PhD position in equity in computer science education

The computer science department at the University of Bergen is hiring a PhD student to study equity in computer science education, and I am guessing some people on this list may be or know good applicants. The job comes out of the computer science department’s discovery that women got worse grades on the intro to programming course all first year students in the natural sciences have to take. They looked at the exam, and saw that women score just as well on almost all tasks – but did significantly worse on a question asking them to make a program analysing soccer results, even though the mechanics of what was being asked was the same as other questions asking them to use weather data or other less socially gendered data. This PhD is part of a project the computer science department is putting togther to address this problem. The PhD candidate’s project would involve identifying how to contribute to inclusion in computer science education at the university, e.g. looking at * Analysis of the impact of assessment design with regard to gender differences in: test performance, experiences of study, and identification with the discipline in CS education. * How does difference (e.g. age, ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, class or socioeconomic status, and/or family experience with higher education) affect experiences and outcomes of participating in specific teaching and learning activities or assessments. * Gender differences in the teaching assistants’ practices and interactions within instructional teams. * Accessibility and universal design for learning in computer science. * Investigation and/or comparative analysis of inclusive teaching practices in computer science higher education in Norway / Scandinavia. * Investigation of other equity issues in instruction, such as material-structural access to machines / lab settings, instructional culture, or hidden curriculum in computer science education. You don’t necessarily need an masters degree in computer science to apply, although you would need to have completed a masters degree by August 1, 2023 in either informatics, computer science, a related natural science field or a field related to STEM education. You need sufficient experience with a programming language to contribute to teaching the first-year programming course is a requirement, but they also need someone who has experience with social science/humanities research. Norwegian PhD candidates are employees with a proper salary and are members of the Norwegian welfare system with all its benefits. This will be a four-year contract. Please share widely! Social media seems to have awakened the urge to share images of our bodies. These shared visual representations contribute to the creation of individual and collective identities. They are tools of meaning-making and belonging in a highly mediatised world. Their visibility can be part of advertising campaigns, everyday interactions, intimate practices, activist engagement and many other affective practices. These are situated in digital cultures of affect and their inherent normativity is governed not only by social norms but also by the particular possibilities and algorithmic rules of platforms. Contested online environments have also become terrain for contemporary social justice movements and activists who both respond to and use online visual representations for their actions. These hybrid activist practices rely on embodied representations and combine online and offline activities. While online spaces enable important visibility, this visibility also carries risks and raises questions about who prefers not to be visible and what practices of resistance can be adopted. Digital participation is inextricably linked to embodied characteristics (e.g., gender, ethnicity, social class, age, (dis)ability or others). These intersecting identities can shape digital experiences enabling them to both liberate and oppress individuals and communities. Keynote speakers - Daniela Jaramillo-Dent | University of Zurich Daniela Jaramillo-Dent is an internet scholar with research and teaching expertise on migration, digital media, and social justice. Her research has explored algorithmic (in)visibility, minority representation and inequality in digital platforms. She has contributed to and held leadership roles in research projects at the local, national and European levels. She has international teaching experience in fields related to digital inequality, research methods and media literacy and has led teaching innovation projects and training workshops for innovative teaching in Higher Education. - Marloes Geboers | University of Amsterdam Marloes Geboers’ work revolves around the visuality of warfare as produced within and through platforms and their fast-evolving participatory modalities. Her dissertation focused on platform affective affordances and their role in constructing regimes of visibility relating to the Syrian war. Alongside these topics, she authored work on platform-afforded digital violence aimed at journalists. She blends digital methods and automated image analyses in order to study performative expressions that replicate, imitate or subvert propaganda narratives in more or less tactical ways. These user practices shape and are shaped by platform vernaculars that have a profound impact on the way we see and experience war within contemporary media ecologies. Marloes has a background in political science (MA) and journalism (BA), and she has teaching experience in digital methods and the ethics of AI. Katrin Tiinberg | Tallinn University Katrin Tiidenberg works at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School of Tallinn University as a Professor of Participatory Culture. Her research focuses on the hows and whys of people's social media practices, with