express their emotions and opinions on social media platforms when they discuss politics in a large sense.
