Hello all, The AoIR community may be interested in a new book that I, Natasha Tusikov, co-authored with Blayne Haggart entitled, *The New Knowledge: Information, Data, and the Remaking of Global Power *(Rowman & Littlefield). It's open access, available under 'features' at https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781538160879/The-New-Knowledge-Information-Data-an… >From the global geopolitical arena to the smart city, control over knowledge—particularly over data and intellectual property—has become a key battleground for the exercise of economic and political power. For companies and governments alike, control over knowledge—what scholar Susan Strange calls the knowledge structure—has become a goal unto itself. The rising dominance of the knowledge structure is leading to a massive redistribution of power, including from individuals to companies and states. Strong intellectual property rights have concentrated economic benefits in a smaller number of hands, while the “internet of things” is reshaping basic notions of property, ownership, and control. In the scramble to create and control data and intellectual property, governments and companies alike are engaging in ever-more surveillance. The New Knowledge is a guide to and analysis of these changes, and of the emerging phenomenon of the knowledge-driven society. It highlights how the pursuit of the control over knowledge has become its own ideology, with its own set of experts drawn from those with the ability to collect and manipulate digital data. Haggart and Tusikov propose a workable path forward—knowledge decommodification—to ensure that our new knowledge is not treated simply as a commodity to be bought and sold, but as a way to meet the needs of the individuals and communities that create this knowledge in the first place.

CFP: Topical Collection on cross-cultural impacts of XR with Digital Society

Digital Society is running a Topical Collection called “The Situated Metaverse: Cross-Cultural Philosophical and Practical Implications of Extended Reality<https://link.springer.com/collections/jdbeeejfed>.” Submissions open in October, but inquiries and proposals are welcome any time. Below is the description of the TC. This Topical Collection aims to address how XR’s impacts will be understood in different cultural contexts. While most XR development is concentrated in a few countries, its use and impacts will be global. Despite this, most analyses of the potential impacts of XR focus on the American and European contexts. This not only overlooks several of the major XR development powerhouses, but also how XR technologies and experiences will have global implications, including on human rights and the ways we interact with each other. Researching emerging technologies involves some amount of prediction, but the rich science-fiction tradition surrounding XR promotes often baseless speculation. In order to promote XR as a topic of legitimate academic discourse, this Topical Collection welcomes clearheaded analyses of how XR will impact education, health, socializing, and work, especially those that consider under-addressed topics and locations, as well as explorations of the implications of XR across different philosophical traditions. Topics that could be addressed include but are not limited to: - The role of XR in shaping diverse educational practices and pedagogies. - The applications and impact of XR in healthcare, especially for overlooked conditions and populations. - What impacts XR may have on mental and physical health, both positive and negative. - The social implications of XR, especially as regards connectivity and dislocation. - How XR may impact the future of work, labor relations, and practices. - What sociotechnical imaginaries of XR are being forwarded by under-studied entities. - The philosophical implications of the role and nature of XR in our societies, particularly those that foreground non-Western perspectives. - How the “metaverse” is defined and developed in different contexts. - The cultural implications of XR adoption, especially as regards under-represented locations and communities. - Ethical challenges of widespread XR use. The Department of Communication at North Carolina State University invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in Media Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August 16, 2024. We seek candidates from a broad spectrum of critical, analytical, and methodological approaches. Specific areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to: infrastructure and platform studies, critical data studies (including algorithmic media, big-data analytics, and AI); mobilities and mobile media; game studies; media art; policy, ethics and political economy of media. We especially welcome applicants whose work speaks to the social and ethical implications of media technologies and discourses, for example: social and environmental justice, globalization and coloniality, health disparities, social and economic inequality, and/or inequalities based on race, gender or sexuality. The successful candidate will have demonstrated pedagogical excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, ability to carry out independent and innovative research published in academic journals and other outlets and experience working with a variety of students. The successful candidate will be expected to seek internal and external research funding and develop collaborative initiatives. Special attention will be given to candidates who can bridge different scholarly traditions and methodological approaches, contribute a diversity of perspectives (including from outside the Global North), and support both of our graduate programs–the PhD Program in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media and MS program in Communication–through teaching and advising.
