Announcing Cactool - A platform for easy human-coding of social media posts or images for content analysis

Dear friends, I’m pleased to announce the latest (& greatest) release of Cactool. Cactool is a platform for easy human-coding of social media posts for content analysis. It was designed from the bottom-up for researchers who want to code social media or visual content, but don’t need the analytical tools (and cost) of other platforms – with easy import and exporting of data. The platform easily lets you contextually analyse a list of social media posts in their native form. Simply import a CSV that contains a list of social media posts (such as collected through scraping services); another to set your questions; and optionally set user logins, and the platform will do the rest – proving you with an easy-to-use human-coding platform. Set-up guides, worksheets, and documentation can be found on our website at: https://cactool.github.io/ Features: • No more coding via spreadsheets: Coding via your browser (tested working on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, & Safari) with posts visible as they would be on the social media platform. This allows your coders to evaluate social media content in their native format. • Simple Import and Export: Take your pre-existing social media URLs from software such as 4Cat, NodeXL, or API Scrapers and import them as a CSV list. When done, you can export your data via CSV to whatever analysis software you desire (such as SPSS/Excel). • Importing of image/text data: Have data from secondary source with no URLs? No Problem. • Manage Multiple Datasets: Want to split your project by source/themes? You can manage multiple concurrent datasets at the same time. • Built for collaboration: Cactool comes pre-packaged with user management; codes attributed are attributed to each coder for coder reliability calculation (such as ReCal). Multiple people can be coding at the same time without sharing documents. No need to worry about version control or splitting up data. • Code on the Go: Cactool is mobile friendly and can be accessed remotely (we recommend using a VPN to connect, see our tutorial for why). Thank you! ### “Writing, Thinking, and Learning with AI: Exploring Relationships of Rhetoric and Artificial Intelligence” Join us October 13–14, 2023, for a virtual conference hosted by the SUNY Council on Writing and the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University The recent attention given to the topic of artificial intelligence has been largely attributed to the introduction of ChatGPT, the conversational (and controversial) chatbot released by OpenAI. ChatGPT, itself an assemblage of many technologies like large language models, neural networks, and natural language processing that we colloquially simplify to “AI,” represents only a portion of the larger landscape of machine learning and artificial intelligence development that has taken place over decades. But the sudden explosion of public access to sophisticated generative AI programs like ChatGPT has pushed into the mainstream the idea that machines can “write” (perhaps even in ways some readers see as cogent and well-reasoned) in response to open-ended questions. What does it mean to practice rhetoric in this age of artificial intelligence? What does it mean, more broadly, to write, think, and learn? How does this new development in “writing technology” reshape our understanding and practice as human rhetors? What are the areas of concern and/or potential, and how do we address them in different disciplines and contexts? What rhetorical relationships of AI and writing, thinking, and learning might we wish to amplify or attenuate? We invite teachers and scholars across all disciplines to come together to explore the broader implications of generative AI tools like ChatGPT for the future of rhetoric, writing, thinking, and learning. This year, we want to specifically invite scholars/ educators from other disciplines who are interested in how their own subjects and classrooms are being influenced by rhetoric and AI. We welcome panels and presentations that engage with how we may carve new pathways of pedagogy and scholarship by advancing our understanding of new modes of artificial intelligence, addressing what we value about human agency as writers, and exploring how we may use and shape this emerging technology. Some ways to engage with the theme include but are not limited to the following topics: • Ethics of persuasion by and with AI • Critical thinking and computer thinking • The ethics of using language-generation software in student writing, and the ethics of “detecting” such use • Existing and emerging AI developments and platforms likely to influence writing and rhetoric in the future • Enhancing learning and pedagogy (in/across the disciplines) with artificial intelligence • Dominant discourses and rhetorics of AI • Student agency and artificial intelligence • Public discourse and perception of AI, writing, and/or education • Social change and artificial intelligence • AI and linguistic diversity, neurodiversity, and equity • Hermeneutic and ontological grounding in the age of AI We encourage submissions from faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars across the disciplines within and beyond SUNY. In addition to traditional abstract and panel presentation proposals, we seek out unique submissions that play with conference form, for example by (1) assembling workshops and discussions to address a central question or problematic regarding AI and rhetoric to prompt community conversations, (2) bringing together a panel with scholars from rhetoric and writing with experts in other fields, and (3) preparing a demonstration or performance of inventive and artistic uses of AI, writing, and rhetoric. New Book: Digital Intermediation