a particular emphasis on visuality, sex and political participation. The overarching questions she tends to ask are about identity, community, norms and power. She is currently wrapping up a research project on the platformization of sexuality (Rethinking Sexuality) and the role of the internet in young people’s political participation (DigiGen) and has just started a project on visual digital trust (TRAVIS). Call for Papers The conference will include different formats for presentation on topics related to contested visibilities, everyday politics and online imaginaries of the body. We welcome individual submissions for oral presentations, which will be arranged in thematic sessions by the organising team. We also welcome submissions in alternative and creative formats, proposals may include video, audio, images, text, hyperlinks and multimedia that illustrate your reflections in the proposal. We are interested in abstracts that address the complexity of online representations of bodies and/or related visual practices (e.g., producing, perceiving, curating, circulating) through case studies, theoretical, empirical or methodological approaches. We strongly encourage submissions that take an intersectional approach and address embodiment in relation to social factors such as gender, sexuality, age, class, race/ethnicity, disability, and nationality. We are open to contributions from scholars at all career stages (early-career scholars are especially invited to participate), artists, activists, and media producers. Call for papers This IFIP WG 13.8 workshop on HCI for Digital Democracy and Citizen Participation will take place preceding INTERACT2023, in York, UK, on 28 or 29 August 2023 (TBC). Online attendance will be allowed. https://ifipwg138.wordpress.com/hci-democracy/ Motivation This workshop will explore and discuss how Human Computer Interaction (HCI) as a field of knowledge and practice can contribute to develop platforms for digital democracy and participation. These issues are mainly seen at two levels: (1) the optimal design of the digital environment of citizen participation platforms, and (2) explore how HCI can contribute to the development of new trends in Political Science, such as e-democracy. The practice of designing digital platforms for citizen participation and democracy could benefit greatly from a multidisciplinary sociotechnical approach that incorporates into design reflection on issues of democratic theory and practice, legal and political science. Researchers have sought to articulate design patterns and evaluation tools for these platforms with general perspectives on the democraticity of the processes they sustain. But citizen participation systems give rise to specific problems related to usability and user experience. The user is both the institution, company, formal, and informal collective, as well as the subjects that interact with these platforms. This workshop proposes a multidisciplinary exploration and discussion about design of digital platforms for citizen participation and democracy, including issues such as the necessary digital and technological resources, typology of tools that allow communication (to share knowledge), create community (to find and integrate individuals into a collective) and cooperation between individuals (to achieve common community goals), legality of the decisions taken in these platforms or subjective trust in their general function. The target audience for this workshop includes researchers and practitioners from different disciplines working on topics related to Digital Democracy and Citizen Participation in HCI. Early-stage researchers and PhD students are also encouraged to submit work-in-progress papers. Topics of Interest We look for position papers trying to answer one or more of the following questions: How can different approaches towards sociotechnical and interaction design pro-mote or undermine democratic participation? What are the best design patterns and requirements that lead to effective platforms for Digital Democracy and Participation? How can digital democracy platforms be evaluated? What are the best tools and methods to support communication, community formation and deliberation in democratic processes? Design thinking and innovation: how the design process should be led by democratic requirements and not by technology affordances? How to identify forms of democracy and associated practices through the presenta-tion of relevant case studies. How to identify and assess the nature and type of citizen participation in the pro-cess of design of these platforms. Workshop Objectives In this workshop, we understand the above issues as sociotechnical in nature and aim to trace the cultural and political dynamics that drive the design of this type of platforms. More concretely, we solicit position papers that help us fulfil the following objectives: To help develop a framework of HCI to be applied in e-democracy and participatory processes. Collect examples and experiences of digital democracy platforms. Collecting examples and experiences that show that the field of HCI can be beneficial in the design and development of digital platforms for citizen decision processes Formulate a research agenda for future work on digital democracy research on HCI. Expected Outcomes The workshop will produce a research agenda for studying the optimum development of digital platforms for e-democracy processes through a HCI lens, and how best to understand and analyze them. The aim with this research agenda is to stimulate further research interest and provide direction for critical research on HCI apply to design digital participatory platforms. In addition, extended versions of the workshop papers will be published by Springer in the LNCS series as a volume collecting papers from the INTERACT 2023 workshops and in a special issue