CFP: ICA Preconference on the Legacies of Elihu Katz Preconference date & location: 25 May 2023, as part of the International Communication ‘Association annual conference at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel Submission deadline: 20 December 2022. (there is no registration fee for this preconference) Elihu Katz (1926–2021) was a peerless scholar, colleague, mentor, administrator, and friend to many in the field of communication. His passing has left the field with an absence that calls out for remembrance and for scholarly consideration. This one-day, all-plenary preconference will create a space for scholarly exchange on Katz’s life, works, and themes—a forum, in other words, for active, critical engagement with his legacy for the field. The preconference invites presenters to explore, critique, and extend Katz’s contributions to communication scholarship. Some will situate Katz’s legacies in pertinent historical contexts; others will use his work to imagine media futures; still others will consider Katz’s many roles (teacher, institution-builder, broadcast pioneer, mentor). Some lines of inquiry presenters may wish to explore include, but are not limited to, the following topics: * considerations of journalism and the public that draw upon Katz’s configurations of Gabriel Tarde’s ideas * explorations of the promise and limitations of the idea of the media ritual * elaborations upon the idea of the two-step flow of media effects * diffusion processes in varied media and networks * the evolution and contemporary significance of the concept of media events * perspectives on Katz’s ideas that come from disparate subfields in communication, including but not limited to: interpersonal communication, organizational communication, and intercultural communication * philosophical interrogations of Katz’s ideas and research empirical studies that draw explicitly on Katz’s ideas, for instance cross-cultural readings of American television inspired by the Export of Meaning* (his co-authored book with Tamar-Liebes) * Shifts of emphasis in media studies between content providers and audiences * Katz’s place in the canon of media studies * new ideas concerning the Katzian intersection of mass communication and interpersonal communication * transpositions of Katz’s ideas into new arenas, like human-machine communication and virtual reality * historical scholarship addressing: * Katz’s involvement in broadcasting and mass media, including his role as a creator of Israeli Television * the export of Katz’s ideas to communication and media studies departments around the world * the impact of Katz’s ideas on academic fields and areas of practice outside of communication Abstracts of 400 words (maximum), in Spanish or English, should be submitted no later than 20 December 2022. Cyberattacks have changed in nature and intensity: their growing number; the variety of their targets (public institutions, critical infrastructures and utilities, large and strategic companies); in some cases the terrorist and/or quasi-military objectives of their proven or alleged authors, sponsors or beneficiaries; the expansion of their surface, making profit of digitalization progresses in all sectors; together with the escalation of geopolitical tensions and conflicts; are all features pushing cybersecurity issues to the top of the agendas of both public and private actors. The increasing relevance of cybersecurity is reshaping state powers, public administration, private businesses, civil society and academic research as well. New agencies, procedures, and structures have been institutionalised both by national governments and international organisations to deal with cybersecurity policy problems. New power relations are being established, both inside and beyond the state. Governments, both at the national and local levels, are still struggling to find their own governance structures and set of instruments in the range of different cybersecurity models (e.g. cyber defence, cyber offence, cyber resilience, etc.) and their possible implementations. The provision of public goods and services is undergoing a profound re-design and re-engineering process led by cybersecurity concerns, that implies new models of citizenship and new modes of public administration. Private companies are facing new challenges, often dealing with a shortage of skills and competences of the workforce, while new companies and new business models are emerging around the transnational market of cybersecurity. At the global level, states, through their representatives at the United Nations and its different bodies, confirmed that international law applies online as it does offline. They also identified the need to better understand how international law could be applied in cyberspace, with issues of attribution, liability, sovereignty, rule of law and due diligence being raised. Given the multistakeholder feature of global internet governance, private companies have also jumped in with their own proposals, promoting their roles as possible norms entrepreneurs. Technical management and standardisation organisations have a prominent role to play as well when dealing with global cybersecurity. As a consequence, new research