Free download: https://bit.ly/3Rzi4Ct ******************************************* Ageing with Smartphones in Uganda is based on a 16-month ethnography about experiences of ageing in a neighbourhood in a diverse neighbourhood in Kampala, Uganda. It examines the impact of smartphones and mobile phones on older people's health and everyday lives as part of the global 'Anthropology of Smartphones and Smart Ageing' project. In taking the lens of the smartphone to understand experiences of ageing in this context, the monograph presents the articulation and practice of 'togetherness in the dotcom age'. Taking a 'convivial' approach, which celebrates multiple ways of knowing about social life, Charlotte Hawkins draws from these expressions about cooperative morality and modernity to consider the everyday mitigation of profound social change. 'Dotcom' is understood to encompass everything from the influence of social media to urban migration and lifestyles in the city, to shifts in ways of knowing and relating. At the same time, dotcom tools such as mobile phones and smartphones facilitate elder care through, for example, regular mobile money remittances. This book explores how dotcom relates to older people's health, in particular their care norms, social standing, values of respect and relatedness, and intergenerational relationships - both political and personal. It also re-frames the youth-centricity of research on the city and work, new media and technology, politics and service provision in Uganda. Through ethnographic consideration of everyday life and self-formation in this context, the monograph seeks to contribute to an ever-incomplete understanding of how we relate to each other and to the world around us. Dear Colleagues, **Registrations closing Wednesday, 27 September** It is our great pleasure to invite you to register for the 2023 Policy & Internet Conference to be held at the University of Sydney, Sydney Australia, 28-29 September, 2023, 8:30am – 4:30pm: https://internet-policy-meco.sydney.edu.au The Policy & Internet conference will bring together a range of international voices to demonstrate how varying approaches towards internet policy are established, embodied and engaged with by a variety of stakeholders. Together, scholars and policymakers will discuss current practices, alternative designs and the ‘unknowns’ that are required for inclusive internet governance. With keynotes from Professor Johanna Weaver, Director of the Tech Policy Design Centre (Australian National University), and Dr Justine Humphry Senior Lecturer Digital Cultures (University of Sydney), alongside a range of panels composed of platform regulators, advocates and researchers, there will be two days of engaged policy discussion. There is also a selection of accepted papers with a strong focus on the Asia Pacific, First Nations and digital hostility, where the 2023 Policy & Internet Conference will showcase some of the premier research emerging from the region. While social media has made knowledge more accessible and allows for the bypassing of hegemonic gatekeepers, not all marginalized voices have profited from this to an equal extent. In addition, these socio-technical systems have facilitated the spread of epistemically harmful content and created online ecosystems in which harmful content thrives. Because of its relative novelty, the epistemic dimensions of social media have not yet been sufficiently studied. There is a lack of integrative frameworks which can allow for the theoretical and empirical study of the epistemic dimensions of social media. This special issue aims to rectify this by mapping out a social epistemology of social media that does justice to the twin desiderata of providing a unifying framework while acknowledging the diversity of concerns and practices. Apart from descriptive questions, this special issue is interested in answering normative questions regarding social media and the normativity of knowledge-oriented practices. A guiding idea is that we – as users, stakeholders and citizens, through individual and collective action – can aim to turn social media platforms into better epistemic environments which facilitate the spread of knowledge while safeguarding against the spread of epistemically toxic content. This special issue thus aims to bring internet scholarship into conversation with social epistemology. These two overlapping fields have much in common. Both are relatively young fields that study online putative knowledge-producing practices and dynamics. Both emphasize the mutual interactions of people and technology, and both are interested in real-life, non-ideal conditions. While Internet scholars have focused on empirical research methods (Altay et al. 2022; Marres 2017; Rogers 2019; Venturini and Munk 2021), social epistemologists have focused on theory and normative assessment (Frost-Arnold 2023; Miller and Record 2017; 2013; Simon 2014). Social epistemologists have also dealt with defining fake news (Gelfert 2018, Anderau 2021) and identifying the conditions under which fake news and other toxic epistemic content spread online, paying special attention to the interplay between technological affordance (Record 2013) and social-epistemic norms of posting and sharing (Arielli 2018; Gelfert 2021; Marin 2021; Nguyen 2020; Record and Miller 2022a). Thus, in addition to social epistemologists, this special issue invites contributions from empirical researchers from cognitive sciences, media studies, and STS who share the main commitments and interests of social epistemology. Questions of interest for the special issue include, but are by no means limited to: ● How may social media platforms contribute to epistemic justice? (Frost-Arnold 2023; Knöchelmann 2021; Miller and Record 2017) ● Which strategies, e.g., fact-checking, nudging, and content moderation, are most effective at mitigating the dissemination of epistemically toxic content online? (Record and Miller 2022b) ● What are the limitations and risks of such