Hope all is well! Had a question you might be able to crack! Is there a way to sort/filter search result by SERP features? For example, I’m interested in finding questions with high views/votes/followers on Quora BUT with no answers (or just a couple). Call for Proposals: ICA Panel on Brenda Dervin, Communication, and Global Human Rights

For those who might be interested in presenting at the 2024 ICA Conference in Australia, June 20-24, we (Lois Foreman-Wernet, David Schaefer, and CarrieLynn Reinhard) are drafting a proposal for a Conference Theme panel to celebrate the work of Brenda Dervin. The theme this year is Communication and Global Human Rights, and it is intended to: 1) take stock of the contributions of communication scholarship to the study of human rights; 2) to foreground current research and practice; and 3) to outline promising directions for communication studies. We think that Dervin’s work would fit well under this umbrella given her concern for dialogue and ensuring the voices of the unheard, her work focused on the communication practices of government and organizations, and SMM’s ability to bridge divides (disciplinary, methodological, and otherwise). It is clearly relevant to the topic and – of course, we would argue – more important than ever. Submission guidelines require cross-divisional participation and contributions from at least two countries. Panelist diversity is also encouraged. The proposal should include a 500-word rationale explaining how the panel fits the conference theme plus a shorter 150-word rationale to appear in the conference program. Final call for survey participants: on the teaching of Extended Reality Technologies & Synthetic Media in Screen Media Programmes

Dear Colleagues, Many thanks to those who responded to the July call. This is a final call for those* who work in the Higher Education sector and teach on screen media programmes (such as those related to Film Studies / Media Studies / Digital Media Studies)*. Please consider taking part in a new survey investigating *the teaching of extended reality and deceptive technologies in Higher Education screen media programmes*. You can access the survey and the participant information leaflet here: https://forms.office.com/e/mPcDEjYkyM Participation is invited from around the world and the survey should take *10-15 minutes* to complete. Please note that *you do not need to be teaching these technologies to take part*. This study is examining the extent to which screen media studies programmes in Higher Education are integrating content related to extended reality and deceptive technologies (such as virtual reality, augmented reality, ‘deepfakes’ and AI-generated media) as a result of the development and mainstreaming of these media technologies in contemporary culture. This survey will gather information on if, and how, these technologies are being taught at two points in time (summer 2023; summer 2026), with a view to understanding trends in their teaching. The survey aims to gain a better understanding of perceptions of these technologies among screen studies academics, including how they relate to traditional disciplinary approaches and any obstacles to them being taught. The survey is anonymous and no personal data will be processed for the purposes of the study. This study is being conducted as part of a broader project, funded by an Irish Research Council Laureate Award (2022-2026), entitled “From Cinematic Realism to Extended Reality: Reformulating Screen Studies at the Precipice of Hyper-reality” (REFORMSCREEN). Digital Methods Winter School 2024 ’Digital investigation with AI’ 8-12 January 2024 New Media & Digital Culture Media Studies University of Amsterdam Turfdraagsterpad 9 1012 XT Amsterdam the Netherlands Call for participation The Digital Methods Initiative (DMI), Amsterdam, is holding its annual Winter School on ’Digital investigation with AI’. The format is that of a (social media and web) data sprint, with tutorials as well as hands-on work for telling stories with data. There is also a programme of keynote speakers. It is intended for advanced Master's students, PhD candidates and motivated scholars who would like to work on (and complete) a digital methods project in an intensive workshop setting. Digital investigation with AI Online information in the public domain has been the source of study of societal trends and cultural condition for some time now. Geo-located search queries and social media engagement have been deployed as proxies for interests, concerns and sentiments. For a variety of reasons from data access to algorithmic effects, there has been an easing away from trace research and at the same time a growing interest in digital investigation. It focuses less on trends and more on 'fact-finding' or 'what actually happened'. In a sense it is an understandable shift, given the impact of the 'fake news' crisis that transpired on social media during the U.S. presidential election of 2016 and subsequent votes in Europe and beyond. Since then there have been grander narratives of the current informational situation online such as the rise of a 'post-truth' era. To settle things down a variety of digital investigative epistemologies are the focus of attention from fact-checking, debunking and source and media verification to algorithmic auditing. They seek to address a wide variety of disruptions to the new media landscape, such as media and attention manipulation to continual influence and information campaigning and coordinated behaviour, whether with harmful intention or more ironic and troll-like. The Winter School takes up a series of questions concerning the investigative turn from the impact of disinformation and content moderation to the new conditions of artificiality and detection with AI. At the Winter School there are the usual social media tool training tutorials for working on single and cross-platform analysis, but also continued attention to thinking through and proposing how to work critically with social media data, both from mainstream social media platforms as well as so-called alt tech. Apart from the keynotes and the training tutorials, there are also empirical and conceptual projects that participants work on. Our work addresses several tech policy areas including the use of AI and the policy implications for privacy, free expression and content moderation, security and surveillance, and election integrity, among others. The non-resident Fellows program is a great opportunity for researchers to use their work to inform important tech policy debates. This includes opportunities to publish their work, particularly for non-academic audiences; attending and potentially presenting at CDT events that include industry, government, civil society, and academic audiences; and potentially participating in CDT led events to directly engage policy-makers in the U.S., the EU, and elsewhere. Germaine --- The Digital Studies Institute (DSI) at the University of Michigan invites candidates for the DSI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with one course per year teaching load. This is a 12-month term-limited position beginning 8/26/2024, with the potential to be renewed for a second 12-month term. Applications are welcome from interdisciplinary scholars with demonstrated research expertise in Digital Studies and closely affiliated fields. This position is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with an interest in broadly defined critical digital studies, whose work may come from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to philosophy, art and design, language and literature, anthropology, critical ethnic studies, history, digital archives, law and social work, and other fields in the humanities and qualitative social sciences. The post-doctoral fellow will be affiliated primarily with the Digital Studies Institute and will work closely with an interdisciplinary range of faculty and students. This is a 100% effort position over the 12 months (8/26/2024-8/31/2025). It is expected there will be a combination of research (50%), teaching (16.67%), and programmatic development (33.33%) during the nine-month academic year, and research (67%) and programmatic development (33.33%) during the spring/summer term. Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to be in residence no later than August 26, 2024. As part of the programmatic development effort, the Fellow will be responsible for organizing or participating in two relevant topical events per year (e.g., roundtables, lectures, installations, brown-bags, pedagogy workshops, etc.) in collaboration with the Associate Director of DSI. The Fellow will also have a key role in helping organize the Digital IDEAS Summer Institute that will occur in June 2024. Teaching one course per year as a Lecturer is the expectation. Courses will be assigned at the discretion of the Associate Director, in consultation with the Fellow, depending upon the needs of the unit, qualifications of the Fellow, etc. Duties and responsibilities for the Lecturer position are, in addition to teaching one course per year, holding office hours, supervising Graduate Student Instructors (if applicable), and handling routine matters related to instruction. The total effort will be coordinated so as to total 100% over the 12 months. Full-time rate (FTR): $60,000/12 months (plus $5,000/year allocation for research expense reimbursement) The Lecturer position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