agendas and scientific perspectives on cybersecurity are consolidating, shaping a novel multidisciplinary field of inquiry that is not only exceeding the original field of internet governance, but seems also phagocytizing it: internet governance as an issue of cybersecurity governance. After having addressed “Global Internet Governance as a Diplomacy Issue” at its first edition in 2017, “Overcoming Inequalities in Internet Governance” in 2018, “Europe as a Global Player in Internet Governance” in 2019, “Online Information Governance” in 2020, and “Global Internet Governance and International Human Rights” in 2022, the European Multidisciplinary Conference on Global Internet Governance Actors, Regulations, Transactions and Strategies turns its attention this year to the governance of cybersecurity, in view of further investigating and inquiring the political, economic and epistemic transformations connected to the rise of cybersecurity and how they impact on democracy and human rights. Dear Colleagues, This is a brief reminder of our Call for Papers for a Special Issue on "Methodological Developments in Visual Politics & Protest", to be published in the Journal of Digital Social Research (https://www.jdsr.io/) Abstracts of 400-500 words are due 15th December 2022. Full details can be found below and on the dedicated call website: https://www.jdsr.io/call-for-papers *BACKGROUND TO THIS SPECIAL ISSUE* War streaming on Instagram, propaganda in press photography, refugee activism on TikTok - recent European crises have shown images and videos as essential tools of communication in politics and protest, a trend mirrored in the increasing use of visual data in research methodologies. Visual data may capture practices of visual, performative, or non-verbal communication, text-image relationships, the development of visual formats, notions of aesthetics, as well as underlying meanings of symbols and codes. Extant research has since captured different elements of visual politics and protest, including social history (e.g. protest photography), political commentary or affiliation (e.g. through memes or profile picture overlays), social cues in political communication (e.g. in the form of GIFs, filters, or emoji), visual activism practices (e.g. culture-jamming, sousveillance video coverage, graphic flesh-witnessing, or video activism), and visual forms of information documentation and distribution (e.g. infographics). Even so, new creative practices have at times challenged research practices, for example with regards to image authenticity and appropriation in mis- and disinformation campaigns (e.g. deepfakes), the role of platform affordances in new visual formats and spaces (e.g. short videos on TikTok), (mis)interpretation and differing levels of visual literacy in communications, trust in image data as factual evidence, and opaqueness in the production of visual materials. These critical debates have been particularly contentious in the arena of politics and protest, where visuals have been seen to shape political opinion and discourse, electoral campaigns, war coverage, and Covid-19 data visualisations. In response to these trends, we are looking for methodologically oriented papers on visual politics and/or protest. This may include methodological discussions, new methods or approaches, worked examples or case studies, research on emerging visual digital phenomena, or submissions linking theory to methodology surrounding digital culture, data, or methods. Foci may be based around methods of data collection, analysis, visualisation, theorisation, or other methodological areas. On a broad level this may include (but is not limited to): ➢ New methodological approaches in visual or multimodal data collection or analysis ➢ Platform- or format-specific mitigations in conducting visual research on politics and protest ➢ New methodological approaches (including software tools if applicable) for capturing visuality or visual cultures in politics and protest ➢ Discussions of the relevance of technological formats, tools, and infrastructures in visual research ➢ Innovations in embedding visuals or visuality with textual, audio, or sensory materials ➢ Advancements in analysing specific political visual digital practices and/or phenomena ➢ Methodological strategies for interpreting and/or quantifying visual data ➢ Emerging approaches to visualising image or video data ➢ Suggestions or developments in the ethical treatment of visuality in politics, protest, or activism ➢ Epistemological discussions of the role of the visual in politics, protest, or social movements ➢ Advances in collecting, interpreting, and conceptualising social media data ➢ Linking theory to methodology in visual research We are open to different article structures. However, articles should have clear contributions in the arena of methodological research by outlining or describing new methodological approaches, innovations, strategies, or frameworks. Data driven technologies have rendered borders ubiquitous, multi-layered and mundane: the outside border control has become increasingly mobile, now travelling with and tracking migrated bodies after border crossings (Leurs & Ponzanesi, 2023; Aradau & Tazzioli 