in the Interacting with Computers journal. She current research democratically owned enterprises, their use of technology, and the way they govern the business. As member of Forum on IT and Cooperative Governance (FITCG) she researched democratic entrepreneurship for the Danish Parliament that resulted in suggestions for new legislation to further cooperatives in Denmark. Juan José Gómez Gutiérrez is Lecturer in Aesthetics and Art Theory at the University of Sevilla (Spain). His research focuses on art and politics, including critical urban theory, cultural policies, the high and the low in art and hegemony. Images about foreign nations and peoples, cities of diversified cultures, enterprises and products imported from elsewhere in the world, have already penetrated in our daily life. As W. J. Thomas. Mitchell claimed, images are abstract and reside in a people’s consciousness. It is media that materialize images into pictures, and transmit them in specific global communication contexts. In the past decades, online media have significantly changed the nature of images. The digitization of image communication is changing the foundation for most global collaborations or conflicts, in global politics, global businesses or global cultural exchanges. Online media, news sites, messaging apps have become common ways people learn about the world and other racial groups. However, the news and postings on these online media may exacerbate conflicts through emotional, impulsive and sensational postings and comments. They may also help in reducing international conflicts by finding common interests and success of international collaborations and learn about how other nations deal with the similar problems such as climate change, environmental protection, public health issues (such as COVID-19). Governments, cities, news organizations, NGOs, businesses and individuals can all play a role in promoting peace or exacerbating conflicts via digital sharing of institutional and personal experience in global communication. Within this context, the conference intends to draw insights from multiple disciplines and explore the dynamic relations between image studies and global communication in the digital era, with the 2023 theme on Online Media and Image Studies Under Conflicts. We welcome individual articles submissions and panel proposals related to (but not limited to) the following topics. 1. Image of global conflicts as portrayed in online media and their impacts 2. The faculty themed session paper award recipients will receive a cash award (1st place RMB3000, second place RMB1800, and third place RMB1200) and a travel grant to the conference up to RMB6,000. Faculty-student collaboration will count as faculty paper no matter the faculty is the lead author or not. The post holder will also collaborate with a postdoctoral researcher at Universidad de los Andes on a scoping study, and contribute to the development of digital health literacy and empowerment training resources and policy recommendations. *DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES* • To conduct participatory action research on the experience of young adults (ages 18-30) in Colombia, Ghana, Kenya and Vietnam with the digital transformation of health information and services. • To provide technical support and guidance to national researchers in all four countries, with the guidance of the PI and the consortium Steering Committee. • Together with the PI, coordinate the development of study protocols and tools, and participate in national-level meetings with Community Advisory Teams to identify national-level research priorities and qualitative methods for the study. • Provide training to national researchers on ethics and methods of qualitative research, and provide technical support through virtual means, in-country visits and study exchanges; host weekly virtual research clinics. • Coordinate reviews of laws and policies by national researchers in the study countries, producing reports and policy recommendations. • Together with the PI, coordinate online qualitative data analysis (using Dedoose). • Collaborate with a postdoctoral researcher at Universidad de los Andes to conduct a scoping review for publication. • Contribute to development of an online repository of digital literacy education courses and tools, development of course materials, and policy recommendations. • Keep in regular contact with the PIs on the progress of the research; attend regular project meetings, and alert the PIs to any problems that may arise in the conduct of the research. • Maintain and provide the PI and Steering Committee with frequent updates on materials, development, and data collected and analysed during the duration of the project, and regularly update materials on the project’s on-line sources. • In collaboration with the PI, draft and revise research papers resulting in journal submissions and/or conference presentations. • Any other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of the post and as deemed appropriate by the PI. ------------------------------ Person Specification The Person Specification focuses on the knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required to undertake the role effectively. Project Summary: In September 2022, UN leaders affirmed that “Human rights should be at the heart of tech governance”. High-level policy discussions over the next few years will represent a turning point in digital governance. Young people and civil society in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) must shape that discussion, or risk missing the opportunity to establish rights-based digital governance for the future. The Digital Health and Rights Project Consortium unites scholars and practitioners at University of Warwick, Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+), KELIN, Privacy International, Restless