Dear friends and colleagues, I am teaching some new undergraduate Media Studies courses this year. I was wondering whether anyone would be willing to share their materials or syllabi. As there is probably a lot of overlap between the courses that AoIR members teach, it would be interesting to hear what other people do: Is there a particular textbook that is useful? Is there a set of core readings that is typically assigned in these types of classes? Any ideas for activities that work well in lecture-style settings for undergrad students? Here are the courses that I'm working on: Introduction to New Media: This wide-ranging course covers the contemporary social, economic, and political implications of the Internet. Key topics include digital politics, the risks of AI, data ethics, and misinformation. The aim is to provide students with an understanding of the main contemporary issues regarding the societal implications of the internet while framing these with core theories from Media Studies, Communication, and Information Studies. Economic implications of the Internet: This course covers the impact of the internet on various sectors, including but not limited to, retail, banking, finance, and travel. It covers both practical changes and shifts in norms and theory engendered by the internet. It covers the main ways in which companies adopt and use digital technologies. I’m still in the very early process of designing these courses, so would be very happy for any input so that it doesn’t feel as though I am reinventing the wheel. Digital data access has survived in an uncomfortable and unpredictable flux for years, but the most recent wave of policy changes may well be existential. Consider the following developments from the past 12 months: - Elon Musk has eliminated free access to Twitter’s API, and the only academically useful paid tiers far exceed most researchers’ budgets. - Musk has also demanded that Decahose users delete all Twitter data acquired under previous agreements–whether this demand will be extended to Academic API users is currently unknown. - Reddit has denied access to its API for Pushshift, a popular service used by researchers to collect Reddit data. Popular Reddit app Apollo is facing API charges of $1.7M per month to continue operating. - TikTok released a new API for researchers, which among other things requires them “to regularly refresh TikTok Research API Data at least every fifteen (15) days, and delete data that is not available from the TikTok Research API at the time of each refresh.” - Crowdtangle, Meta’s researcher tool for acquiring data from Facebook and Instagram, still exists as of this writing. But rumors of its imminent demise have been reported in multiple reputable outlets. If your research pipeline has been caught in the crossfire of these and similar developments, this one-day Post-API Conference is for you. We’re looking to convene some of the brightest minds working on these issues across disciplines to help identify the most viable solutions and alternatives. To encourage informal conversation between participants, the conference will adopt a nontraditional structure. We seek to hire colleagues who will conduct research on and teach about IM technologies (augmented, virtual, and extended reality – AR/VR/XR) and/or digital gaming spaces through the lenses of strategic communication, design, marketing, and their impacts and effects on users and culture. IM sits at the intersection of a variety of emerging interactive and immersive social, entertainment, and communication technologies, ranging from artificial intelligence to live streaming, that require rethinking the professional and social boundaries of media industries, practitioners, etc. For example, the intersection of AI and Web3 platforms use XR technology, require novel interfaces and modes of communication, and are currently being explored to a large degree in massively multiplayer online games like Fortnite and Roblox. Hires would bring the following key contributions to our faculty: 1. Expertise in theories and concepts pertinent to immersive media and game studies in regard to fields of communication, design, marketing, human-computer interaction, journalism, or affiliated fields. 2. A related specialty, such as the study of identity, digital cultures, emerging media industries and economics (XR, cryptocurrency), e-sports, fan studies, digital asset production, content creation, human-machine communication, strategic communication, and media psychology. 3. A capacity to teach in our new online Immersive Media Communication master’s program, our new Game Studies minor, and/or required coursework at the SOJC, such as media ethics, gender, media and diversity, and introduction to media studies. This hire will join our growing body of scholars studying and teaching immersive media and game studies, including the launch of the Immersive Media Communications program in the fall of 2023, which will be conducted in collaboration with the Oregon Reality (OR) Lab and the Immersive Media Lab (IML), both of which focus on experiential learning and research regarding the ethical use of immersive media and their social, cultural and professional impacts. These positions would also directly serve the new Game Studies minor, which focuses on training media professionals in the culture and communication of games. These positions would have important synergies with the Strategic Communication MA program and the Public Relations and Advertising areas, with interest likely from MMJ and Journalism as well. Faculty members would also ideally strengthen SOJC’s ties to other units on campus, including existing collaborations with CAS (e.g., the annual Data|Media|Digital Graduate Symposium), the campus-wide New Media and Culture Certificate program for graduate students, the ethics minor in philosophy, and UO’s Data Sciences Initiative, through a practical orientation to ethical issues in society. Department or Program Summary The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,450 undergraduates and 150 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Hi everyone! We are inviting applications for a 3-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in citizens, media and democracy at the University of Bergen, Norway. Postdoctoral fellow will work as a part of our team for the project “Distributed and prepared. A new theory of citizens’ public connection networks in the age of datafication” (PREPARE), funded by The European Research Council (2023-2027) and led by professor Hallvard Moe. PREPARE analyzes citizens’ potential for political engagement. With a standing in media and communication studies, but drawing on political theory, anthropology and sociology, the project will stake out a new path for research on citizens’ role in democracies. We are looking for an ambitious scholar who wants to help develop a new agenda for researching citizens’ relations to the public sphere in Norway. We are concentrating on hard-to-reach social groups to understand how they connect to the public and engage with politics in a broad sense. Groups being studied in the project so far includes immigrants and elderly people in rural communities. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to suggest one or more relevant social groups in their project proposal. Twitter API Question

