The SMLC is an interdisciplinary lab that utilizes cutting edge technology to listen, measure, and engage in online conversations across various digital and social media platforms. Its mission is to empower students and faculty from across the university to leverage the power of analytics and computational social science to better understand how information spreads, resonates, and performs. The ideal candidate for this position will work alongside the SMLC Director and staff to support research endeavors across the university through data collection, grant writing, and collaborative research projects with faculty from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. The candidate will engage in project management, data analysis, and manuscript preparation for publication in scientific journals. The candidate will have an outstanding opportunity to collaborate with accomplished scholars across the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences, which encompasses seven academic units, including Communication; Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management; Political Science; Psychology; Public Health Sciences; Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice; and a School of Nursing. The college is also home to twelve centers and institutes. *Qualifications and Necessary Skills:* - MA (required) or PhD (preferred) in communication, information science, computer science, computational social science, or related field. - Experience in harvesting and managing large databases, particularly (but not exclusively) from major social media platforms. - Analysis experience using quantitative methods and research techniques. - Experience analyzing data using computational linguistic techniques (NLP; sentiment analysis, etc.), network science (social and/or semantic), machine learning, etc. - Ability to independently identify external funding opportunities and write grantsDemonstrated capacity for interdisciplinary scholarship. Recent years have nevertheless seen a significant increase in cybercrime, including illegal commerce being conducted on various platforms. In the public eye, much of it is associated with the non-indexed Dark Web, but research tells us that it is likewise present on many clear web sites and being conducted via numerous social media and instant messaging services. Rarely a day goes by without cybercrime being reported in the media. Examples include online trading in narcotics and other illicit goods and services, the hijacking of individual accounts and organizational systems, extortion, exit scams, fake investments in cryptocurrencies and even blatant information manipulation for financial gain. This minitrack aim is to give insights and develop a theoretical and practical understanding of issues related to cybercrime without excluding any methodological approaches. We welcome conceptual, theoretical, empirical and methodological papers that enrich our understanding of illegal online practices. Webinar - Humane Conversation – A Call for (Global) South to North Methodological Approaches in Critical AI Studies

Dear AoIR members, We are organizing a webinar with Dr. Andrea Medrado from the University of Westminster about methodological approaches in critical AI studies. Please see the call below: *#19 Humane Conversation – A Call for (Global) South to North Methodological Approaches in Critical AI Studies with Andrea Medrado and Mathias Felipe de Lima Santos* In this conversation, Dr Andrea Medrado and Mathias Felipe de Lima Santos interrogate ideas of artificial intelligence (AI) for social good, drawing inspiration from Participatory Action Research (PAR) and the work of Latin American thinkers such as Freire and Fals Borda. Medrado presents data from the project and paper “AI for Social Good?” co-authored with Dr Pieter Verdegem. For the project, participatory workshops were conducted in London with a group of students, activists and tech workers. In the paper, Medrado and Verdegem analyse two transversal themes – AI for Social Good? And Decolonial Perspectives of AI – and delve into three concepts – autonomy, empathy and dialogue. They propose a South-North flow and utilise PAR approaches that stem from Latin America. This is an attempt to challenge the ways in which the North’s centrality is taken for granted when it comes to epistemologies, experiences, and pieces of knowledge related to AI. They argue that PAR can not only empower marginalised communities in the Global South; we can also learn more from its application in the Global North, in contexts where people deal with different struggles. Yet, there are constraints in applying PAR. These are related to how scholarship is organised in the Global North, often with the aim to generate top-down impact, which stands in opposition to the open agenda and bottom-up approach of PAR. Still, much can be learned from this research journey. Inspired by Fals Borda’s (2003) “sentipensante” notion, they embrace an “epistle-method-philosophical” approach in which making, thinking and feelings are all combined. Rather than following the AI hype, we argue that more is to be learned from everyday AI stories, which we must tell, listen to and share in pluriversal ways. Dr Andrea Medrado is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster <https://camri.ac.uk/blog/staff/andrea-medrado/> in the UK and a member of CAMRI (The Communication and Media Research Institute). She also worked as an Associate Professor at the Federal Fluminense University in Brazil. Pervasive computing has not only been a vivid research