Development, STOPAIDS, and Universidad de los Andes. The project was established in January 2020 at the Geneva Graduate Institute, and has conducted research, policy engagement and digital empowerment education in five countries, with the aim of strengthening the rights-based environment for the rapid scale-up of digital health in low- and middle-income countries. In June 2023, the consortium will move to and be hosted by CIM at University of Warwick. From June 2023-May 2026, with support from Fondation Botnar, the project will conduct qualitative research in Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, and Vietnam using a transnational participatory action research approach. This will produce a body of social science and comparative legal evidence, with case studies analysed by local Community Advisory Teams in each country and a global Digital Rights Community of Practice. We will develop digital literacy training and resources, and an open-access Digital Literacy Hub. The project draws on the experience and leadership of people living with HIV and affected communities (LGBTQ+ communities, sex workers, people who use drugs, migrants and persons in displacement) -- with stigma and discrimination, criminalization, community mobilization and transnational advocacy -- as a site from which to explore the future of human rights in the digital age more broadly. Long-term, our project will first help to make participatory approaches to research and governance more widespread in digital governance, increasing the meaningful participation of young people in their diversity. Our participatory approach will be evaluated independently, creating new democratic, community-engaged models for global digital governance. Second, as a result of our research, policy engagement and dissemination activities, national governments, global health agencies and human rights mechanisms will take action to strengthen and enforce rights protections in young peoples’ use of data and technology, addressing issues and approaches identified in our project. Third, our project will strengthen meaningful and sustainable participation of young people in their diversity from LMICs in research, digital innovation and governance. Dear all, I don't know if this if of interest to everyone on this list, but I believe it is to quite a few. NLnet and NGI Zero/NGI Assure are organising a series of webinars on *Open Software Supply Chain management*. As the dependency of society on technology continues to increase in every possible direction, it is of the utmost importance to understand the dynamic life cycle of the free and open source building blocks that form the basis of pretty much all technology we use today - and how these can be kept safe and available. Not only do we need to improve our understanding of how and where software is developed, maintained, built and deprecated at macro scale - but we also need to create mechanisms to ensure that building blocks are kept up to date, that different versions don't collide, FOSS packages from public repositories have not "bit-rotted" or even worse: have been tampered with by malicious actors as part of a "supply chain attack". There has been an increasing attention to the fact that with software "eating the world", a healthy and robust software ecosystem should be a key societal (and thus political) priority. But at the same time, we should do so with full understanding of the highly specific nature of "digital commons" - as the controversy surrounding the upcoming Cyber Resilience Act clearly proves. In this series of webinars by leading experts such as Armijn Hemel (Tjaldur), Shane Coughlan (OpenChain), Carlo Piana (OSI), Alberto Pianon (FSFE) and Philippe Ombredanne (AboutCode) we look at software supply chains from different angles. What do modern electronics supply chains look like, how is provenance handled - and how *should* it be handled? Call for Proposals for the Identity and Social Media Symposium: Bridging the Gaps between Computational Methods and Critical/Cultural Perspectives 28-29 September 2023 Salt Lake City, UT Submissions close 5 May 2023 The Edna Anderson-Taylor Communication Institute at the University of Utah invites proposals from advanced doctoral students who are studying the intersections of identity and social media. In this symposium, 12-15 doctoral students from communication and related disciplines will have the opportunity to present their work in progress to one another and to a panel of distinguished faculty mentors from around the country. Each student will present their research on a panel with 3-4 other students. Each panel will be overseen by two faculty mentors who research issues related to identity and social media, one with critical/cultural expertise and one with computational social science expertise. Faculty mentors will provide detailed feedback and lead panel discussions on their student panelists' work. Mentors will include Prof. Deen Freelon (UNC Chapel Hill), Prof. Jo Lukito (UT Austin), Prof. Rachel Griffin (University of Utah), Prof. Shannon McGregor (UNC Chapel Hill), and Prof. Avery Holton (University of Utah). There are growing bodies of excellent research on problems related to identity and social media from scholars taking both critical/cultural and computation social science approaches. Unfortunately, these scholars are often not in conversation with one another. Our goal with the symposium is to help bridge the gap among different approaches and traditions of communication research by creating a setting where those trained in different approaches can think together about this year's symposium theme. Specifically, we hope to provide an opportunity for emerging scholars to present and get feedback on their work from established scholars who approach our theme from both critical/cultural and computational perspectives. Short