Is anyone on the list currently using the $5,000/month option to access Twitter data via the API for research? https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api/getting-started/about-twi… If so, please contact me about the functionality. I was wondering if there might be interest in forming a special interest research group for the 2024 U.S. presidential election cycle (SIRG 2024). If a number of universities contributed a subscription fee, agreed upon a steering committee to generate key queries to create a SIRG 2024 corpus, and the data was collected via an API and then posted in free, collaborative, web-accessible platforms for research and teaching, it would be a stop gap measure to restore some academic transparency in a key social media platform implicated in 2016 and 2020 election shenanigans. If we get it up and running in the next 30 days, there will be more than 12 million curated and accessible election Tweets before the voting begins. While it's not what big data folks crave, it is enough to shine a spotlight on Twitter mechanics in the election and build new teaching and research opportunities around the data across a consortium of institutions. I know there is a ruckus about how all Twitter data should be free, and a meeting where we need not present proposed solutions involving paying for data. That is a bit insular and slightly annoying but also wearily familiar. More importantly, that is not how science works. For example: https://www.science.org/content/article/how-much-did-your-university-pay-yo… Universities spend money on gathering and disseminating research and teaching data. It is a core university function. Anyone who has ever run or worked in an academic research lab or received a grant knows all about costs, direct and indirect. Talk to the top librarians, your Dean, successful grant writers, as well as the VP for Research, then let's collaborate to solve this problem. There could be SIRGs for a variety of important topics. advice about researching job search boards

Hi colleagues, In one of my research projects I'm trying to get a sense of labor market shifts in a particular industry, and my intention was to dig through postings on popular job search boards like Indeed, CareerBuilder, LinkedIn, and so on. I am mostly interested in linguistic shifts over time, geography, job function, and so on. Not surprisingly, though, this is nearly impossible due to the sites' overall highly restrictive user agreements, closed nature of postings, inaccessibility of past posts, and so on -- all the stuff we as internet researchers would expect. I still think that given the very prominent role that these boards play in socio-political and economic organization/processes, that someone amongst us has to have figured out a way to do it. Or, at least, someone must have thought of a workable substitute method. Are any of you aware of a study that monitors such changes in job search boards? As I said, I'm mostly interested in linguistic changes, but studies across the board (i.e., salaries, geographies, etc.) would be useful. I've done a fair amount of digging but am coming up short... The 20th International Conference on Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things (DCOSS-IoT 2024) will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The conference is always co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and by the IEEE Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP). The conference was previously known as DCOSS. Starting in 2023, the event is broadening its scope beyond sensor networks to include smart systems in general and the Internet of Things (IoT). The updated name is "Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things" (DCOSS-IoT). In the last few years, we have witnessed significant growth in the use of IoT and distributed sensor systems in several application areas, including smart transportation, smart energy systems, smart homes and buildings, smart healthcare, and environmental monitoring. For smart sensor systems to truly become useful and pervasive, we need to address several research challenges, including the tight integration of sensing and machine intelligence, reliable and efficient networking, interoperability and scalability, the need for dependable autonomy, interaction with humans, and important aspects of security, privacy and trust. DCOSS-IoT focuses on issues arising in the entire IoT and networked sensor systems stack, covering aspects of high-level abstractions, models and languages, communication technologies, novel algorithms and applications, system design approaches and architectures, and tools for simulated and real deployments. Potential authors are invited to submit original, unpublished manuscripts demonstrating recent advances in theoretical and experimental research. Please use the US letter size (8.5 X 11 in) standard IEEE conference LaTeX format or Microsoft Word template available on: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html. All submissions should be written in English and have a maximum of eight (8) printed pages, including figures and references. Starting last year, DCOSS-IoT will follow a double-blind review process. As a result, authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions. Although submission is double-blind, the existence or availability of non-anonymous preprints (on arXiv or other preprint servers) will not lead to your paper being rejected. Reviewers will be instructed not to look for such preprints actively, but encountering them will not constitute a conflict of interest. Papers that do not meet the size, formatting, and anonymization requirements will not be reviewed. We require each paper to be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and submitted through the HotCRP submission system. *** Special Issue and Best Paper Awards *** DCOSS-IoT 2024 will announce a best paper award and a best poster/demo award.
