Dear Future Colleagues and Friends, Short version (to save your time): - You can find the online survey on: https://uwa.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3fOcMR7NW34vxIy - The survey is open from 31 October 2022 to 13 November 2022 - Thank you very much for considering, and helping me with my PhD work The longer version: My name is Yangjinbo Zhang. My PhD project is about associating digital art and data visualisation to create entertaining data storytelling content. In an effort to improve the project, we are looking for people who are interested in trying out our data storytelling charts and comics, and taking a quick survey after viewing them. This survey will take around 10~25 minutes I am currently pursuing my PhD at the University of Western Australia (UWA) under the supervision of Prof Mark Reynolds. I would very kindly like to invite you to help me and support my work in answering a quick online user-survey. The survey is part of the user testing that I am currently conducting. If you choose to participate, you will be invited to do several short memory tests and a survey. Your participation will take approximately 10~25 mins. As I sift through the long tail of this AoIR thread of the last few days - I was literally in a cabin in the woods when the Musk deal went through, so just catching up on emails and kitchen sinks - I would have to second the Discord suggestion. I'm a relative newbie to that platform - using it for AI art, NFT and ML research - but have been impressed with the flexibility of the tools and how servers can be tailored to support particular needs of each community. I also like how I can be as actively present or distantly curious. Communication tools are solid with an emphasis on latency and stability. It was built by and for gamers <https://www.protocol.com/discord> but it's so much more than that dna might suggest. I know a few academics who use it to compliment their LMS sites, some notes on its pedagogical benefits here <https://www.profweb.ca/en/publications/digital-tools/discord-an-efficient-c…>. Obviously it doesn't take much to improve on a Universtity LMS platform. *sigh* Nonetheless, I can imagine AoIR users really exploiting the possibilities there. New CDT report - “An Unrepresentative Democracy: How Disinformation and Online Abuse Hinder Women of Color Political Candidates in the U.S.”

Hi all, CDT released a new report “An Unrepresentative Democracy: How Disinformation and Online Abuse Hinder Women of Color Political Candidates in the U.S. <https://cdt.org/insights/an-unrepresentative-democracy-how-disinformation-a…>” which examines the problem of mis- and disinformation and abuse targeted at women of color politicians who ran in the November 2020 elections. The study analyzes over 100,000 posts on Twitter from the 2020 election that were targeted at or about candidates, and also relies on interviews with women of color candidates and campaign staffers from 14 campaigns. The research builds on a long history of community advocates, and candidates themselves, raising concerns about this type of harm and adds more evidence about the targeting and impacts on women of color political candidates in the U.S. One of the major findings of the report is that women of color candidates are twice as likely as other candidates to be targeted with or be the subject of mis- and disinformation online; and four times as likely as white candidates and twice as likely as men of color candidates to be targeted with violent abuse. New CDT Report on Disinformation and Online Abuse Targeting US Women of Color Candidate

Hi all, Today, CDT published new research documenting the high rates of violent threats online faced by women of color running for office in the U.S. Our report shows that political candidates who are women of color are twice as likely as other candidates to be the subject of mis- or disinformation, and more than four times as likely as white candidates to be targeted with violent abuse. The research builds on a long history of community advocates, and candidates themselves, raising concerns about this type of harm. Recently the Pentagon launched a review of its social media propaganda, following a series of Big Tech take-downs of misleading US PSYOP campaigns. I extensively analyzed the internal resistance and ethical concerns raised within the Pentagon that preceded the introduction of the emergent internet tactics in my past research and academic article <https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0896920517750741>. It's beyond time for a wider debate.