area, but also found its way into many commercial and consumer systems and applications due to tremendous advances in a broad spectrum of technologies and topics such as wireless networking, mobile, and distributed computing, sensor and actuator systems, ambient intelligence, and smart mobile and embedded devices. Due to the pervasiveness of such systems, users become central in the development and realization of innovative pervasive systems. Advances in all these fields have led to innovative platforms, protocols, systems, and applications but still, a lot can be done to improve their quality, sustainability, and acceptance In 2024, PerCom will be held in Biarritz, France. Currently, PerCom 2024 is planned as an in-person event. The PerCom 2024 Organizing Committee invites proposals for one-day or half-day workshops, to be held prior to or immediately after the main conference. The purpose of the workshops is to stimulate discussions on state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and also controversial topics. Workshops should be organized to promote lively interaction and plans to promote interaction and discussion must be clearly addressed in the written workshop proposals. The organizers of accepted workshops are required to publicize the workshop by disseminating the call for papers, soliciting submissions, conducting the reviewing process, and deciding upon the final workshop program. At least one organizer must be physically present at the workshop. We are aware that the possibility to visit Atlanta depends on the future pandemic situation and of course only applies under the assumption that PerCom can take place as a hybrid event (at least partially in presence). Therefore, organizers should plan on a best-effort basis, possibly including organizers from different locations, for instance, to limit the impact of travel restrictions. Workshop proposals are solicited in all areas and topics pertaining to research and applications in pervasive computing and communications. Workshops addressing new emerging research directions in pervasive computing and communication are especially welcome. Further, workshops with novel formats, e.g., focused on a specific topic in a tutorial-style fashion, are strongly encouraged. Workshop papers will be included and indexed in the IEEE digital library (Xplore). *Content Moderation and Its Discontents* *An International Conference, St. Mary’s University (London, UK), 23 June 2023 * *Call for Papers* In recent years, content moderation on social media has become a contested topic. As forms of online extremism, harassment and hate speech have increased on major platforms, community guidelines and AI-based detection and moderation policies have been introduced to tighten regulation, yet such plans often fall short or are actively circumvented, as Elon Musk’s efforts at undoing what he regards as excessive restriction of “free speech” on Twitter demonstrate for instance. Some spaces on the internet are also notorious for their lax or inexistent moderation policies, such as Reddit or 4chan. In times of culture wars, many have also claimed an erosion of free speech in a climate of “cancel culture” in which it has allegedly become impossible to share particular viewpoints or ideas. Equally many have disputed the very existence of cancel culture and have pointed out that many instances of deplatforming or cancellation are mere shifts in discourses whereby voices who have been marginalised are now claiming their rightful place on the discursive stage. This conference takes the complex relationship between the facilitation and moderation of content and particularly of content that can broadly be labelled “problematic” as a starting point. Opinions among politicians, tech experts, academics and others differ in relation to what types of content should be flagged or removed by platforms or if too restrictive regulation constitutes censorship. A blanket ban on “problematic” online content is unrealistic and perhaps counterproductive. While illegal content or posts that constitute hate speech such as death threats should surely be removed, the question of content moderation becomes more complex when it comes to “problematic” content such as images of self-harm, “pro-Ana” communities or the open discussion of mental health problems like suicidality or depression. This interdisciplinary conference invites papers that deal with the complexity of content moderation and associated topics from different perspectives. We invite critical papers that can address but are not limited to: - The dynamics and functions of content moderation (flagging, up and downvoting, removing, etc.) - Content moderators, labour and trauma - Practices of in/visibility: shadow banning, soft blocking and other forms of disengagement - Self and collective regulation (e.g. in fora) - Content moderation, regulation and the law - Culture wars and cancel culture - Polarisation, filter bubbles and echo chambers - Problematic content and mental health communities - Shitstorms and online shaming - Psychodynamics of social media and platforms This conference is organised by Jacob Johanssen (St. Mary’s University), Daniela Nadj (St. Mary’s University) and Susanne Benzel (Sigmund Freud Institute, University of Frankfurt) as part of the research project *Mapping Online Mental Illness Communities: History, Representation and Questions of Regulation*. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. It will be a hybrid event. In-person attendance is encouraged and virtual participation is possible.