strategies? ● How can we avoid the risk of public debate reverting to positivistic notions of facts? What, for example, might ‘fact-checking’ mean in a world where ‘we can’t have our facts back’? It was initiated in 2021 by Mr. Yohanna Joseph Waliya from the University of Calabar, Nigeria in collaboration with Prof. Mourad El Fhali from Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, Morocco, Prof. Richard O. Ajah from the University of Uyo, Prof. Tunde Ope-Davies from the Centre for digital Humanities University of Lagos, and Prof. Abdelmoumin El Azouzi, also from Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, Fez, Morocco. This year conference and workshop will digress from the normal African Electronic Literature to sensitise scholars and artists on the Digital Humanities and interdisciplinary scholarship. Digital Humanities (DH) is the most recognised buzzword today in the multidisciplinary scholarship in the world that assembles disciplines such as arts, humanities, social sciences, computer science, new media studies, artificial intelligence, deep learning and machine learning. It builds on amplifying multisectoral methodologies and collaborations, harnessing digital infrastructures and tools into humanistic as well as artistic studies. In other words, DH employs computer, artificial intelligence (AI), deep leaning (DL), machine learning (ML), and recently Large Language Models (LLMs) as methods and tools for investigation in the arts and humanities. The budding DH community in Africa has made frantic efforts through collaborations in the area of capacity building and sensitization of African scholars. Summer schools, conferences, sensitization workshops among others have been used to train African scholars in DH scholarship. CEDHUL-Centre for Digital Humanities University of Lagos’ Lagos Summer School in Digital Humanities (LSSDH), South African Center for Digital Language Resource (SADiLAR) and the newly established Institute of Digital Humanities in Francophone Africa (InHuNum-Af) in University of Yaoundé, the Digital Humanities Unit of the Faculty of Arts (DHuFArts),University of Uyo, and African Electronic Literature Alliance and African Diasporic Electronic Literature (AELA & ADELI) have made great efforts recently in Africa to close the gap in the application of computational turn for research and development in the arts and humanities through provisions of the capacity building opportunities. Despite impressive moves from these capacity building initiatives, DH scholarship is not receiving institutional supports from many African universities and consequently, many humanities and arts scholars are cut off from exposures to digital humanities scholarship and its enormous benefits to individual scholars and institutions. To fill this gap, the Faculty of Arts, University of Calabar, in collaboration with the African Electronic Literature Alliance and African Diasporic Electronic Literature (AELA & ADELI), partnering with the Centre for Digital Humanities University of Lagos (CEDHUL), the Digital Humanities Unit of the Faculty of Arts (DHuFArts), University of Uyo, FAHSANU, CTLE, DORD, University of Calabar organizes a four-day training workshop and conference for national and international scholars thematised “Digital Humanities and Interdisciplinary Scholarship”. While social media has made knowledge more accessible and allows for the bypassing of hegemonic gatekeepers, not all marginalized voices have profited from this to an equal extent. In addition, these socio-technical systems have facilitated the spread of epistemically harmful content and created online ecosystems in which harmful content thrives. Because of its relative novelty, the epistemic dimensions of social media have not yet been sufficiently studied. There is a lack of integrative frameworks which can allow for the theoretical and empirical study of the epistemic dimensions of social media. This special issue aims to rectify this by mapping out a social epistemology of social media that does justice to the twin desiderata of providing a unifying framework while acknowledging the diversity of concerns and practices. Apart from descriptive questions, this special issue is interested in answering normative questions regarding social media and the normativity of knowledge-oriented practices. A guiding idea is that we – as users, stakeholders and citizens, through individual and collective action – can aim to turn social media platforms into better epistemic environments which facilitate the spread of knowledge while safeguarding against the spread of epistemically toxic content. This special issue thus aims to bring internet scholarship into conversation with social epistemology. These two overlapping fields have much in common. Both are relatively young fields that study online putative knowledge-producing practices and dynamics. Both emphasize the mutual interactions of people and technology, and both are interested in real-life, non-ideal conditions. While Internet scholars have focused on empirical research methods (Altay et al. 2022; Marres 2017; Rogers 2019; Venturini and Munk 2021), social epistemologists have focused on theory and normative assessment (Frost-Arnold 2023; Miller and Record 2017; 2013; Simon 2014). Social epistemologists have also dealt with defining fake news (Gelfert 2018, Anderau 2021) and identifying the conditions under which fake news and other toxic epistemic content spread online, paying special attention to the interplay between technological affordance (Record 2013) and social-epistemic norms of posting and sharing (Arielli 2018; Gelfert 2021; Marin 2021; Nguyen 2020; Record and Miller 2022a). Thus, in addition to social epistemologists, this special issue invites contributions from empirical researchers from cognitive sciences, media studies, and STS who share the main commitments and interests of social epistemology. Questions of interest for the special issue include, but are by no means limited to: ● How may