2020; Dijstelbloem, 2021; Metcalfe & Dencik, 2019; Chouliaraki & Georgiou, 2022; Ahouga, 2022). Datafication is often framed as a phenomenon that concerns everyone: in a highly networked digital world, datafication cannot be escaped. However, datafication does not treat everyone in the same way. Automated social sorting, critical data studies highlighted, is often based on categorizations and assumptions that echo existing social biases and historical power structures, as well as pervasive and accumulative surveillance of the already marginalized (Gangadharan & Niklas, 2019; Ajana, 2019; Colman, 2016; Nikunen & Valtonen, 2023). At the same time, data driven technologies also provide systems of help, aid and witnessing, as well as new forms of resistance and activism to support people who are seeking asylum or who are on the move (Gillespie et al., 2018, Glouftsios & Scheel, 2020; Latonero & Kift, 2018). The goal of this one-day conference is to bring together scholars to introduce their research on digital technologies and datafication in migration and discuss the ambivalent and contradictory role of datafication and digital technologies for migrants and refugees, as well as the unsettling consequences of datafication in bordering and policymaking. We invite papers that explore these issues from different global contexts and disciplines, from media and communication, migration studies, critical data studies, cultural studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, science and technology studies, law, social anthropology, criminology, data science and geography. The event fosters cross-disciplinary dialogues of qualitative research, ethnography, digital methods and critical data studies. Doing Global Media Studies: Theories, Practices, Reflections CARGC Fellows’ symposium March 22 - 23, 2023 – Call for Proposals To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, the 2023 biannual fellows’ symposium will reflect on evolving concepts and methodologies in the field of global communication and media studies. We are witnessing ongoing global crises, from widespread displacements and climate disasters, to pandemics and the rising threat of fascism. In light of these circumstances, we invite emerging scholars, artists, and activists to explore what a global approach to media and communication can do today. What is at stake in studying global communication and media at this historical moment? We seek to decenter Western epistemologies by foregrounding the local, the situated, and the relational interconnectedness of cultures, institutions, and infrastructures through media. In an effort to think beyond the national frameworks typically employed by area studies, we foreground transregional methods and frameworks of study that situate the global within the local and vice versa. Bringing together questions of the global and the local allows us as scholars to be reflective and reflexive, to situate our own scholarship within the world, rather than from an imagined, 'objective' outside. We invite scholarly and creative projects, including research papers, creative writing, video essays or documentaries, sound or audio projects, artistic installations, and performances. We welcome submissions from early career scholars, as well as artists and activists whose work engages these issues. Submissions from scholars, artists, and activists based in the Global South are particularly encouraged. Topics may include: * Activist interventions, inclusive practices, and in/equity in global communication and media * Epistemologies of the planetary, the global, and the local and their interrelations * Mediating (neo)colonialism, environmental extractivism, and competing sovereignties * The politics of translation, comparative frameworks, and regional approaches * Media’s im/mobilities and south-to-south flows of cultural exchange * Global perspectives on ( the failures of) communicating mis/disinformation, nonsense, and noise * Global political economy of media industries, platforms, and popular culture The keynote address will be given by Professor Purnima Mankekar. Conference Format & Timeline The CARGC Fellows symposium will take place at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and online on March 22 & 23, 2023. The symposium is planned as a hybrid event, with in-person participation highly encouraged. It will feature a keynote address by Dr. Purnima Mankekar and roundtable sessions (in which participants will give 5-8 minute flash presentations of their work). Senior scholars will act as discussion facilitators for the roundtable sessions, responding to and providing feedback on participants’ work. The purpose of these roundtables is to foster discussion between participants before opening up to a wider Q&A from the audience. Accepted participants will also be invited to a professional development workshop on teaching global media studies and communication. * Keynote address and in-person roundtable sessions will be made accessible to global audiences through Zoom. The 2023 Canadian Game Studies Association (CGSA/ACÉJ) annual conference will be held June 6 to June 9 in a virtual format combining pre-recorded paper presentations with synchronous Q&A discussion sessions.
