The committee for the Association of Internet Researchers 2023 Nancy Baym Annual Book Award is delighted to announce this year’s winner. Many excellent books were submitted for consideration by the committee and the task of narrowing down the list to one clear winner was by no means an easy one. Indeed, as the committee felt that the two books that made it to the final stage of consideration were both eminently worthy of the award on their own terms, we decided it would also be appropriate to give an honorable mention. Accordingly, without any further ado, the winner of the 2023 Nancy Baym Annual Book Award is T*he Modem World: A Prehistory of Social Media* by Kevin Driscoll (Yale University Press) and the distinction of an honorable mention goes to *Redeem All: How Digital Life is Changing Evangelical Culture* by Corrina Laughlin (University of California Press). Driscoll’s *The Modem World* offers a compelling history of the sprawling BBS culture from which much internet culture emerged. Driscoll’s meticulous yet fast paced narrative of the rise and fall of the “modem world” of dial-up BBSs is as engaging in a readerly way as it is rigorous in terms of research and argument. Moreover, Driscoll’s analytical objective here is not just to recover a forgotten historical moment in the development of the internet and social media, but to present his account of the BBSs as a genealogy of the present that has important implications for imagining and enacting a future of the internet outside of the hegemonic rule of Big Tech. Accordingly, *The Modem World* captures the unwritten, yet crucial history of "alternative" social media as well as the historical dimension of the technology, both of which are badly needed for existing research on the internet and communication technologies more broadly. We note that this is the first time the award has been given to a monograph focused primarily on media history. Laughlin’s *Redeem All: How Digital Life is Changing Evangelical Culture* is a tour de force of research fieldwork on one of the most consequential developments in organized religion of the past decades, namely, the relationship between digital communication technologies and the quotidian practices of evangelical Christianity in the United States. Laughlin grounds her analysis in the ambivalent 20th century history of how American evangelicals have alternatively embraced and resisted the integration of new communication technologies into the missionary work of Christian religious practice. This historical grounding sets the stage of Laughlin’s ethnography of several different sites and spaces of contemporary evangelical culture that embody and perform what she terms the “digital habitus”, such as the suburban mega-churches and Silicon Valley start-ups that specialize in “faith-tech.” The book’s careful attention to the cultural politics of digital technologies within evangelical communities speaks to members of the AoIR community who do interpretive and qualitative work from sociological, anthropological, and cultural studies perspectives. New Resource: The Archival Internet Video Index

All, (Apologies for cross-posting!) I just wanted to share a new resource I've been working on that might be of interest to folks for research or teaching: The Archival Internet Video Index <https://apdame.github.io/vidindex/>. While the name is a bit of a misnomer, the AIVI indexes archival footage of early digital communications and information services in use, ranging from videotex to the early years of the web. I've focused on video in particular because it allows folks, especially students, to see these technologies in use. They're also great for illustrating public understandings of technology at the time as well as contemporaneous corporate rhetoric (the CompuServe/Mickey Mouse Club theme mashup might be my favorite find so far). Please feel free to reach out if you have questions, suggestions, or any updated information for an entry - in almost all cases, I've based what I've indexed on what the poster shared, so some of the dates for when these videos were produced are very fuzzy. Together, scholars and policymakers will discuss current practices, alternative designs and the ‘unknowns’ that are required for inclusive internet governance. With keynotes from Professor Johanna Weaver, Director of the Tech Policy Design Centre (Australian National University), and Dr Justine Humphry Senior Lecturer Digital Cultures (University of Sydney), alongside a range of panels composed of platform regulators, advocates and researchers, there will be two days of engaged policy discussion. There is also a selection of accepted papers with a strong focus on the Asia Pacific, First Nations and digital hostility, where the 2023 Policy & Internet Conference will showcase some of the premier research emerging from the region. Collecting Retweets

Hello Aoir, I am trying to collect retweets of a certain tweet. To my knowledge, the Twitter API does not allow for such a command. I read online that a workaround for this could be to enter the URL of the tweet as a query and use the Get URL command. This ended up giving me the quotes of the tweet and the RTs of the quotes but not not the RTs of the original tweet. Do you know if it is possible to collect the retweets of the original tweet? We invite writers, researchers, activists, artists and others together for a day of speculative thinking, talking, listening and experimentation on the topic of AI, race, and art. Hosted by the ADM+S with the VCA Centre of Visual Art (CoVA) and Art & Australia. For Stefano Harney and Fred Moten, study is a form of sociality. It is a meeting with, a brushing against, a bumping up of people, texts, ideas and things. It is the creation of a mutual and unpayable debt; a debt that is 'without count, without interest, without repayment.' As Moten states: study is what you do with other people. It’s talking and walking around > with other people, working, dancing, suffering, some irreducible > convergence of all three, held under the name of speculative practice. This event is an exercise in precisely this kind of practice. It invites writers, researchers, activists, artists and others together for a day of speculative thinking, talking, listening and experimentation on the topic of AI, race, and art. Terms like ‘AI’ are already associated with speculation—speculative fictions, speculative profits, speculative job losses, speculative risks and harms. Art also finds value in its connection to the speculative—speculative practice, speculative experiments, speculative funding, speculative futures. And critical work on race also productively turns to speculation when the empirical facts of inequity and injustice fail to create social change—speculative world-making and speculative methods to realise racial justice. This event combines these different strands of speculation, holding together disparate threads that may gesture to abstract and indeterminate futures but are all irreducibly historical, political, and situated. It focuses on AI, race and art because these are topics that need to be studied, that must be studied because they have implications on such things as subjectivity, politics, inequality, and aesthetics. It takes the form of a ‘ Study-in’, that is, a temporary school that will interrogate AI and race, developing new methods and approaches to study that draw from and feed into artistic methods and strategies. It begins from the proposition that the challenge of understanding race in the contemporary moment requires responses that are equal parts creative, critical, technical, and collective. Through the process of collective study, the event will also build what might be called a speculative curriculum. Here, we take the traces of what Harney and Moten describe as the 'empty shell of what used to be called education' to cobble together a resource that can exceed the time and place of the ‘Study-in’ as an event and can be used by ourselves and others as an occasion for future study. The event is motivated by questions such as: - How are bodies classified, recognised, and operationalised by Artifical Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) systems that are situated within colonial and imperial histories and contexts? - How are group-based differentials—such as race, gender, sexuality—shaped by data-driven technologies and AI systems? - How do these technologies move us beyond understanding race and gender as either purely biological or purely cultural? - And how might contemporary artistic practice help us to experiment, challenge, trouble, blow apart, and piece back together entanglements with technology, embodiment, and difference?