social media platforms contribute to epistemic justice? (Frost-Arnold 2023; Knöchelmann 2021; Miller and Record 2017) ● Which strategies, e.g., fact-checking, nudging, and content moderation, are most effective at mitigating the dissemination of epistemically toxic content online? (Record and Miller 2022b) ● What are the limitations and risks of such strategies? ● How can we avoid the risk of public debate reverting to positivistic notions of facts? What, for example, might ‘fact-checking’ mean in a world where ‘we can’t have our facts back’? (Marres 2018) ● How do social media platforms afford novel speech acts, such as liking or sharing, how are they to be characterized, and what are their implications to the online dissemination of content? These complex systems are frequently distributed over heterogeneous networks and process a large amount of data, leveraging emerging artificial intelligence (AI), large language models, and machine learning techniques. Complexity arises from many factors, including the dynamic environment and the scenarios these systems operate in, demanding and sometimes conflicting requirements in functionality, efficiency, scalability, security, dependability and adaptability, data heterogeneity, as well as the wide range of development methodologies, programming languages and implementation details. Performance, real-time behaviour, fault tolerance, robustness, security, adaptability, development time and cost, and long life concerns are some of the key issues arising in the development of such systems. The International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS) is a well-established event that has been held around the world for over 25 years. The goal of this conference is to bring together industrial, academic, and government experts from a variety of application domains and software disciplines, to discuss how the disciplines’ problems and solution techniques interact within the whole system. Researchers, practitioners, tool developers and users, and technology transfer experts are all welcome. The scope of the conference includes long-term research issues, near-term requirements and challenges, established complex systems, emerging promising tools, and retrospective and prospective reflections of research and development into complex systems. The ultimate goal is to build a rich and comprehensive conference program that can fit the interests and needs of different classes of attendees: professionals, researchers, managers, and students. A program goal is to organize several sessions that include both academic and industrial papers on a given topic and culminate panels to discuss relationships between industrial and academic research. SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION Full papers are divided into two categories: Technical Papers and Experience Reports. The papers submitted to both categories will be reviewed by the program committee members, and papers accepted in either category will be published in the conference proceedings. Technical papers should describe original research, and experience reports should present practical projects carried out in the industry, and reflect on the lessons learnt from them. Short paper submissions describe early-stage, ongoing or PhD research. All short papers will be reviewed by the program committee members, and accepted short papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Submissions to the conference must not have been published or be concurrently considered for publication elsewhere. All submissions will be judged on the basis of originality, contribution to the field, technical and presentation quality, and relevance to the conference. The proceedings have been published by the Conference Publishing Services (CPS) of the IEEE Computer Society. Submitted manuscripts should be in English and formatted in the style of the double-column IEEE CPS format. Full papers should not exceed 9 pages + 1 page for bibliography, and short papers should not exceed 5 pages + 1 page for bibliography, including figures, references, and appendices. AoIR on Mastodon during #AoIR2023 and beyond

Hello All, In October 2022, Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter. Almost a year later and we have witnessed the gutting of the content moderation department, a huge increase in hate speech, and in real terms the end to API-based researcher access to data. Twitter (or ‘X’) isn’t just unfriendly but actually unsafe for many more people. For these reasons, the Association of Internet Researchers has decided that we will be ramping down our use of Twitter, effective immediately. Instead, we are shifting our activity to Mastodon, where for a few months we have been running our very own server. This means that we will not be tweeting during the #AoIR2023 conference. Instead, we will be posting on AoIR’s Mastodon instance (https://aoir.social) Membership of this instance is a benefit of AoIR membership. AoIR members have recently been sent an invite link; if you are not a member of AoIR, why not join <https://aoir.org/membership/> and also get access to our online community. We have put together a short ‘Starting out on Mastodon <https://youtu.be/b_gM1onnKeE>’ video guide (and a longer one <https://youtu.be/djepDsuZTeQ> too), but it’s important for us to really emphasize that you do not need to change your Twitter persona (or persona from whatever other platform(s) you use) for Mastodon. You will need to write textual descriptions of images you post (ALT text), and it’s customary to write a post in which you introduce yourself, but you can be just as whimsical, self-promotional, political, irreverent, pet-obsessed, puntastic, or whatever, as you were/are on Twitter. Honestly. That said, for a long time, Twitter has been the back channel, and then pretty close to the front channel, for AoIR conferences and the AoIR community. As a community, many of us are invested in trying to make, find, promote and experience better online communities.