Dear Colleagues, ***with apologies for cross-posting/self-promotion*** It is with great pleasure I can share the publication of my latest book, Digital Intermediation: Unseen Infrastructure for Cultural Production. https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/mono/10.4324/9781003177388/digital-inte… This book offers a new framework for understanding content creation and distribution across automated media platforms – a new mediatisation process. The book draws on three years of empirical and theoretical research to carefully identify and describe a number of unseen digital infrastructures that contribute to predictive media (algorithmic platforms) within the media production process: digital intermediation. The empirical field data is drawn from several international sites, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, London, Amsterdam, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Sydney and Cartagena. By highlighting the automated content production and distribution process, the book responds to a number of regulatory debates emerging around the societal impact of platformisation. Digital Intermediation: Towards transparent digital infrastructure describes and highlights the importance of key developments that help shape the production and distribution of content, including micro-platformization and digital first personalities. The book explains how digital agencies and multichannel networks use platforms strategically to increase exposure for the talent they manage, while providing inside access to the processes and requirements of developers who create algorithms for platforms. The findings in this book provide key recommendations for policy makers working within digital media platforms based on the everyday operation of content production and consumption within automated media environments. Finally, this book highlights user agency as a strategy for consumers who seek information on automated social media content distribution platforms. As Brecht once observed: "I stood on a hill and I saw the Old approaching, but it came as the New." Prediction supplies a powerful conceptual model for this dynamic of stasis through disruption by connecting technical and mythological attitudes of probabilistic control. I trace some throughlines between the technical conceit of predictivity (that criminality or emotion can be anticipated through data-driven modeling) and the mythological use of prediction (where history is an extrapolation of known technological advancements). Drawing from theories of ritual and experiment, I examine the demonstrative, belief-building work that prediction does - from 18th century automata to Amazon warehouses, from Marvin Minsky to the Year 10,000. What we call "tech" today serves as a legitimising function for capital, and crucial to this function is the active foreclosure of any political future other than more of the same. Bio: Sun-ha Hong examines forms of uncertainty, doubt and belief around surveillance, smart machines & AI. He is Assistant Professor in Communication at Simon Fraser University, Canada, and was previously Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities at MIT. Sun-ha is the author of *Technologies of Speculation: The Limits of Knowledge in a Data-Driven Society* (2020), and is working on his next book, *Predictions Without Futures*. *Call for Participation* *“Exploring Collaborative Interpretive Practice”* A workshop co-located with ASIS&T 2023, Saturday, 28 October (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM BST), 2023, London, UK Collaboration on the interpretation and analysis of texts, images, artifacts, qualitative data, and other recorded information is fundamental to knowledge production in many disciplines. However, collaborators may have different goals, work routines, research paradigms and methodologies, background knowledge, and more. In this workshop, we aim to engage in collective exploration of how collaborative interpretation happens and brainstorm together on ways to develop knowledge infrastructures to support it. Each of us brings our own perspective to interpretation, which shapes our work in various ways. How do we ensure that everyone has a voice and is able to take an active part in the research? In this workshop, we will consider how collaborative interpretation unfolds in different settings and within the research process, and ask questions including: - Who is performing interpretation? - What is being interpreted? - What are the goals of interpretation? - How is the interpretation being performed? - What are the analytical lenses? - Can different actors incorporate the fruits of collaboration into their own research to forward different goals? We may also work with and interpret a range of artifacts. How can we interact with these artifacts, and how does their nature (material, symbolic, institutional) affect our interpretation? What can we learn about an artifact based on other resources? This workshop is an opportunity for researchers and practitioners in digital humanities, cultural heritage, and information science, including librarians, archivists, curators, and teachers, to share experiences and ideas about collaborative interpretation, engage in activities to stimulate our thinking, and emerge with takeaways we can incorporate into our own research.
