DEADLINE EXTENSION for the Identity and Social Media Symposium: Bridging the Gaps between Computational Methods and Critical/Cultural Perspectives 28-29 September 2023 Salt Lake City, UT We are extending the deadline for submissions by one week. If you have not had a chance to apply yet, you can now do so until 12 May 2023 The Edna Anderson-Taylor Communication Institute at the University of Utah invites proposals from advanced doctoral students who are studying the intersections of identity and social media. In this symposium, 12-15 doctoral students from communication and related disciplines will have the opportunity to present their work in progress to one another and to a panel of faculty mentors from around the country. Each student will participate in a panel of 4-5 other students. Each panel will be overseen by two faculty mentors who research issues related to identity and social media, one with critical/cultural expertise and one with computational social science expertise. Faculty mentors will provide detailed feedback and lead panel discussions on their student panelists' work. There are growing bodies of excellent research on problems related to identity and social media from scholars taking both critical/cultural and computation social science approaches. Unfortunately, these scholars are often not in conversation with one another. Our goal with the symposium is to help bridge the gap among different approaches and traditions of communication research by creating a setting where those trained in different approaches can think together about this year's symposium theme. Specifically, we hope to provide an opportunity for emerging scholars to present and get feedback on their work from established scholars who approach our theme from both critical/cultural and computational perspectives. Short proposals of 500 words are invited for work-in-progress papers of roughly 3,000-4,000 words. Accepted participants will turn in their completed draft ahead of the symposium for mentors and other participants to read in advance. This is to facilitate productive discussion and feedback on each participant's paper. *****Contested Visibilities: Everyday politics and online imaginaries of the body* deadline approaching*** *CALL FOR PAPERS* Contested Visibilities: Everyday politics and online imaginaries of the body 6-8 September 2023, Lusófona University, Lisbon, Portugal The conference will include different formats for presentation on topics related to contested visibilities, everyday politics and online imaginaries of the body. We welcome individual submissions for oral presentations, which will be arranged in thematic sessions by the organising team. We also welcome submissions in alternative and creative formats, proposals may include video, audio, images, text, hyperlinks and multimedia that illustrate your reflections in the proposal. We are interested in abstracts that address the complexity of online representations of bodies and/or related visual practices (e.g., producing, perceiving, curating, circulating) through case studies, theoretical, empirical or methodological approaches. We strongly encourage submissions that take an intersectional approach and address embodiment in relation to social factors such as gender, sexuality, age, class, race/ethnicity, disability, and nationality. We are open to contributions from scholars at all career stages (early-career scholars are especially invited to participate), artists, activists, and media producers. Her research has explored algorithmic (in)visibility, minority representation and inequality in digital platforms. She has contributed to and held leadership roles in research projects at the local, national and European levels. She has international teaching experience in fields related to digital inequality, research methods and media literacy and has led teaching innovation projects and training workshops for innovative teaching in Higher Education. Marloes Geboers | University of Amsterdam Marloes Geboers’ work revolves around the visuality of warfare as produced within and through platforms and their fast-evolving participatory modalities. Her dissertation focused on platform affective affordances and their role in constructing regimes of visibility relating to the Syrian war. Alongside these topics, she authored work on platform-afforded digital violence aimed at journalists. She blends digital methods and automated image analyses in order to study performative expressions that replicate, imitate or subvert propaganda narratives in more or less tactical ways. These user practices shape and are shaped by platform vernaculars that have a profound impact on the way we see and experience war within contemporary media ecologies. Marloes has a background in political science (MA) and journalism (BA), and she has teaching experience in digital methods and the ethics of AI. Katrin Tiinberg | Tallinn University Katrin Tiidenberg works at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School of Tallinn University as a Professor of Participatory Culture. Her research focuses on the hows and whys of people's social media practices, with a particular emphasis on