proposals of 500 words are invited for work-in-progress papers of roughly 3,000-4,000 words. Accepted participants will turn in their completed draft ahead of the symposium for mentors and other participants to read in advance. From an estimated 500,000 monthly active users (MAUs) it reached an apparent peak of 2.5 million MAUs in December 2022 before settling back to a reported 1.4 million as of late January 2023. The rise of Mastodon cannot be separated from the tragi-spectacle of Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, and this raises new questions about the relationship between social media platforms and their alternatives. How should we understand the significance of Mastodon, both as an alternative to Twitter and in its own right? We know Mastodon has long appealed to users invested in the infrastructural politics of open-source and federated architectures. But less is known about Mastodon’s forms of sociality and how its infrastructural characteristics shape this sociality. Can Mastodon sociality scale without the viral dynamics of algorithmic feeds? Should we even evaluate Mastodon based on its potential for growth on the scale of the commercial platforms? Are its new users simply on a Twitter sabbatical? How has the influx of users altered the dynamics of Mastodon? Mastodon users are spared from the advertising-derived attention economy, but ads are relatively low down on the scale of undesirable interactions on social media. How is Mastodon handling racism, trolling, and content moderation? Is there a specificity to the violence and abuse experienced on Mastodon as compared to its commercial counterparts? Mastodon introduces a novel level of social media governance, the instance, whose structures of authority can take various forms, from mini-chiefdoms to more deliberative collectives. What do we know about how different Mastodon instances handle governance and the exercise of their ‘instance-power’? Conversely, which tactics have malicious users developed to circumvent moderation or blocking? If platform politics emerges through the unique affordance of a platform, what might we expect from the federated architecture of Mastodon? Finally, Mastodon’s architecture presents new challenges and opportunities for digital research. What kinds of research do the existing tools (such as the R package “rtoot”) enable and what other tools and software might we want to develop? Could Mastodon be used to explore more conscientious ways of doing API-style research, and platform-community research in general? This event seeks to take the pulse of current Mastodon research. It will involve a one-day symposium featuring research presentations and a plenary address by alternative social media researcher, *Robert Gehl*. Do consider sending an abstract if this Call resonates with your work. *Call For Abstracts* *Critical Political Economy of AI: Southern Experiences* Recent uptake of Generative AI tools has brought to the fore conversations on the usefulness and downsides of applications like ChatGPT. Reports on the deployment of cheap labour at firms housed in Asia, Africa and Latin America to clean and feed datasets for the training of these AI systems are steadily streaming in (Williams et al, 2022). Such global patterns of the extraction of transnational labour and distribution of resources are not new. They have been studied in the context of the outsourcing of technology and business processes (Chandrasekhar, 2005), content moderation services (Gillespie et al, 2020) and ghost work (Gray and Suri, 2019). Further, research in recent years has showcased how machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are prone to accentuating inequities *already existing* in societies, through black-box training of datasets laden with biases that reflect such societal imbalances (Buolamwini and Gebru, 2018). All these inequities are premised on extant disparities along patriarchal, racialised, eugenicised, casteist, regional, economic and ableist lines that then get amplified by selective design and implementation of these technologies. This Call For Abstracts seeks to engage with perspectives that interrogate and provide scholarly vocabulary and lenses to understand these developments in the field of machine learning and AI technologies, as they implicate our political, economic, social and cultural lives. In doing so, this edited collection aims to present a Critical Political Economy approach to the study of ML and AI technologies, highlighting inequities and emphasising the radical reimagination of alternatives (Wigger, 2022). Over the past few years, there have been efforts in the fields of Sociology and Communication to develop and underscore the theoretical framework of a Southern Standpoint (Go, 2016; Raghunath, forthcoming) to understand situated experiences of historical and current marginalities as a means to underscore and draw attention to the multifarious forms of colonisation, both *between *and *within *societies. This Call focuses on *Southern experiences* along aforementioned lines, as perpetuated or mitigated by these technologies. By drawing on this conceptualisation of a Southern Standpoint as a possible way of exploring situated knowledges (Haraway, 1988) and experiences (Frie, 2011) of these technologies, this Call seeks to ask the following questions: How can we draw up a critical political economy of ML and AI technologies while these developments are currently underway across the globe? How do these technologies perpetuate or mitigate existing inequities in intra-regional, national and societal contexts, and who benefits? How can we implicate publicness as a desired ideal that can hold proponents of these technologies to account? Finally, how does the cooption of efforts in mitigating inequities take place, and how can we work collectively to redress them?
