This year, the EuroXR Conference will be colocated with Immersive Tech Week (formerly VRDays). It will be held with in-person attendance. Also, we will reinvigorate the applications track, the live on-site demos, and the posters. So participants will get an exciting and enriching experience. We seek original, high-quality contributions in all areas related to virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and 3D user interfaces. Authors of the top papers will get an opportunity to submit an extended version to the journals Computers & Graphics or Frontiers in Virtual Reality. Important Dates Deadline scientific papers: April 24, 2023 Notifications: June 12, 2023 Rebuttal deadline: June 19, 2023 Final notifications: July 3, 2023 Camera-ready: September 18, 2023 Conference: November 29, 2023 Each deadline is 23:59:59 AoE Types of contributions * Scientific papers (full, medium, or short) must describe novel research results and will be published in a Springer LNCS volume (Lecture Notes in Computer Science); * Applications extended abstracts are meant to describe practical use cases of XR technologies and will be published in an ISBN-registered proceedings, edited by VTT, Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. * Posters may present preliminary results or work-in-progress of research or application projects. They are accompanied by an extended abstract. * Demos may accompany any type of submission or may be submitted independently. They are accompanied by an extended abstract. In the scientific track, authors can choose between: - Full paper: 14-20 pages in the Springer format (about eight pages in traditional two-column format) with ~30 minutes of presentation at the conference. - Medium paper: 8-12 pages in Springer's format with ~20 minutes of presentation. - Short paper: 4-6 pages Springer format with ~10 minutes presentation. This type is meant for work-in-progress, position papers, and similar content. Submissions to the applications, posters, or demos track will consist of a 2-4 pages extended abstract. Upon acceptance, they will be published in the ISBN-registered proceedings, edited by VTT, as mentioned above. More information about these tracks will appear soon on the conference web page. Review process The review process in the scientific track will be performed in two stages. During the first stage, all submissions will be reviewed by at least three independent reviewers, and notifications will be sent to the authors. Authors will then have an opportunity to clarify issues identified by the reviewers. In the second stage, the reviewers will make a final recommendation on the paper. Submission Guidelines Submissions to the scientific track have to be uploaded to the submission management system of Springer (EquinOCS). More information on this and formatting instructions will appear soon on the conference web page. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book or conference proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterwards in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to EuroXR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the review process, from the submission deadline until final notifications of decisions are emailed to the authors. Submissions (including citations and optional videos) should not contain information that identifies the authors, their institutions, funding sources, or their places of work. Relevant previous work by the authors should be cited in the third person to preserve anonymity. Best regards, Sophie RESAW 2023: Exploring the Archived Web During a Highly Transformative Age <https://resaw2023.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/11> 5/6 June 2023 - Registration is now open What will remain in thirty years' time of the satirical videos published online during the imprisonment, the websites of the NGOs mobilised in Ukraine, the student groups on social networks or the academic journals? How can we study, preserve and transmit this native digital heritage at a time when technological, environmental and political changes are disrupting the production and dissemination of knowledge and shaking up certainties about ethics and democracy? The conference, which will bring together the main specialists in the study of web archiving from around fifteen different disciplines and 17 countries, on 5 and 6 of June at the MUCEM Lab, proposes to better understand the challenges posed by web archiving, both from a patrimonial point of view and from the point of view of its exploration by researchers who use it as material in the study of recent phenomena and the history of digital cultures. After the founding conference in Aarhus in 2015, London (2017), Amsterdam (2019), Luxembourg (2021), the RESAW 2023 conference will be held in Marseille for the first time in France. Organised by the TELEMME laboratory (MMSH, CNRS-AMU) and supported by the Mission Interdisplinarité(s) of the University of Aix-Marseille, the Marseille conference, entitled "Exploring the Archived Web during a Highly Tranformative Age", aims to examine the evolution of web archiving by highlighting the ways in which its exploration allows a better understanding of the profound transformations of contemporary societies. Dear Friends and Colleagues, I am just writing to share my latest article with you, now out on SpyTalk 'The Air Force Loves War Gamers Like Teixeira: The Discord leaks reveal a digital culture problem that more AI surveillance can’t solve <https://www.spytalk.co/p/the-air-force-loves-war-gamers-like>.’ It looks at the problems with AI insider threat firms like Palantir, as a response to leakers and why the military is recruiting people just like Teixeira… and encouraging them all to bond on Discord where extremists hang out. The piece gives a deep dive on the US military's effort to create an attractive war game culture to pull in young future cyber warriors. Please see the below call for abstracts for a special issue of Information, Communication & Society on "Platforms, Power and Friction" that Krishnan Vaseduvan and I are editing, and please circulate within your networks: Technology platform companies, from Amazon to Uber, require the constant flow of user data to maximize profits and fuel their growth. The dependency of their expanding business models on datafication (Mejias & Couldry, 2019) creates incentives for platform companies to remove any and all frictions that impede their accumulation of capital. For instance, scholarship draws attention to the ways platforms remove frictions by employing user-friendly design to obscure user data surrender and by opposing policies that may regulate or disrupt data flows. Frictions denote oppositional and counter-forces, which can slow down processes, reorient and produce movement (e.g., Tsing, 2005), or bring it to a halt. In the context of platform capitalism, frictions in domains as different as technical platform (re)design, gig labor organizing, and information infrastructure and digital market regulation, can manifest as democratic counterforces responding to, shaping, and contesting platform logics that intermediate and sometimes undermine democratic processes. As a theoretical construct, "frictions" draw attention to the outsized, but contestable power that platform companies wield over communication, civic action, labor and more broadly, democracy. We invite paper abstracts that theorize friction, including as a cultural, socio-technical, and political economic phenomenon, in the following contexts: * Platforms as intermediaries of and actors within key democratic processes * Global and local politics of data and platform governance * Specific domains of platform regulation, including speech, data, and competition * Labor power and politics in the gig economy * Platform feature design, including in areas like content moderation and data collection * Platformization of media industries, particularly with respect to local production * Infrastructural politics, including data centers, warehouses, and cloud infrastructures * Environmental and climate politics related to platform infrastructure and data flows We seek empirical studies examining friction from a broad range of theoretical frameworks including (but not limited to) critical political economy, digital studies, feminist studies, critical race studies, cultural studies, media studies, and platform studies. We encourage submissions from a diverse set of methodological approaches including qualitative, ethnographic, mixed methods, as well as quantitative approaches. Studies about friction from underrepresented regions and/or about social groups underrepresented in research are especially encouraged. Format and Process: The special issue will include eight full-length original articles (7,000 words). For the initial submission we request that interested authors submit a 300-word abstract and short 100-word bios for each author. Submissions should specify the theoretical/methodological approach of the study and also how it resonates with the special issue on friction. Selected authors will be invited to submit a full manuscript, which will undergo an initial review by the guest editors. Papers that meet the special-issue submissions standards will then undergo a full blind-review process by Information, Communication & Society. Selected papers are not guaranteed publication in the special issue. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Krishnan Vasudevan is an assistant professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Krishnan's critical scholarship on design, labor practices and journalism has been published in New Media & Society, Journalism Studies and other reputable publications. His 2022 documentary feature, One Driver, One Mic about taxi driver activism, was an official selection at the 2023 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and will be distributed through Collective Eye Films.