visuality, sex and political participation. The overarching questions she tends to ask are about identity, community, norms and power. Dear Colleagues, Please join the Games Institute <https://uwaterloo.ca/games-institute/> at the University of Waterloo for a Lecture “From Custer's Revenge to Red Dead Redemption: Changing the Language of Indigenous Representation in Video Games” with Dr. Ashley Bird on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 — 1:00 PM TO 2:00 PM EDT/UTC-4. This is a free and hybrid event! *Registration is required. <https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/changing-the-language-of-indigenous-representat…>* Dr. Bird will emphasize the two types of language taking place in video games: mechanical, coded language, and visual, representational language. She presents the importance of teaching the history of Indigenous representation in games and will break down various examples from Custer’s Revenge to the Mortal Kombat and Red Dead Redemption series to demonstrate these types of gamic language. Building upon these examples, she centers on the problematic ways players have historically translated the messages they are being presented within the digital medium of the video game. She illustrates how these translations result in harmful narratives about Indigenous avatars becoming cemented within the overarching discourse and design of games. Finally, she will look at new Indigenous works and how inclusive and decolonial game design and practices like ROM hacking can push back against these established narratives and the ways in which players read them, and instead create sovereign digital spaces for Indigenous peoples. About the Speaker: Dr Bird is a Native American game designer and PhD in Native American Studies. She is Western Abenaki and originally hails from the Champlain Valley of Vermont. Her work theorizes digital sovereignty, drawing on Native American studies, media studies, and game studies to address representations of Native American characters in video games. The work analyzes specific colonial methodologies being replicated within game spaces in order to then replace these with decolonial methods of game design being undertaken by herself and fellow Native game designers with a focus on what she terms “synthetic Indigenous identity,” oriented around promoting Indigenous futures. Her work has been featured in the InDigital Space at the ImagineNATIVE Film & Media Festival in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Dear All (sorry for cross-posting), We would like to inform you that the deadline for participating in the *Surveillance Capitalism Conference* has been extended until the *12th May 2023*. We remind you that the conference is part of the project “V-Data - The value of digital data: enhancing citizens’ awareness and voice about surveillance capitalism”, funded by Fondazione Cariplo, and it will take place 7-8 September 2023 at the University of Pavia. We appreciate your help to contribute & forward this CFPs to your friends. ======================================================== IEEE GLOBECOM 2023 CONFERENCE TRAVEL GRANTS Conference Travel Grants (CTG) is a newly established IEEE ComSoc program which provides partial financial support for participation in IEEE ComSoc conferences. APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY To be eligible for a CTG, an applicant must be: 1. A a ComSoc member; 2. A GLOBECOM 2023 participant; and 3. Unable to obtain sufficient substantial funding from own institution or other sources, and forced to cover most of or all the associated expenses with own funds Priority will be given to: • Authors of GLOBECOM 2023 Conference Papers • Presenters of accepted talks at GLOBECOM 2023 • Those residing in a country with a low Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita HOW TO APPLY FOR CTG? An application for a Conference Travel Grant should be submitted through EDAS<https://edas.info/listAllTravelgrants.php>. Select the “GLOBECOM 2023 Conference Travel Grant” to submit the application. The application must include the following materials in a single PDF file: 1. A statement that includes the reason for the trip and an estimate of the travel costs, attests that the applicant has not obtained any other funding for the trip, and explains the applicant’s financial need for the grant 2. Short CV (1-page) 3. Country of residence and country of birth. 4. ComSoc member number. 5. Accepted paper number (if any). Non-compliant requests will not be considered. SELECTION PROCESS A committee of volunteers will evaluate CTG applications. Applicants will be ranked in this order of decreasing priority: 1. GDP per capita of the country of residence/work. 2. Distance of the country of residence/work from the conference venue 3. Paper/talk review evaluation The CTG will be paid as reibursement after the conference and only if the goal of the request is achieved A recipient of a CTG may not receive any other ComSoc grants for the same conference. Depending on the number of eligible candidates, each conference travel grant at IEEE GLOBECOM 2023 will have a minimum value of US$700 and a maximum value of US$1,400.
